Great Allegheny Passage

A much improved trail - Ohiopyle to Confluence

August, 2020 by FrankJ

In my last review (very recent, and in fact, just yesterday) of this section of the Great Allegheny Passage, I complained about the very poor condition of the trail. Well, I rode this section again today just to see if it was repaired yet. Lo and behold, it was! New limestone was laid down on the entire 10+ mile length between Ohiopyle and Confluence. This made for a smooth, fantastic ride. I hope that the trail will be continually maintained like this. Congratulations and a BIG Thank You to the crews who did this work!! What a great surprise this was. The trail was fun again.

Rough Trail - Ohiopyle to Confluence

August, 2020 by FrankJ

Generally a great trail. However, the section between Ohiopyle and Confluence is in dire need of repair. I don't know when the last time crushed limestone has been added to this trail, but it must have been 15 years ago. The last few years, this section has been very rough on tires. There is actually no limestone in several places, and you are riding on exposed base stone, which is very rough. Rough enough to destroy a tire if you are moving fast. On my last trip this past spring, the trail condition was still horrible. I'm hoping that the trail has been repaired by now (August 2020).

Cheat Lake Trail

Went here on 8-2-2020 and regretted it immediately when we saw that in order to access the trail we had to traverse a very steep and rocky hill or take the 50ish stairs. If there were alternative parking areas there was no information saying as much. Since we had driven so far, we risked the hill (by steep, I mean unreasonable to walk especially with a bike) only to find that there was a padlocked gate blocking the trail after approx one mile. Beware of high volumes of pedestrian traffic. Doubt I would ever return.

We accessed the trail from the park/beach/pick nick area. We parked in the designated area, unloaded the bikes, took the trail toward the dam, then peddled back toward Greystone and found the gate padlocked with a sign “NOTICE SOUTH TRAIL CLOSED” Not sure why the trail is closed nor am I sure why there couldn’t be a sign at the parking area about the closure. Regardless, it was very disappointing

Barnum Rail-Trail

Not typical rail trail - more suitable for mountain bikes

July, 2020 by jkhiser

Rode on 29 Jul 2020. This is a rugged trail, really need mountain bike with off road tires, etc. And it is hard to reach. Watch Google - it will try to take you through closed road through the COE land at the reservoir, leading to a 20 mile back track. There is no easy way to get here. If you can handle the rough conditions, the river views are fantastic. But a long drive for a 4 mile out and back ride.

I go on this trial when I get the chance too. My dog loves it. It is a beautiful trail and there are friendly people. Very well kept up with and it’s beautiful when the sun shines.

Awesome ride

We rode the bulgar to Walker Mills section today so now we have rides the entire trail. Nice surface except one section that was really rough in spots. Was downhill all the way to Walker Mills so ride back was not as fast. Will definitely be riding this trail again.

Great for cyclists of all ages and levels. Pittsburgh to Ohiopyle was a great trip; lots of shade on a 90+ degree day made the heat not be much of an issue. Riders are very respectful with covid. Bring lots of water- water stations are hit/miss at present. A+ trail!

Great ride today

July, 2020 by vlc9802

We rode this trail from Toulon to Princeville today. It was great! The path was very good. It is mostly shaded. Excellent. We stopped in Wyoming on our way back for lunch. Ate at 111 Coffee Shop. Don’t be fooled, this is NOT just a coffee shop. The lunch was delicious. And it is decorated all with bikes! Perfect for us bikers. And check out the bathroom. Cute!!! Can’t wait to do more of the route from Princeville going south.

We enjoyed riding from Ohiopyle to Connellsville. Even on a 90+ degree day , we were fine in the shade.
