It's always a must when visiting Gasparilla Island to log some miles on this trail.
Continue up Janes Memorial all the way to the end. It's about 6 miles of dirt road. There you can either take the trail to the right or continue on an additional 6 or so miles of Janes that is now closed to traffic. The trail to the right is an old raised railroad bed and is a great cross country ride through the swamp. At the end is a camp site, lake and fire pit. This place is loaded with wildlife including numerous alligators. You need to be aware that they can be anywhere along the trail. Great ride and it can get muddy and wet after heavy rains. Saw 8 alligators last time on that rail. One was actually across the trail itself and didn't want to move. Had to wait it out.
Busy during a weekday afternoon cuz it’s a great trail. Smooth. Extremely well signed including maximum speed 15 mph. A few road crossings. A few bridges that go over busy roads. Covered benches. Everyone was courteous: bikers, runners, skaters. Would ride it frequently if we lived close.
Is this a somewhat boring concrete path: yes, agreed! However, if you have a cruiser bike, mountain bike, or any fat tire bike, try leaving the Stringfellow Road bike path, for the quiet, green unpaved side roads that run east and west generally.
We parked at Fisherman’s Village walked to the 41 bridge. Lots of bikers and walkers and dogs but the path is wide enough for all of us. We will go back. We went out to eat downtown and then had ice cream at the other end. Next time we will park over there and walk the other way. More parking. Highly recommend.
I live on the Venetian Waterway Trail. This is a really nice trail. I've seen Eagles, Dolphins, Manatee, Tortoise and lots of birds. Caspearson beach is at the south end. This trail also connects to the legacy trail that goes from Shamrock park in Venice to Palmer ranch in Sarasota 25 miles round trip.
Not a lot of shade so I wouldn’t recommend in mid summer but during winter is perfect. We really enjoyed it. We did entire length ended up a bit over 28 miles down and back
The trails are easy to follow and wide open. If you enjoy hills and valleys this isn’t for you. That being said they are great for flat out riding. Enjoy the scenery and possible wild life sightings.
Wonderful people safe and beautiful marked trails with with informative naturalist information. Can’t wait to try it in the fall and spring.
Loved the trail and I rate it as 3.5 stars for a trail to visit. As a roadie and as a local, I would give it 5 stars. Few crossings so you can cruise (speed limit is 15 mph).
Did not see the water fountains every mile, but many restrooms (port-a-johns).
Kind of a boring trail for some.
Did see 3 rabbits, 3 tortoise a black racer snake and I believe 4 scrub jays.
Camped overnight on the island and did two days of casual bike riding. Trails are awesome, they even have water fountains.
This bumpy sidewalk is not even a bike path......what a mess ! Will never even think about going there again. I am an experienced cyclist. How could anyone give this place 4 stars ?
