This is a nice and short little section of the Pittsburgh to Erie Trail System. Great for evening walks
One of the nicest paved trailed around! Clean, maintained, courteous trail users. No bathrooms, but, jeez, pee at Sheetz!
The PA portion is a decent greenway. The instant you cross into NY you see evidence of vandalism, 4-wheelers nearly run you over (they don’t slow down), multiple rotting deer carcasses dumped on the trail, piles of garbage, horrendous ruts & puddles from ATVs and my personal favorite: 2 young Amish having sex in the middle of the path. it was not the experience I was expecting at all! Do better New York!
Great trail no matter the season. June 2025 a warm and sunny day. This trail offered 85% shade! Just a few short areas that isn't fully shaded. Trail follows Oil Creek, asphalt paved trail surface in very good condition except for a few bumps. We parked in Petroleum Centre and biked North to Titusville and back. Had lunch in Titusville took some side streets to a restaurant. There's several eateries in Titusville as well as trail services...dollar store, convenience store. We frequent this one in the summer due to the shade!
We parked in Franklin and headed South for about 10 miles to Brandon. the first 8.5 miles or so are full sun so keep this in mind on a hot sunny day. Then there is a few miles of shade to Brandon. Beautiful day for a ride for once we had some sun and not overcast and/or rain. Always enjoy our cycling on this trail.
The trail is very poorly marked! The area around Behrend campus and also Lampe Campground near the channel are very nice. The rest is simply urban riding. But it’s better than nothing if you live in the Erie area.
We started in Emlenton and headed North. Emlenton to Kennerdell. 12ish miles one way. Rockland tunnel and Emlenton tunnel, need lights...they are dark and long tunnels. Allegheny River water level high due to recent heavy rains. Trail surface is paved. Always an enjoyable ride on this section of the trail.
Parked at Kline Road, though no designated parking area, there was enough space off to the side of the road to park one vehicle without blocking the gate and lane. Headed West approx 2 miles and turned around. Trail is flat, sits high up almost as high as the next ridge over, and looking way down is Sandy Creek. Surface was dirt, cinder and gravel. Very wide in some areas, almost like a 2 lane back road. Doable on a gravel bike or mountain bike and possibly a hybrid with wider tires such as 700x45's.
Early Spring Ride: Foxburg to Parker. This paved section is 2.5 miles in length runs between the two towns, along the Allegheny River and crosses the Clarion River. Trees are still bare. Spotted an Eagles nest across the river near the Clarion River Bridge (look towards Foxburg). On a sidenote, the Foxburg to Emlenton section is still dirt/mud and not developed as of yet.
