Gainesville-Hawthorne State Park Trail

plenty to see along the way

May, 2017 by stefaniespencer

There's always something new to see on the trail...I've seen goats, horses, deer (literally crossing in front of me), turtle, snake, woodpecker, and a hawk. It's nature in all its glory along the trail. There are a couple of hills but nothing crazy, flat ride for the most part.

Spring to Spring Trail

Good Sunday Ride!

April, 2017 by dburns1231

I rode the segment of the Spring to Spring Trail that began at Lake Monroe in DeBary. Lots of parking here at the state park once you navigate around all the boat launchers and find the area near the trailhead where the bikers park. The first three miles wind through plush vegetation and palms with a nice canopy with a few breaks under the power lines. The next three miles, the trail parallels busy two and four-lane roads. You are rewarded at the end of this leg with a nice boardwalk to travel over under a shaded canopy and back to more pastoral settings. About seven miles into the ride from Lake Monroe, the Spring to Spring turns into the East Central Regional Trail for another eight miles until the trail ends. There is a bike bridge over state route 415 that will get your heart pumping. Then a two and a half mile ride to the end of the trail. Total mileage from Lake Monroe trailhead on the Spring to Spring trail to the end of the East Central Regional Trail is 15 miles. Round trip will give you a good 30 mile workout. There are no restrooms or water once you leave Lake Monroe so plan accordingly.

Palatka-to-St. Augustine State Trail

Solid trail, few crossings, few people

April, 2017 by JTAYLOR673

My wife and I tried this trail for the first time on Sunday April 02 2017. We arrived around 9:00 am and parked off of 207 where the trail and road converge. (see other review for more details.) The parking was easy to spot and there was plenty of space. There is a typical poster billboard with some information about the trail here also.

The most difficult crossing was 207. But if you aren't in a hurry and trying to maintain a pace for training or performance it isn't a big deal. If you have young kids then maybe it would be a little more nerve racking.

We gave the trail a grade of A. It was peaceful, flat, in good condition, and in the shade for much of the ride. We gave the amenities a C+. We didn't see any restrooms. And didn't pass and grocery stores or restaurants. Although we didn't leave the path at all. The could possible be some places just off the path.

We didn't see any dogs, or snakes, or chickens, or really much wildlife. The people we saw along the trail were friendly and always said good morning.

Palatka-Lake Butler State Trail

Quiet and peaceful trail

April, 2017 by lmcorey

This bike trail is very shady most of the way, with nice sunny spots in between. One BIG plus is that the asphalt is not full of tree roots like some other trails we have been on. It is very smooth and well maintained. We rode on a Saturday morning, yet only saw a few other riders. We parked at Florahome next to a bathroom which is pretty clean. There is soap inside but you have to go outside to use a spicket. There are two benches and a place to park and lock your bike. The trail is the most quiet between Grandin and Putnam Hall, but we loved the trail between Florahome and Palatka as well. We will definitely be back, highly recommend this trail.

Gainesville-Hawthorne State Park Trail

Great Tree Covered Trail

March, 2017 by lsbd64

This is a fantastic biking trail. We parked at the Paynes Prairie State Park (north entrance) and rode to Hawthorn and back. There were lots of cars and people at the parking lot and we felt safe leaving our vehicle there. The trail is nice and peaceful and passes through mostly pine forests. The majority of this trail is straight, flat and shady. There are some hills and curves on the western end as the trail winds through the state park. There are lots of benches to pause for a rest, but bring plenty of water with you. This is a trail I would want to do again and again.

Gainesville-Hawthorne State Park Trail

Great trail, very scenic

March, 2017 by lmcorey

We are inexperienced bike riders (mid 50's) and chose this trail for our first outing. We parked at the Rochelle parking lot and felt safe leaving our truck there. We first rode towards Prairie Creek, and to my surprise, got there sooner than I thought. There is a very nice board walk and a beautiful place to have lunch. We rode on towards Gainesville until we saw a sign about "hills and curves", and decided not to head that way. If you are new to biking, or out of shape, it's probably best to avoid too many inclines. So we turned back east and headed past the Rochelle parking lot towards Hawthorne. There is a nice bathroom just left of the Rochelle parking lot that is clean and doesn't stink! We did see quite a few other people on bikes, more than I thought we would, but they were all friendly and we still had plenty of time when we were on our own. Overall, I would say this is a very nice trail and I would recommend it.

Good Neighbor Trail

February, 2017 by youker

I did this nice 4 mile trail this morning. The trail ends at the corner of Weatherly Road and Richbarn Road. Richbarn Road continues on for a few miles so you could extend your trip a bit. The start of the trail at Russell Road is just off South Main Street. The further extension into Withlacoochee State Forest requires a mountain bike and a willingness to deal with a rough surface. Withlacoochee State Trail

One of the best bike trails in Florida

February, 2017 by rodger.elgar

I rode the central portion of this trail (approximately 15 miles) from Lake Townsen Preserve near Nobleton north to Inverness. This section of the trail is mostly flat and tree-covered rolling past rural homesteads and pastures with occasional road crossings. The trail makes a number of gentle turns along the way. It was very lightly used when I rode it which allowed me to maintain a brisk pace without interruption. The old railway mileage markers along the trail are a nice touch. Floral City a few miles south of Inverness is a picturesque representation of old Florida with a few bike shops and eating establishments that cater to trail users. Continuing north brings you to some nice lake views and to several parks along the trail. Inverness is a larger community, but maintains a small town look. It's obvious that they done much to make the ride through town a pleasant experience by maintaining the railway heritage of the trail with the preserved old train depot and the red caboose. I took a side trip and rode around the town a bit to take in some sights and check out the old court house before turning around to make my way back to my starting point. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience. Highly recommended!

Thieves at Gainesville trailhead

February, 2017 by magnusdalen

We've biked this trail several times by parking at Hawthorne trailhead. Great trail. In late August thieves broke into our car when parking at Gainesville trailhead by smashing out two windows. The police say that break-ins frequently happen at the Gainesville trailhead. Therefore I recommend that you do not park at the Gainesville trailhead.
