Oil Creek State Park Trail

July ride 2024

July, 2024 by twhiston11

Easy river view trail on all paved surface. Shaded most of the way by the trees. Beautiful views of the windy river and one bridge and railroad trestle and plenty of benches and rest stops in the 10 mile ride. Would have given this trail a 5 as most others did but the paved surface in many areas had roots of trees creating ridges and thus is quite bumpy in some areas. Especially in miles 6 to 7. Around mile marker 8 a bear with a couple cubs can be seen if you time it right according to the ranger. If I could give this a 4.5 I would. If the trail was resurfaced in the bumpy areas it would be a 5 with ease.

A beautiful State Park bike trail

June, 2024 by vicki1960

Presque Isle State Park is a beautiful park located in Erie PA at Lake Erie. Paved trail loop within the park. Some of the trail is share the road which isn't all that bad. The vehicle speed limit is 25mph and the park rangers and PSP do patrol it. At the Coast Guard station there is a lighthouse on the pier, which they are rehabbing the pier this summer. There is another lighthouse in the park, Presque Isle Light, which is open for visiting and climbing and staffed by volunteers, seasonal. The park also offers hiking trails and kayaking, as well as boating, beaches, fishing and picnic grounds. Many restrooms and parking lots along the trail. So much to see and do here and of course enjoy the paved bike path. We visited on a weekday due to sometimes the park is crowded on weekends. As always, PA state parks are free to enter.

McClintock Trail

This is a road and a trail

June, 2024 by

Much of this route is road, not trail. The only trail is the first mile at the south end (Oil City) and within Oil Creek State Park. Otherwise it's road - and some of that is dirt with medium-size gravel.
A friend and I planned to ride the trail in June 2024 using 35mm tires. We turned around when we hit the gravel (tires were not wide enough to ride safely). We drove to the state park, and rode its smooth asphalt trail with partial shade. The trail is slightly uphill to Titusville, and runs along Oil Creek. The trail is just wide enough to ride 2 abreast.
Trail signage is spotty south of the park, particularly where the trail becomes paved road then dirt road with gravel.

Pymatuning State Park Spillway Trail

June 2024 Ride

June, 2024 by vicki1960

Parked at the Spillway, at mile marker 1. Stopped and fed the ducks and fish. At the Spillway, there is a snack shack and public restrooms available. The trail is approx 3.5 miles in length. We went up to Linesville and back and down to mile 0 at Fries Road. If you're looking for more miles, can take Fries Road (low traffic road) to Tuttle Point where there is a beach and restrooms as well as campground newly renovated after have been closed since 2009. Can also follow Lake Road into Espyville. Beautiful area to ride. We got in a total of 23 miles between the trail ride and back roads near the trail . This trail runs through Pymatuning State Park.

Great Spring Ride

May, 2024 by vicki1960

Warm and sunny Spring day parked in Petroleum Center next to the Park Office. Very well shaded. Biked to Titusville and back for a 25 mile round trip. While in Titusville also rode on Queen City Trail and rode through Drake Well park. The vehicle bridge in Petroleum Center has been closed at least 18 months and a new one isn't scheduled to be rebuilt until 2026. In the meantime, the bridge is open for pedestrians and cyclists. And as always, our State Parks in Pennsylvania are free to visit.

Meadville to Conneaut Lake Ride-May 2024

May, 2024 by vicki1960

Biked from Meadville (Beans Trailhead) to Conneaut Lake, approx 11 miles one way. First 4.25 miles are asphalt paved. Cross over route 19 and go approx 2 miles on gravel section to the Bailey Road trailhead. Continue West using the new Watson Run Bridge. The remaining 4 miles are dirt and grass and follows the old canal. This is very peaceful and scenic. Trail ends behind Conneaut Cellars Winery in Conneaut Lake. Doable on a hybrid bike but a gravel bike would work better. Saw a Beaver Dam, family of geese and various birds. The last 4 miles pass thru PA State Game Lands. Dress accordingly per season.

Spring Ride

April, 2024 by vicki1960

Spring ride and so much flooding along the trail. French Creek way above its creek banks, into the woods and the fields along the trail flooded. This is due to so much recent rains. Trail is open but high waters along side.

Trail is paved and wide enough, so you will have no problems riding recumbant tricycles. It can get a little crowded with all the park visitors, especially with surrey rentals heading out to the monument.

Presque Isle State Park / Karl Boyes Multi-Purpose National Recreation Trail

On a cold, blustery, cloudy, gloomy early October weekday, I ventured out on the loop with low expectations for this bike ride. In an effort to beat the rain and just get in my Pennsylvania ride to check off state #36 in my quest to bicycle all fifty states, my negativity soon changed to joy as I thoroughly enjoyed my surprisingly fun trip around the peninsula.

Trail Link states it's a 13.4 mile loop, but I managed to do 18 which shows how often I was tempted to veer off the main path to enhance my experience, views, and photo ops.

There's so much to savor as the trail meanders through woods with the beginnings of fall color, goes by a multitude of ponds and bays, sandy beaches, and delivers you to several lighthouses. What was especially fun for this Southern Californian was the contrast between the relatively calm Presque Isle Bay side of the peninsula, and the sandy beaches with its wind driven waves crashing upon the shoreline. It truly sounded and looked like one of my beloved SoCal beaches.

If you're worried about the portions of trail where you have to ride on the road, don't be. The speed limit for autos is 25 MPH, and the bike lane is often just as wide as the auto lane.

For what it's worth, Trail Link's GPS helped me out quite a few times when I made a wrong turn, was unsure where to go, or was not quite sure where I was on the loop or peninsula. Thanks Trail Link!

I'll bet this park is a beehive of activity and swarming with people in the warmer months, but I thoroughly enjoyed the seclusion and beauty the time of year and threatening weather provided for me. It was almost as though I had the whole place to myself. I'm so glad I chose this location for my Pennsylvania bike ride. All in all, this retired teacher gives Presque Isle and Karl Boyes Trail an A+.

Beware of Ticks!

November, 2023 by vernvolk27

Walked the John C. Sheldon trailhead with my dog. Always mindful of checking for ticks, I proceeded to remove 10 of them from my dogs jacket and fur!!! Otherwise a very enjoyable walk.
