The only reason to ride this trail is to get to the trail along the beach! Or to commute. Not scenic at all. Lots of concrete all around you.
This trail is absolutely fantastic and represents true California! Right now, Feb 21, 2026 the part right in front of the water plant is completely sanded and you need to walk your bike quite far. We gave up after 10 min. This is the first time in 3 years that I have seen something like this. I hope the city will clean it up quickly. Also, the part around Venice, requires you to be on the street with cars. Not so enjoyable, especially on the weekend. But riding along the beach, between the sand, simply amazing!!!!!
We stayed at Ventura Beach RV-pricey but the location is perfect. The trail is outside the front of the RV park-easy to follow signs and find. At the north end of this trail it joins the Ojai Trail. The flowering bushes were breathtaking.
We stayed at Ventura Beach RV and the trail is at the front entrance. If you go left (north) you head down to the trail riding above the beach. This is kind of a wild part of the ocean. According to TrailLink the bike path ends at Emma Woods St Park. But really it doesn’t. It goes forever? We rode several more miles along Hwy 1 (PCH). There is a decent wide marked bike path along both sides of the two lane road. It seemed safe and lots to look at. If you turn right (south) out of the RV Park the trail goes to a more concrete promenade part of the ride on the beach. Lots of surfers. Would definitely do again.
We rode from Dockweiler RV Park North today (Sunday). Not as much traffic this way and a big portion of the trail has a separate walking section. Fun to go thru Venice! It is 9.5 miles to the Santa Monica pier and another 2.5 (total 12) to the blocked off section by National guard. That is the start of the fire area from the palisade fire. Never bored on this trail.
We stay at Dockweiler State RV which is right on the trail. From the RV to the south end of the trail is 9 miles. Lots of fun things to look at/people to see/places to eat. Try to avoid Sat&Sun if you can. Lots lots of walkers/dogs/other bikers but nobody seems bothered by anything. We love camping here and riding this trail. Never boring.
We were here Sunday after Thanksgiving. Nice tree lined trail through the town. Not many people.
Parking lot was closed when we tried to visit. No signage to explain why.

This is a great trail. We start in Ventura and head up. As long as you pay attention you are fine. The guy behind us took quite a spill on a section of pavement that lifted due to tree roots. We all stopped to check and minis quite a road rash, he was thankfully OK.
