Pere Marquette Rail Trail

Solar System Sculptures

August, 2026 by kriekkoff_tl

I rode the entire trail from Clare to Midland. The Hall of Fame Rail Trail lived up to its billing! The 12-foot-wide asphalt trail was well maintained and there was excellent signage. Although there was little to no shade from the midday sun, there were fully functional rest stops in the city of Coleman and the village of Sanford with restrooms and water fountains. The solar system sculptures starting with the sun in the city of Coleman and ending with Pluto in the community of North Bradley was an unexpected treat. The village of Sanford had an interesting historic village. The Tridge, a three-legged wooden footbridge, in the city of Midland was the ultimate climax to the end of the trail. The city of Midland had a cute downtown and there were lots of restaurants.

Chippewa Trail

More trail for your buck!

August, 2026 by kriekkoff_tl

The Chippewa trail was just as nice if not nicer than its Hall of Fame big brother. The 12 foot-wide meandering trail was well maintained with many interpretive signs next to a bench for resting. I saw many deer and fawns on my dawn ride which took me through a nice mix of forests, meadows, marsh and grasslands. The trail even starts and ends at the Tridge! The only negative was that it was too short.

Very nice trail

Definitely worth doing. There are frequent road crossings and it is very straight. More trail diversity would be better. Cute towns along the way.

I'd only use it to jump onto Genesee Valley Trail myself, otherwise I'd recommend skipping it.

All Sun Here

There's almost no shade to be found on this trail, so break out a long sleeved shirt or sunscreen.

You'll be surrounded by crop fields the entire time on this trail, so if you want to sightsee, look elsewhere.

Otherwise, this is a pretty good trail.

m47 will be your companion along this trail, so bring headphones.

I feel like this could have been a nice trail if it had been in a wooded area but the traffic ruins it for me.

Iffy

It's bumpy and cracked all throughout, so it might be a little rough on your bum if you do the whole trail.

It's a nice and open trail that links with a much longer trail at the end, though it's a little bumpy and sidewalk riding may be required.

Vestaburg to Alma-13 miles-Smooth Pavement

September, 2025 by vicki1960

We parked at the former train station, looks to be kept up and refurbished, located on 2nd Street in Vestaburg. Biked to Alma for lunch and back. 13 miles one way. This part of the trail is in very good condition, well maintained and even a section recently sealcoated. Downhill glide from Vestaburg to Alma for steady gradual uphill climb back to Vestaburg. Trail passes through a few small old railroad towns. We also found this section to be very heavily wooded offering plenty of shade. Passes by open farmlands as well. We would definitely put this on our ride again list!

Bay County Riverwalk/Bangor Rail Trail

Bay City State Park Section-Bay City Loop Tr.

September, 2025 by vicki1960

We parked at the Frank N. Anderson Nature Center parking lot on State Park Road. Took the rail trail into Bay City State Park. There are plenty of places to bike ride in Bay City State Park, which offers beautiful views of Saginaw Bay. Within the park are several nature trails that are paved and bicycles are permitted. We stopped at the visitor center for trails maps. The best trail within the State Park was the Tobico Marsh trails which was on an old rail bed. There was a spur off of it which was gravel but took us up to an observation tower. Plenty of parking areas and nature trails. A lot of pretty scenery.
