this trail offers a view of nature and wildlife at its best as you ride along the trail. you will need to be on the lookout for snakes and turtle crossing the trail. The trail is clean and well maintained.
Been on many paved trails from PA to FL. This rates as one of the best. Great scenery and solitude, wildlife everywhere! There are stretches where you will see no other cyclists for miles, especially early in the morning. Make sure to bring a tire repair kit.
This trail was a great start to our vacation as it is flat and about 22 miles long. We enjoyed the whole thing which has about 750 ft. of elevation change. Best part is Winter Garden which is a beautiful town with a couple of fantastic bike shops and lots of places to eat. It is about 6 miles in from the western end of the trail. Also loved the West Orange Bikes and Rentals as they set us up with great bikes for the week.
Now let's not get too excited, we are talking about 900 ft of climbing over 32 miles but it is nice since most everything else is flat. Great trail, segregated the whole way, easy to ride. Goes through Clermont which has lots of places to eat, some right on the trail.
We also did the Hancock extension to get the total miles up and it has a terrific view. Highly recommend this trail.
We started at the Mabel end because we wanted to get water at Green Pond and Polk City. There is no water at Mabel. Lots of shade, lots of animals on the trail. We were surprised that the trail outside of the State Park were just as good for viewing.
We saw lots of gators especially from the three bridges 2.5 miles north of Green Pond. We saw at least 5 gopher tortoises, a pileated woodpecker, vultures and deer along the way. Trail is in great shape but bring enough food for the whole day. Well worth the trip.
You can park at Veteran's Park. This trail is a nice 10 mile ride, however, I will say that it is definitely all sidewalk. If you are planning on riding your "road bike" ...don't !! If you do, you can ride in the road for part of it but the roads are very busy and then there is about 3 miles of the trail running along Hwy 27 which is very noisy & not enjoyable. Because of this, I took my bike with hybrid tires instead. No clip in pedals because there is too much stopping/starting. On Hwy 27, cars are wizzing past. Definitely no way to ride your road bike on roadway there. The sidewalks are at times, uneven and blocked with tree trimmings, etc....There are many driveways and cross streets to watch for. Pay close attention here for moving vehicles. I was able to follow the trail just fine around the lake but there are no markers to keep you on track. Just follow the lake. I made two rounds in about 1.5 hrs.
Jump on Flatwoods Park Trail at Bruce B Downs and ride for hours in the beautiful Tampa outback. Its calm, serene. and safe. You can easily find a trail marker and never get lost.....Rangers patrol and there are plenty of water stops if you run out. Great place to ride the trails or paved bike path.
Two days ago I rode some of this trail, because I got a late start on it after riding the West Orange Trail. Lake County, FL does not provide trail maps to the bike shop, at Killarney Station and didn't have any in a map box attached to an informative sign next to the trail. They also do not list the length of the trail.
Before my bike was hit by a car and I still rode on roads, the longest, steepest hill I rode was a few miles away, from my house. I rode 2 hills, like that one, while riding this trail. As I rode down a hill approaching a road, the trail went both west and north. I rode north, to the monstrous hills, and looked back to see where the west spur went. I could not see it, after it reached the road. I looked again, on the way back to Killarney Station, and did not see where it went.
On the drive down from Georgia the day before, I scouted the Minneola Trail Head and saw that the trail went under US 27. Most of the road crossings, however, are grade crossings and require extreme caution.
Really love the loop is one way and wide open. You can travel at any pace on you bicycle with this much space. There were some reviews that stated parking is only cash but this is not true any more as the pay machine takes credit cards now for those that do not carry cash.
We rode six trails in the area last week this one was special because 30 years ago we lived here before the trail. Of course the growth in the area was a shock, but riding the WOT was exciting because of what it has done to the areas it passes through, The trail is well marked, smooth, scenery varies from one community to the next. The stations are spaced nicely and are clean. The ride in Winter Garden has a great bike shop that was a help to us, Wheel Works. Several nice restaurants right on the trail we could only do one. But mostly coming back do see what a great trail it is made the trip worthwhile. We will go back.
Went down to ride 6 trails in area last week, this was our favorite, saw alligators in the water and on the trail, gopher and slider turtles, hawks. deer and turkeys. Spent two days here to do whole trail because we stopped and took so many pictures. Smooth ride, trail maintained well, safe parking and friendly company of others riders.
Positives of this trail would be it's flat, clean and easy to access to the trail, has restrooms and parking available if you get there early on the weekend.
There really isn't much to see in terms of wildlife on the trial but it is a good trail to do some training in terms of mileage. I went on a Saturday so there was a significant number of people walking, running, skating, biking including a group that was speed biking as a group. If you want less traffic, I would suggest going during the week when school is in session. I did enjoy putting in some miles for my exercise.
