Cynwyd Heritage Trail

Great entrance to the River Trail from western suburbs,,

July, 2020 by rog667

I used to bike the Schuylkill River Trail starting from the Art Museum area for years. Now starting in Delaware County, this trail is a great entrance option to the SRT, crossing the river on its own bridge that puts you on the northern edge of Manayunk, beyond the bulk of trail congestion and road-hopping. (From there you can take the paved bike path on the side of Umbria, or go a block back down Main to the stone/boardwalk trail, to Shawmont Station and beyond.) This is a great option to avoid riding on busy roads, with blind corners, hills, little to no shoulder, and major intersections to get to the trail for a longer ride.

It’s beautiful, spacious, paved (though will have gravel and dirt spots after a heavy storm, so be aware)- overall a great find!

Headed north toward Manayunk is an easy downhill sloping grade, steeper than it seems until you come back: if you ride the trail from here to Valley Forge, the last mile or so back to Cynwyd Station on this trail is the longest climb.

The only drawback- but it’s a big one for many cyclists- is the Manayunk Bridge doesn’t open until 8am. That’s a few hours too late for most long rides. The option of following this trail to Belmont Ave., crossing at Green Ln., adds in all the dangers mentioned above, taking away the main advantage of this trail’s dominant feature.

I will definitely be using this trail when I start rides later in the mornings or mid-day, but will miss it as a safe option to the SRT on earlier (mostly all) rides when the bridge is, for some reason, closed.

Well shaded, easy terrain. Our family loves hiking halfway down the trail to a little “beach” along the creek where the kids and dog can jump in and swim.

Pomeroy and Newark Rail Trail

Wide, mostly paved, and just under 2 mi. easily ridden with hybrid bikes

July, 2020 by chessnut59

This has parts that are next to roads like sidewalks, but most of it is entirely off road. Though most of it is wide and paved, there is a section that is slightly narrower and has a backed pulverized tiny stone which makes a reasonably good surface for my road tires on my hybrid bike. It will get your bike frame dirty from what gets slung by your front tire. The grade is just a little steeper than most rail trails, but it doesn't last that long. It goes though a large complicated intersection. The traffic light walk don't walk system works well.

James F. Hall Trail

Wide, Paved, and 1.76mi.

July, 2020 by chessnut59

This trail was paved, wide, unfortunately only 1.76 miles long, and entirely off road. It, however, connects to Pomeroy and Newark Rail Trail which goes a little less than 2 miles. There is an active railroad paralleling the trail (we saw two trains go by while riding our bikes). There were parks, playgrounds, ball fields, a skate board rink, and adult exercise equipment along the path. The hills on the trail were both gentle and fun.

Little Lehigh Parkway Path

My Fav Place to Ride

July, 2020 by cmaylward

This is my favorite place to ride. So scenic in all seasons including a red covered bridge. Plenty of parking spots, water fountains and restrooms. Trail is for all levels. There are 2 steep hills on one side but just stick to the other side of the creek to exclude them.

Audubon Loop Trail

Feels like European palace gardens

July, 2020 by collinsmalcolm

This trail feels like European palace gardens and woodland . . . it has that "estate" feel to it. The drawbacks are the noise from cars and the very scary short segment on egypt road (they should put some form of barrier there, someone is going to die one day).
While the animal life in general is abundant if you come in June just after dark there are tons and tons of a rare species of synchronous firefly in the fields.

Royersford Riverfront Trail

short but sweet

July, 2020 by joelkring

Not bad for an urban trail, to one side is buildings, to the other side is the river. The trail and the park it travels through are well maintained. Worth a visit if you are riding the Schuylkill River Trail through Spring City.

Frog Hollow Trail

not worth the time

July, 2020 by joelkring

Beside there being no place to park, except along the narrow road, there is no clear entrance from the road onto the trail. Add to that the trail is becoming overgrown by lawns, due in large part to its short length (the 0.4 mile length is generous) and poor access. Not recommended.

Zacharias Creek Trail

very scenic short trail

July, 2020 by joelkring

For the most part this is a very scenic trail. The trail now extends briefly beyond Green Hill Road and there are 2 parking areas at Heebner Park, one off of Heebner Road and the other off of South Valley Forge Road. There were clean, well maintained rest rooms at Heebner Park. The one improvement that I would like to see is better signage in the maze of trails.
