Sheepskin Rail-Trail

currently piecemeal, but nice

March, 2026 by paulheckbert

When Connellsville to Point Marion is completed, the Sheepskin Trail should be fantastic, but for now the pieces are nice but short and incomplete - just a few miles each. Fayette County should pick up the pace and finish building this trail before we're all too old to bike them!

There are also pieces near Dunbar and Uniontown, but the pieces I biked most recently were around Point Marion. From the WV-PA border there is trail 1.5 miles north along the Monongahela River to Point Marion - this segment has existed in some form for decades, but I think it got a nice surface only in 2018. The newer sections (opened in 2022?) parallel Cheat River and Nilan Rd. There is a 1.2 mile long section starting at the north end of the Route 119 bridge over the Cheat River, continuing eastward. Then a gap of several hundred feet at the little community of Hope Hollow. Then if you go up a slope from Nilan Rd you can get onto another segment of trail, 1 mile long, that continues eastward toward the little community of Lake Lynn, stopping just before the coke ovens. The surface of these trails is crushed limestone. A new trail bridge is planned for construction by 2027 in Hope Hollow: https://www.pa.gov/agencies/penndot/projects-near-you/district-12-projects/sheepskin-trail-nilan-bridge

Browns Run Trail

A very nice trail

March, 2026 by vdeal

My wife and I walked this entire trail on a very warm, last day of February. The trail is very nice and pleasant with a lovely Browns Run always nearby with nice little cascades and it looks like a typical mountain trout stream. The gorge gets deeper as you go towards the western end of the trail. There were several people using the trail. I only gave it four stars because of the short length. It's too short for a bike ride but for walking, it's great. The previous review by stacy_riffle77 about the bridges being unsafe was absolutely not evident. There were no holes in the decking and none of the bridges creaked. In fact, these were some of the best built bridges I have seen including on some major, well-known trails. Go with confidence and enjoy. We may be back in a month or so to check for spring wildflowers.

Great Allegheny Passage

well maintained trail, beautiful scenery

October, 2025 by cjb1937est

Just got done this trail 10/9. Gap trail is a wonderful easy ride. Places we stayed were awesome! Bright Morning B&B, Ohiopyle suites. We stayed in the Karly. It was great! Right off the trail!! Coffee shop is great too. They also have a laundromat. We then traveled to Meyersdale where we stayed in the hotel airstream! Gotta stay here! It was great! Know that if you need to take the train back to Pittsburgh like we had too, it can run late. 5hrs for us. We met so many nice people along the way. That’s what I think of when I think of this trail!

Westmoreland Heritage Trail

absolutely beautiful

September, 2025 by amerchristophers

We rode the trail end of September 2025. Gorgeous day cool temps & sunny. Later in the day it got warmer but this trail has plenty of shade. Fallen leaves all over the trail made it so beautiful. Since we don’t have a fall season in Fla. we were embracing the beauty in front of us. We rode 8.5 miles one way. It’s a must do when you’re in the area.

Great Allegheny Passage

great trail for a beginner trail rider

September, 2025 by lob4fun

We just finished the GAP trail & C&O towpath 9/20 from Pittsburgh to DC. We took 8 days and our days ranged between 32 miles to 63 miles. Highly recommend this trail. Well maintained, accessible and clean port a John’s, always had plenty of toilet paper and were frequent enough to remove any anxiety about not being able to relieve yourself in privacy. Potable water was available along the trail which we still used a filter just to be safe. Beautiful trail, friendly riders and towns to visit. We rented a full sized SUV in DC and dropped it off at the Budget on Stanwix St just two blocks from fountain starting point. Worked perfectly to get going on our ride without delay.

Armstrong Trail

I started in Ford City and rode all the way up to the Brady Tunnel. The tunnel has overhead lights but I would bring a headlight just in case. Pack drinks and snacks because there is nothing else till you get to Bradys Bend if you go that far .Make sure you have a spare inner tube just in case. The trail is very well maintained some paved sections in Kittanning have a lot of tree roots sticking up…. The Bike Lab in Kittanning 724 -919-0308 is a newer bicycle shop in town .There is a Foxes Pizza right along the trail in town plus a Dunkin Donuts.

Great Allegheny Passage

Great ride on a great trail.

September, 2025 by joanna10_tl

I just completed the entire GAP. It was well worth it. The trail was in good shape and there was not too much traffic. I’d like to do it again.

Hoodlebug Trail

Did this trail this afternoon. Ride on the roads for short distances. Signs point where to go. Rode around IUP campus for awhile. Would do again if it was not so far from home (1hr or so)
