Sammamish River Trail

Cottonwoods shedding - like it’s snowing

Smooth paved ride from Redmond trailhead to Bothell, and onto the Burke-Gilman there two days ago (May 26) - 24 miles up-and-back on my hybrid bike.

Allergy sufferers be aware: cottonwoods are shedding their "cotton" - the air is full of the stuff, like it's snowing lightly - not sure when it ends, but there's plenty of "cotton" still on the trees - and not sure when it began but the river is dusted in white, and there are places where the edge of the trail looks snow-drifted, thick with the stuff. Thickest in the few miles at either end of the trail.

My Friday midday ride (11:30 or so to 2) did see walkers along a few miles at the Redmond end, in Woodinville, and at the Bothell end, and other cyclists and a couple rollerskaters, but did not feel crowded, and I expressed and experienced politeness throughout.

The section north of Redmond to Woodinville is agricultural and lovely. A farmwife was just pulling in her "see the quilts" sign as I passed.

The park and arbors the trail passes through/by in Woodinville are lovely.

The first couple miles continuing west on the Burke-Gilman, in Bothell, were a dramatic change - urban, noisy, running alongside busy State Route 522.

I did not detect any odors from the river.

Not a lot of shade on this ride, so sunscreen up if you're riding midday.

There is one curlyqueue of tight turns on the Redmond end. A couple narrow bridges at either end.

Trail intersections are remarkably well marked - the once when not, I needed to just follow the trail's yellow-marked center line.

Rode a road tandem pulling a trailer with two doges from Pe Ell to rainbow falls state park and back. Had a great time, but should have had our fat tire tandem. Our 700-35 tires on the loose gravel, apparently layer down on the wet areas, made the going more work than fun. My other issue was the barriers at the road crossings to keep motorized vehicles off the trail. They use 2 metal posts instead of 1. This is more difficult to navigate on a tandem especially pulling a trailer. All said I will h ride this trail again.

My husband is disabled so we try not to ride on the city streets. This rails and trails app has been a life saver. We are visiting Spokane this week and someone recommended the Fish Lake Trail. What a great trail! Virtually zero vehicle traffic and only two super quiet streets to cross. Parking was a breeze and we felt safe leaving our car parked there.

Nice ride, but I probably won’t ride this trail again though. I started at the Showare Center in Kent. There were a lot of homeless camps scattered throughout the trail in Kent, and I got sideways looks from a few people sitting on chairs posted outside of their encampments. None of them seemed like they were gonna start something, just made me feel a bit uncomfortable.

April 24, 2023. First nice day this spring on the Tenino to Yelm trail (Tenino to Yelm and back).. A number of rough spots in the end near Yelm but most marked with yellow paint if you watch for them. Five or six road crossing about half cross paved side roads and half gravel drive ways. One crosses two lane highway had great sight lines and very little traffic to wait for. I may have seen 6 other cyclist and four walking during the out and back ride. And one other recumbent trike near the Tenino depot park.

maybe they’ve done a better job at restoring this, but these review seems so exaggerative to me. I went on a Friday afternoon and they were barely any people and maybe 1 to 2 homeless people that I saw on the trail. Although i only did half, it was beautiful. A little confusing at first but I got the hang of it. Theres some hills you can go on near the middle of the trail on the sides but they aren’t very stable.
