October, 2026. We walked on this trail at the Kinzua Bridge State Park end of the trail. Beautiful fall foliage. Surface is crushed limestone in very good condition as it's only a few years old.
October 9, 2026: Though this trail is nearly 30 miles in length, about half of the miles are rideable and the Southern half is one bump after another. It's like a washboard. We've been biking this trail 12+ years and the last 6 years or so we've noticed a steady increase in roots uplifting the asphalt pavement to the point we ask ourselves "why are we doing this" during the ride. Bump after bump and now with fallen leaves on the trail, it's difficult to see the bumps. We parked at the Rockland tunnel North portal and biked to South Kent. We enjoy the few miles of smooth pavement through the St. George area. The tunnels are a "neat" attraction but you have to take the bumps as a trade-off. This is a trail which goes through some isolated areas, and there seems to be some vandalism to the signs along the trail. With this being one of the closest trails to us, we seem to only ride the Southern end once, maybe twice a year. And with the price of gas at practically $5 a gallon, it's still worth it to travel distances for better trail conditions elsewhere. Getting back to this trail is 30 miles in length, the first 12 miles or so traveling South out of Franklin, are in much better riding condition.
This was a nice 27.5 mile ride along the Allegheny River. The section that reverses N Kent road through the small subdivision of homes makes it interesting. Unchanging terrain becomes boring after a while. We enjoyed the historical markers which provide a better understanding of the area. It is a shame vandals live amongst us and are driven to destroy things like Indian God Rock. The northern section is very nice. The section south of the Woodland tunnel is a bit bumpy, but still better than other trails out there. The southern section could stand a little trimming of bushes etc. Toilets at both ends were atrocious.
This trail is a work in progress and coming along nicely. We've ridden different sections over the years. Surfaces vary. October, 2026 we started on the connecting Rail 66 Country Trail, mile marker 13 in Farmington Township, Leeper. Cycled to the Forest County line at mile marker 20 and seamlessly connected to the Knox & Kane Rail trail. We pedaled North to Marienville at mile marker 26. Still all on asphalt pavement. The pavement continued North of Marienville to mile marker 27.5. This is measuring the distance back to Shippenville. There the trail seemed to end and turn to dirt. New sign in Marienville at the restored train station and large gravel parking lot. Restrooms in Marienville but they were locked. Beautiful mural in Marienville. Signs of fall colors but too early in the month, should be beautiful as the month goes on!
October, 2026. This is one of Pennsylvania's best trails! At just over 20 miles in length, runs from Marianne to the Forest County line and seamlessly connects with the Knox & Kane Rail Trail for more miles. Rail 66 Country Trail is approx 7 years old, paved and in very good condition. Well maintained by awesome volunteers. Several trailheads along the way. Mostly shaded and some open farmlands. Food near the Marianne trailhead on 322, and at mile markers 12-13 in Leeper. Sporadic portable job site restrooms along the way but nothing brick and mortar. We parked in Farmington at mile marker 13 and biked to the county line at mile marker 20 then picked up the Knox & Kane Rail Trail to Marienville. Some fall foliage already. During peak season, this trail offers beautiful colors of Fall since there are many species of trees along the trail.
The trail has visibly deteriorated since I last rode it. Too many muddy sections, the grassy middle has gotten worse, and the roots bumps on the paved section are once again on the rise. The bridge which was under repair had no barriers or signs. I don't know what the status is with the bridge. A couple of miles outside Williamsburg there are a couple abandoned leftover carts, perhaps from a homeless person. I wonder if anyone even looked into this.
This could be the worst trail we were ever on. Youngwood and Greensburg should be ashamed they have not taken care of this. Plan on a crash or walking your bikes. Terrible.
Finally finished all the trails. They are beautiful and well maintained. I would recommend these trails to others that love to ride.
We rode from the Kane trailhead to the Kinzua Bridge. The trail is gorgeous…running through wooded areas, a golf course with a fountain, farms and ending at the Kinzua Bridge. Kane has lovely restaurants (e.g. Table 105 and Pepe’s) and lodging at the Kane Manor Inn.
September, 2026. We subjected ourselves to our annual ride on this bumpy section of the trail. Parked in Emlenton and made it 7 miles to just North of the Rockland tunnel. It's gotten worse since last year. More roots have pushed up the asphalt pavement. Bump after bump after bump then smooth for a very short distance, then more bumps. And it repeats itself over and over. Doesn't appear the grass along side of the trail had been mowed in a while, had to be a foot tall. Rockland Tunnel is lengthy, you need a light. The doors at the South entrance were installed a few years ago since the tunnel leaks and it would freeze in there and long dangerous icicles would form. Even in the Summer there's a trickling of water. This summer was very rainy so there's gonna be a leaky ceiling in there! On the plus side, the trail offers beautiful scenery, and views of the Allegheny River and plenty of shade.
Parked at the trailhead parking lot in Emlenton. You must drive down the bike trail about 500 feet and parking is on the right. The actual trail starts at Main Street and 8th Street at the Post Office Parking lot but trail parking is down the trail a bit. We rode 11 miles out and 11 miles back and I would say that 10 of the 11 miles are very bumpy. I ride an all steel Surly with 29x2 tires and this ride was rough. I would not recommend riding this part of the trail on a road bike with narrow tires. Although it was early September a lot a leaves covered the trail so seeing bumps and root-heaves was impossible, even going less than 10mph. Two downed trees were across the trail but easily rode around them. On a positive note, the trail is easy to find, there is ample parking, the trail is flat and very scenic as it parallels the Allegheny River the entire time. There are many nice private properties along the way and some benches occasionally, but those could be private as well. There were two porta-john toilets at the trailhead parking lot. Had the trail been smooth it would have been a great ride but this was one that I was glad when it was done. Oh yeah, the tunnel, about 4 miles from trailhead, is long and dark and at the very beginning, had a lot of water coming in from the ceiling, even though it was a very sunny day. Make sure to take a light with you. We only encountered one tunnel in the first 11 miles but there are more further on.
