It's a mostly shady trail, with a few moments of sunshine to be found. The trail becomes very narrow and twisty south of m59, so be careful in this section.
Sad to say it's been over a year, and the best section of this trail is still closed. It was a great connection to the Macomb Orchard Trail. Any info on a fix would be greatly appreciated. Would like to help out in any way possible.
Detour route has heavy traffic.
First 2 miles from the north to the south are very bad! Water puddles and torn up asphalt. My wife had an accident when she was forced into the thicket. Do not recommend riding bike here. Never going back.!!
While traveling to the area, visited this trail and was pleasantly surprised. Paved trail runs 9.5 miles in length from St. Charles to Stroebel Road in Saginaw. This trail is basically flat, well shaded and passes through wooded areas and working farms. The trail surface is in good condition. Water level in the Bad River very low. We parked at Lumberjack Park on water street, under the water tower in St. Charles and biked to the Stroebel Road trailhead and back. The trail does have several road crossings, some of them had more cross traffic than others but still a great trail ride! Newly installed and beautifully painted fence separating the parking lot from the active rail line at the Stroebel Road trailhead. Along the trail there are several benches, trash cans and even picnic areas. Trail services in St. Charles include eateries. We also biked the connecting Thomas Trail for a few additional miles.
The map and all the text on the website indicate that the trail in Lapeer county is 20 miles long. I am told that all 20 miles is mowed regularly and evidently all the bridges and tunnels are in place. It all may be suitable for horseback riding or hiking or cross country skiing, but only the 4.5 miles south of Dryden has any sort of trail that cyclists would opt to ride. That segment is prepared gravel and well worn single track, intermixed. The web site needs to expressly note that is is the only segment cyclists would enjoy. The Oakland county segment is wonderful.
Biked the 8.4 mile loop today with great weather. Not too many others on the path with a mixture of walkers, bikers, and in-line skaters (bless their hearts). Today is Friday, September 12th. As such, while the beaches were open, no food facilities, rental facilities or other manned attractions were open. Having said that, the trail was magnificently maintained and I enjoyed the 1+ hour experience
This used to be my favorite trail to ride. I still ride it often as I live nearby. HOWEVER...this trail is in need of maintenance. I mostly ride Richmond to Romeo. Trees need trimming - they are overhanging from the sides and from overhead (have to duck under). There are a couple holes in the trail - the ground under the paved trail has given way and the black top has fallen in the whole - broken leg for a runner who doesn't see the hole. There are a couple spots where the embankment is giving way and the edges of the trail are collapsing. Either bridges have risen or trail has sunk - there are some rough transitions. Several of the split rail fences that are bridge approaches have collapsed.
Started at Bandamere Park through Ann Arbor to Ypsilanti. The signage through Ann Arbor was terrible especially at major cross roads. More signage and larger than 4x8” (sometimes so faded you couldn’t read them) placards at intersections would make using the trail more enjoyable.
Today’s ride from Pewamo to Ionia was quite nice. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of trail in the shade, riding next to the Maple and Grand Rivers. The trail (both asphalt sections and crushed/compacted stone) were in good condition and pretty much straight and flat. In Ionia we enjoyed an ice cream cone at Cooks
The trail is lovely from Sylvan to Bagley and then you turn left on South Boulevard and it is all torn up and dangerous. You have to cross Woodward and drivers are very rude. OpDyke is not much better, but then you get on nice pavement at the Apple orchard Trail. The gravel is very course on that trail and I turned around at crooks. Auntie really needs to improve its sidewalk if they want in tourist to come through.
