Pine Island Bike Path

Nearby off-path sites, Pine Island, FL

December, 2018 by aybceo

This long concrete path links Bokeelia in the north, to St James City in the south of Pine Island.
Yes, it can be somewhat boring, due to lack of buffer landscaping and rest areas along the busy main road, Stringfellow. However, just off the path are some truly unique sights: such as the historically-significant Calusa homeland, Pineland (extinct indigenous peoples of southwest Florida), and beautiful conservation areas, like Galt Preserve.
Off-path side roads are flat, quiet and welcoming for bicyclists, especially beginning north of Harbor Drive-Pineland, keeping west and north. Don't be afraid to venture off the concrete, but bring plenty of drinking water and snacks.
Great photo opps: Bokeelia fishing pier, Pineland Marina pier, Calusa shell mounds, Randall Research Center.

Note: locally, bicyclists and residents have been asking Lee County, FL to reduce speed on Stringfellow to 45 mph. In the meantime, use caution when crossing Stringfellow Road.

Of interest to mountain bike and dirt riders: numerous dirt-sand roads crisscross Pine Island's many palm plantations. Some, but not all of these roads, are public property. Consult local maps for the best guides, available at Pine Island Library, Russell Road.

Pine Island Bike Path

Bike Path? Not really

September, 2018 by lermfl20

This is a poor excuse for not providing a decent bike lane on the two lane road that was just re-paved and could easily have included a bike lane on each side. The "bike path" is overgrown and hazardous if you are on a road bike. I used the road and had vehicles blaring horns to move but nowhere to go.

So hot so long so boring

This is A SLOG! Sidewalk along a two lane highway, 50 mph traffic. Few houses. No businesses. No shade no interest. Avoid it if you can.

John Yarbrough Linear Park Trail

Great ride

May, 2018 by jmc33vavols

You can get to this trail from downtown Ft. Myers city via Veronica Shoemaker Blvd. and Metro Parkway. Just about every type of wetland and aquatic bird in FL can be see along the way; Herons, Ibises, Aningas, Red-Tail Hawks, Ospreys, Spoonbills, Swallow-tail Kites, Turkey and Black Vultures, and an occasional Bald Eagle pair. Lots of snakes, beware of Moccasains (!). I even saw a young Lynx there! Pretty decent fishing when the water level is up, too! Gar, Tilapia, even some Trout below the dam. Oh, yeah, Alligators, a few big ones.

This is a great trail for all levels. I moved here recently from Boston and it’s 2min from my house. I recommend it to anyone out for a leisurely ride or walk.

Wonderful Walk

January, 2018 by dmarcil21

Great trail. This is a well maintained asphalt and wooden boardwalk type trail. It's great that people can walk their dogs along this trail. We didn't see any wildlife, but the walk was invigorating and beautiful!

Nice trail, wish we had more like it.

As a local, it's a great paved trail. You can walk or ride your bike knowing that grandpa is not going to run you over anytime soon. There are several bike lanes or paths in Naples, but traffic can be crazy at times where it can be dangerous to ride on those paths. This trail and Rich King greenway are great places to ride with kids and family where the cars are not a issue. Clean bathrooms and water, sometimes on the Gordon river you may even see a manatee. On the south end of the trail, if decided to get on the road you ride to the Naples airport, there is set of benches there right near the runway which you can see planes takeoff or land neat experience for the little ones. Great trail, go out and ride it.

this is an amazing Trail right through the middle of Fort Myers. we saw a painted turtles anhangia's, white cranes, snowy egrets , great blue herons , tri-colored herons, mallards, ibis, and there were fish on the beds in the creek. only saw five or six people during a two-hour walk from Six Mile Cypress to Daniels and then back. can't believe this nice Trail is almost in my backyard

What a great trail!

Biked from Billy's rental to the far end of Captiva and back. Just an excellent trail. On the return trip, near Ding Darling..had to stop on the trail because of a guy parked on it with his car! He was sitting behind the wheel and his wife was outside taking pics of birds in the nearby trees. Not enough room to get around him..I politely told him it was a bike trail...not for cars. He acted as though he didn't understand and we had to take the dirt route around him.

Great trail!

February, 2017 by root_karen

I was visiting the area and stayed in a hotel nearby. I walk regularly and saw the trail entrance my first day out. I made a point to check the trail out the next day. I was impressed! The trail is quiet in a very busy area. I enjoyed watching the wildlife in and around the canal. The few people I encountered walking, running, biking, and fishing were very friendly. I only wish there were bathrooms on the trail!

John Yarbrough Linear Park Trail

A worthwhile bike trail hidden in the city

January, 2017 by andrerx

I would recommend this trail to all levels of riders. It is straight, wide and for the most part well signed. I did not encounter much in the way of fellow riders, wakers, etc. Peaceful. It is generally away from the street traffic noise and shaded.
You can go slow, fast and ride side by side with companion.
Parking can be a challenge, however you will find it. I parked at Home Depot. Get on 6-mile cypress parkway via sidewalk and go east for about 0.75 miles. Trail starts there.
