Nice trail through marshland and farmland

May, 2020 by carolraz2000

We started the trail from the south end, which was tricky to find if you don’t know what you are looking for. There is no official parking for the trail. We parked by the cement factory. There was a very small, dirt path, maybe 60 yards, that we walked our bikes until we found an asphalt path. It looked fairly new, but the first almost half mile had weeds growing through the it. After that, it was well maintained. We saw and heard lots of birds. The path took us up to Bay City where we rode the River Walk then came back to the path. There was some parking by Hotchkiss Road, about halfway up the trail. Although there were some people on the trail, bicycling and in line skating, the trail was not too crowded.

Great Trail

Love riding this trail! You can ride as little or as far as you want. Well maintained, scenic route!

Huron Valley Trail

West Leg

May, 2020 by lelandab

My first review only covered the north and south portions of the route. Yesterday, I rode the western portion. The turnoff follows the expressway through New Hudson. It isn't very scenic, wedged between the car dealerships and the expressway. After that, though, it takes a turn and heads uphill for a while. The climb is relatively steep as you head up what was once a garbage dump. There is still some smell of sewer gas. The route has intermittent areas with rough asphalt/gravel. Once you reach the top, it is a steady descent, eventually running along another road and back to the expressway where you can hook up with Kensignton.

West Bloomfield Trail

Scenic and varied

May, 2020 by lelandab

This one is really nice. Not fit for road bikes, but good for all others. Within a short distance, one can see hills and woods, wetlands and open fields. There are a couple of areas with offshoots that are solely for mountain bikes. The end at Haggerty had no opportunity to go further west last time I rode it.

Clinton River Trail

Many scenic stretches

May, 2020 by lelandab

This is a popular trail, starting from downtown Auburn Hills or closer to Adams at the Mammoth site beside the road. It is almost entirely gravel, so not a great choice for road bikes. However, other bikes can easily traverse the path. There are often pedestrians and all kinds of other forms of exercise going on, but getting through isn't hard. The road crossings are moderately busy, but do-able. The total change in height is about 600ft.

Macomb Orchard Trail

Well maintained but not much scenery

May, 2020 by lelandab

If you are looking for a ride that is flat, straight and in good condition, this is the one for you. The street crossings are a little hairy in places, but this is otherwise a great route for road bikes. It can get crowded with a mix of pedestrians and bicycles, but there is generally room to get through. My only qualm with it is that it runs straight as an arrow through most parts and is bordered mostly by open fields or small businesses. I've only gone as far as 29 Mile (entering from Yates Cider Mill), but I can't imagine it gets much more scenic as you go north.

Huron Valley Trail

Straight and flat but bumpy

May, 2020 by lelandab

Rode from Lyon Oaks golf course lot. The beginning was bumpy and crossed several businesses' driveways with gravel. A left turn about 1/2 a mile north of Pontiac Trail put us onto a stretch with some nice trees lining the route. That was in the best shape of the ride. As we got past I-96, we kept to the left, taking the south part of the trail. The stretch from about 12 Mile to 10 Mile was the bumpiest with many seams in the asphalt. It was fine on a flat bar fitness bike, but my kid was jolted around a lot on his road bike. There are some pretty stretches that are forested and a couple that are wetlands. The stretch going towards Island Lake looks to run right along the expressway.

Great views!

Wonderful ride today. I went a little off course so not only did I do the route, I managed to get in 26 miles. Lots of scenery, different kinds of turns and twists. Great overall. Nice paved sidewalks for most of the time.

Rode this trail from South Lyon to (almost) Wixom round trip today. It is very bumping and in need of resurfacing.
