Mon River Trail

Flat, scenic, and convenient

May, 2021 by ejbeckl

The trail is in 2 sections. A north and south section. In between these 2 portions is Morgantowns' downtown Caperton Trail. You can ride the entire Mon River Trail by using the 6 mile Caperton Trail as a connector. Bringing the total mileage to around 30miles one way.

The entire trail is currently maintained very well. Any bike should be able to easily traverse it. No downed trees or unkept areas. The path was very packed down and smooth for not being asphalt. A gravel/road bike would have no problem. I was able to maintain a consistent speed I normally have on asphalt.

There is a parking area for around 5 cars that's almost exactly in the middle of the trail, east of I-79 bridge. Morning could be a 30mile round trip to do the south section. Grab lunch back at your car. Then head north for another 30 miles doing the Caperton Trail and North section of Mon River Trail.

Montour Trail

Don't start at Clairton if you expect to go far

May, 2021 by keltic

We started at Clairton today, spent about 2 miles on trail, were thrust onto the highway, and the rest was "share the road" back roads without much traffic, but definitely not a trail ride. Disappointing. We turned around after about 7 miles, drove to Peters Twp and picked up the trail there.

That part was much better! Nice trail, shaded ride, places to rest, and plenty of people to greet as you pass by.

Mahoning Shadow Trail

Lack of Distance and Defining Features

April, 2021 by barrysherry

This is a wonderful trail in a beautiful area. It would not be a destination trail because of its short distance (15 mi.) and lack of defining features (no tunnels, just one small trestle). It's basically Punxsutawney in the middle of two seven-mile spurs - one to Winslow to the east and Valier to the west.

The trail is crushed limestone and I rode it with my road bike with 700x32c tires and could have been smaller. There are no facilities on the trail (food, water, restrooms - although you are in a forest) but you are never more than seven miles from Punxs'y. The on-street portion in Punxs'y is poorly signed and my experience mirrors with many reviews.

The western portion is basically flat and follows the Mahoning Creek which is beautiful. It also passes a number of abandoned coke ovens in the hillside worth stopping and exploring. The eastern portion follows the Mahoning as far as Cloe. Leaving the parking lot one needs to go straight on Cloe-Rossiter Road for about 200 yards just past Cloe Lumber where the trail continues. The last four miles average 2% grade uphill which can be taxing for some users but it sure makes a nice ride back. This portion is also in a deep forest with no sign of human activity - very peaceful and serene.

On the spring day I rode I saw about a dozen other riders/walkers on the portion to Valier. Past Cloe, I saw no users on the Winslow portion.

This trail is well-kept and is pretty, particularly along the Mahoning Creek. The locals should be and are proud of their trail. Users just need to be aware that there are no facilities on the trail but plenty in Punxsutawney.

Little Crabtree Creek Trail

Great little walk

April, 2021 by twoskies57

Just a pleasant short out and back walk. Trail is in excellent condition, scenery represents the area well. A very slight slope should no be much of an issue for anyone. Including children. Easy to find with ample parking nearby. Benches along the way if you need to rest or just want to take a enjoyable break. At a easy pace, about an hour to cover the out and back, add the lakes into the mix and you've got a really nice workout walk. Great way for the family to spend a few hours together outside

Three Rivers Heritage Trail

Lovely ride except Baldwin area

April, 2021 by amcmoss

The trail is wonderful. I feel safe and comfortable while enjoying beautiful scenery. I love going as long or as short a ride as I want each time. The only frustrating part is the poor drainage in the section located in Baldwin Borough. The ponding is in such a small area one would think it could be addressed without major infrastructure changes. The question is why it not corrected?

Armstrong Trail

Nice Hike By Water

April, 2021 by cynthiastarr.author

Armstrong Trail is across the road from the parking lot for the Cowanshannock Trail, you can take a easy hike on the crushed gravel with the site of the river which runs beside it. If you go in Early Spring bundle up the wind off the river is icy cold¿ but sight is pretty.

April, 2021 by cynthiastarr.author

Closed for construction since March 8th no indication of when it will reopen. Really looking forward to hiking it since others said there are some pretty sights. To compensate the Armstrong Trail is across the road from the parking lot you can hike on the crushed gravel with the site of the river which runs beside it in the meantime.

Panhandle Trail

Nice day to ride the Western Half of this trail

March, 2021 by mikehood71

First time on this leg of the trail. Found the parking lot very easily I think it was about 2 miles east of the bridge which crosses the Ohio river. Nice signs at exit showing were the parking lot was located. Very large parking lot but no where to change clothes. Heading east first couple miles were packed gravel then paved nicely for the rest of the trail. Lots of rest stops and scenery here. Long climb up Midway then to to McDonald bridge / trestle where I rode on the panhandle connector at nice picnic table rest stop. 22 miles to this point decided to head back to Weirton. I also went on the unimproved section toward town. Maybe someday the trail will go to the ohio river.

Gem of a Trail

March, 2021 by nansusan

This is my go to trail. Southern end is in Braeburn. Northern end is under bridge. Soon the trail will go past the bridge to connect to Kiski junction, running alongside the Baker Trail. Great to hike in all seasons and to bike when the weather is good.
