Allegheny National Forest - Twin Lakes Trail

Great Trail with lots of potential!

December, 2019 by srhayduk

I've hiked the entire trail from end to end. It's not an easy hike. The trail has been neglected for years, but has recently been adopted by a few locals who are working hard to get it back in shape. There are areas on the west end that have been rerouted due to beaver dams flooding the area. Follow the diamonds and look for orange ribbons to guide you. There are areas of heavy blow-down which have been cleaned up, but you'll find yourself climbing and ducking a bit. There's a camp site at the top of the hill that overlooks the valley below and another at Coon Run. Both are great for camping overnight or just a day stop. Most of the trail on the east end has been marked for night hiking as well. During winter months the TL Rec area is closed so you won't be able to park at the campground. You can park at Seven Mile Road, hike 2 miles east to the Twin Lakes Campground and walk around the lake (it's beautiful at night, bring a headlamp). Or you can travel west from this parking spot and continue onto the remaining 14+ miles of trail. There is another parking spot along Route 66 just south of James City (on the left). And a few others along forest roads 152 and 133. There are plenty of natural springs along the trail, keep your eyes open for these, as they are not yet marked with signs. I suggest hiking smaller sections of this trail (out and back) if you have never hiked it. But it would make a great 2-day backpacking trip too! Park one vehicle at Twin Lakes Rec Area (during open season) get dropped off along FR 133 at the NCT trailhead. You'll be hiking almost 19 miles from start to finish, including the two connecting trails on each end.

An excellent addition to the Rail Trail world

November, 2019 by djayfrank

We walked a bit more than half the trail from Kinzua Bridge today and it's one of the best designed and maintained we've encountered. We plan to go back to hike from the Mount Jewett end tomorrow to finish the whole length. We'll be adding it to our list of Rails-to-Trails donations each year going forward.

As a bonus, as we were hiking in the woods along the trail, a train travelled the current rails, not far off. I love having an actual train running nearby when I'm hiking rail trails, so a great day after Thanksgiving hike.

early winter trail running

November, 2019 by fdodeller

Ran the first few miles at dusk down from St Marys starting point after early winter snow flurries. Great ambiance as snow dampered sounds.
First half mile definitely wet (water up to the ankle at times) until one reached the better maintained section.
Very gentle slope uphill on the way back did not penalize speed.

Fall Ride

October, 2019 by vicki1960

Biked from Marianne to Leeper, and back for a 25 mile round trip. Where the trail ends in Leeper, they are in the process of extending it. Section has been grated and crushed limestone has been applied. Progress is progress!
Fall foliage all along the trail. Just North of Lucinda, on the right side of the trail is a Friendship garden with beautiful hand painted rocks, it was a nice treat to see and find them.

Sadly, my least favorite trail thus far

October, 2019 by bespo09

This trail fairly close to State College, so thought we would try it out. Yes, there are some scenic sections but also numerous crossings. The grade from Curwensville to Grampian just took the fun out of it for me, but I was determined to reach the end.

Nice ride

September, 2019 by jokerjoe21

Parking near the football field in Brockway, I road up to the swinging bridge twice now. Saw multiple deer both times. Nice easy ride. Took my fly rod with me and fished a bit. Caught one brown trout and let him go. I will be back to do the rest of this beautiful trail. Had a nice breakfast at Morelli's then after the ride was over we went for a great steak at The Rocky Grill.

David S. Ammerman Trail (formerly Clearfield to Grampian Trail)

September 15, 2019 ride

September, 2019 by rpd1

Started at trailhead in Clearfield behind Family Dollar. Rode the 10.5 miles to the end at Grampian. The scenery is mostly wooded areas and 1 farm. You will ride beside mountain stream the last 5 miles. The trail is crushed limestone and wide enough to ride side by side. There are port a johns at mile marker 1.9 and 8.1. If you are going to ride the entire trail, start at Clearfield. The last 4.5 miles are all up hill. When you turn around at Grampian, the first mile is easy peddling and the next 3.5 miles you will coast. The last six are not to hard either. The only problem is at Curwensville is you have to cross 2 roads at a traffic light. I had to look for the trail. Not well marked here. Go straight across the road then turn 90 degrees right across the next road. The best scenery is the last 5 miles up the mountain.

Beautiful trail

August, 2019 by donaldhahh9

I road the whole trail yesterday out and back, where the slide was they have made a new trail to go around the sinkholeit drops down to the creek then back up to the trail. Road up the spur trail for 5 miles but it was very soft after the rain and up hill so we turned around and headed back down to main trail which is in great condition, and the two tunnels are very cool, need a light or you have to walk thru them

Very nice walking path with great scenery, took our 2 small dogs with us & they loved it! Only were able to do about 3 miles due to a thunderstorm but it was perfect. Started at the Bridge, next time maybe we’ll start in Jewett.

Great Secret Trail

August, 2019 by mykeferraro

The trail is awesome! It’s an old rail bed that follows the river south for 4 miles from Tidioute. It’s soft, grassy ground (not gravel or cinders) is flat. There are some puddles when wet but the trail is well maintained and a real treat use! Will use it for running and biking every chance possible when in the area.

Aug 9 ride

August, 2019 by rpd1

Parked at Marianne and rode to Leeper. It is a 12 mile ride. Had trouble finding parking lot on rt 322. Sign for trail is small. Parking lot next to a meat processing store. Can park up to 12 cars. The trail to Leeper is all paved. You will ride through woods and farm land. My wife and I agreed it is much easier riding back from Leeper. More downhill and you will coast at times. On the way you will pass through Lucinda. You will see an old train station, general store, and it appears an old hotel. You can pick up a trail map at the start of your ride. There is no water on the trail but there is a sign to bike 1000ft off trail to an ice cream stand. There is a restroom at mile 7.5. This trail is an easy ride and there are future plans to pave more of the trail. I rode a quarter of a mile on the unpaved trail at Leeper and it is very rough. When they pave more I will do this trail again. RDD
