Erie Lackawanna Trail

Like it for Cruising only -Beer Drinkers too

July, 2020 by blondie76

I’ve been on this several times. I’d say the weirdest time was during July 4. We ended up getting a beer at a brewery in Crown Point. I don’t recommend it for those who want extensive workouts because it’s very flat. Still portions thru Highland can be pretty and parts South. The Northern section is in Hammond and it’s fairly close to another great Brewery called 18th Street. I still would like to find out how I could safely go to the Lake from here.

Little Calumet River Levee Trail

Interesting ride, no easy access to cross Cline Avenue

July, 2020 by blondie76

I have to say this route is actually interesting. Bridges are kinda neat. With extensive civil repairs over years to the Little Calumet River you can see a lot of wildlife here. I enjoyed seeing deer, various geese, duck, coyotes, Blue Herons, and fish. From starting in Munster the trail is really an accessory to Erie Lackawanna Trail. It goes thru Munster, South Hammond and ends in Highland at Indiana 912. No bridge to cross. It does not easily cross to Griffith. I have seen some segments of it in Gary, along I94. I’m not sure why they say it ends in Gary. Maybe it will one day? This is an interesting stretch because it crosses the river with some nice bridges and it can lead you to Erie Lackawanna at least a few points.

Shady, paved and good signage. Make sure you map out which trail outlet you want to take prior to beginning. Trying to figure it out after coming off an elevation change is not good. Overall we enjoyed this track.

Erie Lackawanna Trail

A decent (but not great) trail

July, 2020 by jdstallinga

I've biked this one often because it is close to home, but I don't consider it as good as many other trails in the area. There is not a whole lot of shade on this trail, so you may want to plan to ride it on a cooler or cloudy day, or make sure to use sunscreen. There are also some very bumpy sections, especially a stretch in Schererville which they desperately need to repave. It's certainly not one of the more scenic trails, so don't expect to travel through woods and see birds and wildlife, etc. There's just not much to look at. There are also quite a few busy streets to cross so be careful if you are riding with your kids. I guess the one unique highlight this trail can claim is that there are four breweries right along the trail, or at least within a block or two (New Oberpfalz, Byway, 18th Street, Wildrose). You can also stop off at the Indiana Welcome Center, which is nearby as well.

Prairie Duneland Trail

Pleasant, Shady Trail

July, 2020 by jdstallinga

This is always my go-to trail when it is a hot or sunny day because I would estimate about 80% of this trail is shaded by a nice canopy of trees. A great place to park and begin the trail is at the trail head on Hobart Road where you will find Trail Blazers Bike barn. The bike barn is a good place to get any needed tune up or repairs for your bike and also to enjoy a refreshing smoothie or shake when you conclude your trip.
Reviews from years ago mention a "bumpy" ride, but here in 2020 please be assured that is no longer true (with the exception of perhaps a brief 50 yard section where the pavement is a tad bumpy, but that's it).
A few miles into the trail I often stop at Tate's Place, which is right along the trail and a great place for breakfast. They welcome bikers from the trail and have a nice shaded outdoor patio where you can eat.
Besides that, however, there are no other places to stop along the trail until you get to the end in Chesterton. There, you can turn right onto Broadway and find a Dairy Queen, Val's Pizza and Grinders, and Chesterton Brewery (be aware they don't open until 3:00).
This is a pleasant and easy trail to ride; there is only one small hill to climb for an overpass, but the rest is flat. There aren't any spectacular views or scenery, except for woods, parks, and the back yards of some well-kept homes.
Note: You can travel down Jackson Street and eventually access the Dunes Kankakee Trail, so I decided to do that, but probably won't bother next time. It's not worth the work in getting there (streets, bridges, ramps...) just for a couple miles of a trail.

Kankakee River Trail

Instant favorite!

July, 2020 by ericevan

Instant bike trail favorite! I've been putting two wheels on northern IL paths for about 30 years and covered quite a few trails in the upper third of the state. For some reason this one never registered though, until last year when I found it listed on this website. The trail seemed on the smaller size (mileage) for my liking and at 1.5 hours away, it didn't jump to the top of my list. But the other day we decided to make our way down and give this one a shot. An hour later we were very glad we made that choice!

The KRST trail is short in length, but looped, it's a decent ride for any biker. There are several places along Rt 102 to park and hop on, or you can pick it up from the main park entrance. We decided to park in the main park entrance so we'd have access to the bathrooms once we finished.

The trail is a beautiful, canopied, zig-zagging ride that carves through forested areas sculpted along the Kankakee River. An all-asphalt path, which has some pretty nice hills that take you from bluff-top to river-side in a heartbeat and back up again. Just west of the main parking area is a suspension bridge that spans roughly 75 feet over a river filled canyon with high rock walls and beautiful views. This is without a doubt the finest view in the park. The trails also feature several other bridges, rock formations, and terrific forestry.

Despite the relative shortness of the trail, this park is worth its weight in gold. Rarely in northern IL will you get these types of views and rewarding scenery. Make your way over and give it a whirl!

DuPage River Trail

June 20, 2020 Review

June, 2020 by chatham63

This trail is inaccurately described as asphalt. It is partially asphalt and crushed stone. The trail is poorly marked and has too many interactions with busy roads to cross. Would not recommend for any attempt of a long distance ride as not enjoyable.
