Recent Trail Reviews

Salt Creek Trail (IL)

From Busse Woods

March, 2020 by unckledonn

After reading the reviews on the Salt Creek Greenway Trail (my home trail) I wanted to make a couple comments. All the reviews are fairly accurate but please take into consideration the time frame. There have been many damaged areas repaired, then new ones that need repair over the years. Several years back I tried a new rout and got lost where the trail meets the Illinois Prairie Path which added many extra miles to my trip. That’s when I got my first “smart” phone and used Google maps and Trail Links App, they compliment each other. Trail Links has many photos, descriptions, information, and a very accurate over view of the route. Google shows the details of the rout surfaces fairly accurate, including the small trails that spur off the main route and cause people like ME to get lost.

About me, I am a 74 year old recreational rider who’s been using the trail, from Wood Dale, for more than 10 years, 20 to 40 miles round trip @ 12mph average speed. My current ride (and the last 6 years) is a 1988 Schwinn World Sport hybrid. This year I bought a Schwinn Trailway Hybrid (for the suspension) due to some rough spots (damaged asphalt) on the trail that wasn’t there a couple years ago.

My contribution is: Heading south from Busse Woods Forest Preserve (Elk Grove Village) the trail is asphalt for approximately 150 yards past Lake Street (Addison IL) where it turns to what I call crushed stone until just before it joins the IL Prairie Path where it turns back to asphalt. (NOTE) The IL Prairie Path is crushed stone in both directions many miles from this point except where the Salt Creek Trail joins it to cross over Route 83 and continues on the other side south on the side streets several blocks before it meets the asphalt trail again.

Chicago Lakefront Trail

Long solo marathon.

March, 2020 by rgmashak

Due to cancellation to a lot of road races I was able to run my virtual solo race to complete my Marathon yesterday. I felt safe running along this trail. Some of the paths was barricaded due to hazzards water damage from the lake but tor the most part it was passable. Thank you so much for the experience.

Deer Grove Trail

weekend fun

March, 2020 by angela.gutierrez

My family and I bike on this trail every Sunday, weather permitting. Our favorite is the yellow trail. It has a combination of paved and unpaved roads. It also has uphills, downhills, flat areas, curves, mud, and trees. Seeing deer in the yellow trail is not uncommon. It’s super fun!!!

Oak Leaf Trail

I walked it all in 1 day.

February, 2020 by rockbrentwood

I've been on every part of the trail, hundreds and even thousands of times in some places, since it was called the 76 trail; and other nearby wild areas that were de facto part of the trail before officially being made so.

On one occasion, this included circumnavigating the county on foot in 1 day; through almost every municipality in the county, mostly on the trail, but briefly off and beyond it into Waukesha county.

Fox River Trail (IL)

Pretty Good

It can get busy depending on what time you go. It also has a lot of debris at times as well

Hank Aaron State Trail

Great Trail

December, 2019 by watercupcake_tl

Really nice trail to walk or ride bikes. Good place to take your dog for long walks. Many access points. Even has an access point to Miller Park for bikers or trail hikers. Just wish they had a few trash receptacles every mile or so. Maybe then more people would pick up after their pooches.

Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail

Snow on the Trail

December, 2019 by kurthand83

Beautiful but cold ride with just a little snow on the trail and 22F. Saw a decent sized buck that ran in front of me down the trail for a mile. The trail is very well-maintained, at least the 15 miles I rode from Joliet.

Salt Creek Trail (IL)

Brookfield Zoo

November, 2019 by JPinner4

The path between Bemis Woods in Western Springs to the Brookfield Zoo is great! Nicely paved and easy to ride. You have to cross a couple of busy streets, but most of them have traffic signals.

Des Plaines River Trail

Southern end of trail in TERRIBLE shape

November, 2019 by JPinner4

I started at the southern end in River Forest. The trail was a flooded mudpit despite the fact that it hasn't rained in ages, was covered in huge fallen tree branches, and just in overall disrepair. Then, just past Fullerton, the trail literally disappeared INTO the Des Plaines River, leaving you NO choice but to turn back around. You're literally no better off on this trail than you would be if you just started off randomly making your way through the forest.

Prairie Trail (IL)

Great Trail

October, 2019 by chirx66

I mostly ride the crushed Gravel from the Genoa City Parking area down to Petersen Park. The trail is well maintained, although some of the asphalt is in need of some TLC. All-in-All, it's a 5 star trail as is most of the trails in Illinois. The parking areas are well maintained and convenient with Bathroom facilities and water.

Hebron Trail

Nice Ride

October, 2019 by chirx66

I have been riding this trail for 10 years now and it is awesome. I ride a MTB and a drop bar gravel bike and both are well suited for any conditions on this trail. I personally love to ride thru mud and water...it's just plain fun as is this trail.

Lake George Trail

Nice Indiana trail...

October, 2019 by tradrrr

I like this trail. Indiana is doing nice things for bikers/runners recently. You do have to stop at street crossings, but when you make it to the Whiting lakefront, it's worth it. Beautiful. It also passes a minor league baseball stadium and the mascot HOF.
