I purchased a home that backed up to This trail in 2001. As such, I have walked and biked it thousands of times. It doesn’t get old. Beautiful, not too crowded, wide. The trail was a lot of shade under large old oaks while in the “Pines,” and you can take it East to Oviedo, eating, and a mall or West to Baldwin Park for a quaint downtown bite or drink (brewery, etc.). Further West you can hit another Mall (kind odd…two malls on a trail?) or continue along to downtown Orlando!
Arrive early to avoid the crowd on Sunday. We had a good time nonetheless.
This trail is fine as a connection from Sanford, but isn’t a place to go as a destination ride. It starts at Celery Rd/Lake Mary Rd (SR 415) and terminates in Osteen where it runs into the East Central Regional Rail Trail (ECRRT). The trail is concrete and wide. It goes over the St Johns and loops under the bridge and rides along the northbound side for about 5 miles where it ends under the ECRRT.
We had a wonderful ride through quiet marshes and natural habitat. Biked 38 miles and enjoyed the whole trip, seeing lots of wildlife including multiple tortoises and viper snake. I highly recommend this ride. Bring plenty of water.
We parked in Lake Beresford Park and rode south to the “current” end of the trail which is Rob Sullivan Park. Lots of shade, great parking and amenities (bathroom, water) at both ends. Highly recommend. Round trip is approximately 18 miles. This trail has curves and hills. Felt great!
If you are ending the Orlando Urban trail at Magnolia or Orange Ave. continue on any of these streets south until you reach Livingston St. then make a left (go east). This will dead end at Maguire Blvd at which point you will have to turn right (go south). Maguire will turn into N. Crystal Lake Dr. This is where this trail starts. You can make circles around Lake Underhill park for more miles. Every time I’ve gone there, there are plenty of ppl around jogging, walking, biking. I saw otters one time near the edge of the lake.
We rode the northern section of the trail, from DeLeon Springs to W. Minnesota Street. A good portion of this trail is a narrow sidewalk. We had breakfast at Ponce DeLeon State Park (you cook your own pancakes) and then we hit the trail. Next time we will ride the next segment that starts near Lake Beresford Park. We checked it out, lots of amenities.
I was happily surprised to see a new section of this trail open, south of Oak Ride. There’s a good length that you can travel south all the way to Sand Lake Road. Beware a section that is being repaired just north of LB McLeod … but it’s possible to walk your bike past in the travel lane when clear. I do wish there was more signage overall
Rode out and back about 50 miles from the Edgewater Rotary Park towards Titusville. The trail is in near perfect condition with only a few minor surface bumps within the first few miles. This is a great trail for training as it really opens up after the first 1/2 dozen miles or so and you can really roll if you like. The scenery is also pretty good too. No services other than an “honor” station so take what you need unless you’re going all the way to Titusville.
This trail now extends to the Spring to Spring trail at Lake Monroe Park. If you go East to Mellonville road then south on the road to route 25, you will find a sidewalk bike trail east to hwy 415. The on the West side of 415 another sidewalk trail extends into a full blown double lane trail at Celery avenue up to Osteen connected to the Rail to Rail trail. Head West and connect to the Spring to Spring south trail back to Lake Monroe Park. Roundtrip is about 30 miles around lake Monroe. Stops at Green Springs park, Gemini Springs park, Debary Hall, and Beck Ranch park.
This is one of the most naturally beautiful segments of trail in the area. That said, there are many segments that are not complete yet, and there are many segments that are showing their age, with treacherous rough surfaces, cracked pavement, potholes. The whole area could use some love, but it’s so beautiful. Better suited to walking/jogging than cycling simply because it’s twisty and worn out in places.
This trail now runs all the way to the county line, across the St John’s River at 17-92 and connects to the Spring to Spring trail. It is possible to begin in downtown Sanford, followed the trail west and head north across the Saint John, Loop back east and follow the trail to Osteen, and on to Edgewater or Titusville, if you’re feeling adventurous, or head south at 415 in Osteen and back across the river. You will have to follow Celery Ave for two miles, to Melonville, But it is a roughly 26 mile loop around the lake with 24 on dedicated trail.
