Old Plank Road Trail

Review for inline skating

July, 2018 by gitahouse

The reviews are ALL about biking. This trail is sort of inline friendly but it has a lot of flotsam, sticks, debris from trees, and there are lots of repairs made with that sticky tar substance, that the skate wheels are not too good on. Some parts are pretty rough asphalt and some are fairly smooth. Bigger wheels are probably better, though they also make you faster. The street crossings are semi cut curbs with lots of bumps and broken cement to make your wheels stick, unless you're good at navigating these obstacles or good at jumping. This gets worse the further east you go on the trail. *There's a few places where the trail runs downhill (going W at Wolf Rd for one) and then spills directly into a busy street. You'd better practice your stopping skills. I think they should send a sweeper down this path at least a few times a month. I bike this trail and it's really good for that. I've skated it as well, but that was over 10 years ago when I was more confident. One bad fall with a twisted rotator cuff made me more wary since (a jogger wouldn't make way and my avoidance of her made me lose it). People walking 3 abreast and those with dogs on long leashes are also good to avoid.

Erie Lackawanna Trail

nice, but...

July, 2018 by ltlarrow

Ditto on the comments about bumpy sections. The trail could use some better signage where it deviates, and could use mile markers. Also, I suggest if you start in the north, park behind the Wendy's next to the Indiana Welcome Center along I-80. Besides the south end, that's the only restroom you will find on the trail. And watch out crossing roads...seldom will drivers stop for you.

Fox River Trail (IL)

Aurora to Algonquin

July, 2018 by bmpayne84

Yesterday I rode the fox river trail from Aurora to Algonquin and luckily did not have to ride back. I entered the trail off Illinois street and made my way north. The total trip was 35 miles. It was everything that I hoped for as far as beautiful nature and scenic forestry. There were moments where I was Uncertain where the trail ended and resumed when getting into different downtown areas. However, the map from this site helped me immensely and I am So grateful for that. In st Charles, the signs will lead you every step in the right direction as to where to get back on the trail. In south Elgin and Elgin it was not that easy, but again, the map helped with that. It wasn’t until mile 25 in Dundee when I started to “feel the burn.” The next ten miles were a tad painful heading into Algonquin. My plan was to exit off the trail and head to Scorched Earth Brewing but the trail was a bridge going over the road that I needed To exit on. I luckily found a fence in some thicket that I lifted My bike over and then climbed. I had Made it! My girlfriend greeted me there and had lunch ready for me that we brought into the brewery. All in all, this trail is absolutely gorgeous and I cant Wait to do it again. Thanks for reading. -Bryan

Cal-Sag Trail

Cal Sag

July, 2018 by andrewuk1992

Ashland to Halsted paved. Bridge over the Branch of the Little Calumet river at Fay’s point is complete. Trail east of Ashland need to be completed still in order to link to Blue Island along the waterway, for now you’ll have to go by street to get to Blue Island business district.

Salt Creek Trail (IL)

Don’t start at Busse

July, 2018 by ajh1964_tl

I started at Busse Woods and the first 3miles or so we’re all residential streets and very confusing signs and detours ended up getting off the “path” and was headed towards O’Hare airport realized we were going the wrong direction. When we finally made it past Irving Park Road there was finally trails but poorly maintained. We decided after 8 miles to head back to Busse Woods where we parked. Next time I would consider parking further south and avoid the trails north of Irving Park Road as it is pretty much all street driving.

Veterans Memorial Bikeway (IN)

Narrow Corridor

July, 2018 by eric.kelleher

This trail used to be great back in the mid-late nineties when the ATV's kept it up with their riding on it. Guess that crowd has moved on. Used to mountain bike it all the time from Crown Point to Hebron...it was peaceful and never saw anyone on it except one or two dirt bikers. If/when it get develops, it has potential as a beautiful trail, but when they get developed, they lose something.

Salt Creek Trail (IL)

Always worth it

July, 2018 by epc.lots

Full of variety, with the chance of stopping for bbq along the way, this is a trail that is fun.

Last time I rode it (last week) there were a couple of flooded spots (under the expressways), one was walkable (with the bike at your side), the other was impossible. Fortunately it was possible to go thru a side road and bypass the flooding.

Centennial Trail (IL)

Access closer

June, 2018 by ampozdol

We love riding this trail. Since it does not go through a lot of Forest Preserves you do not see many pedestrians. We rode to the end point off of Willow Springs road 6/16/18 and the bridge to the start of the path was blocked with signs saying that the bridge was closed until October 2018. No warning signs up the week before.

Centennial Trail (IL)

Excellent trail but, FYI

June, 2018 by marke1

FYI, the bridge you use to access the trail from Columbia Woods in Willow Springs was suddenly closed today, 6/16/16. The sign says bridge out 6/18 which would be Monday & would make more sense but they put concrete barriers across already anyway. You’ll have to access the trail elsewhere until they finish their bridge repairs.

Oak Savannah Trail

Parked trains block the Oak Savannah trail.

June, 2018 by 1diver

Twice in one week a parked train in between Colfax and Hendricks blocked the Oak Savannah trail near the Oak Ridge Prairie. It doesn’t even look like there’s an engine hooked up to it. Riding home from Chesterton is very fusterating when the trail is blocked. The triail from OakRidge Prarie to Chesterton is a beautiful ride but the parked trains make it useless.

Waterfall Glen

Agree with other 5 star reviews

June, 2018 by chrishawry

For the most part, I agree with the five star reviews. It is a beautiful trail that takes you through forest, past a beautiful overlook, over bridges and has several bathroom/outhouses every 3-4 miles (located in the parking lots). I did not see horse poop as one review indicated and I was able to handle the 4-5 larger hills (I'm in my 60's so most bikers should handle them fine). The trail wasn't too busy (midweek) and you get the feeling that you are far from civilization because of the vast number of trees and open spaces. I took the advice from one reviewer and went counterclockwise around the circle. I really think that it had better runs in that direction. The only negative for me is that the trail takes you across a couple of busy roads and traffic didn't stop for bikers. My distance clocked in a 10 miles. Finally, this trail is excellent for really hot days because of all the shade. Enjoy!
