Fort Fraser Trail

my 'home' trail

July, 2019 by antler.eh

This is a trail that I ride 2-3 times a week. A lot of times we will park on the south end at a Pizza Hut off of Rt 60 just a little west of the trail. It makes for a nice place to have lunch after our ride. The trail is nice, but is getting some rough areas that need to be repaired. There is a bike store on the west side of 98 that has a Saturday morning group ride at 7:30 that uses the trail, so, sometimes a bit of congestion. A lot of nature along the way, especially if you have an off-road bike, you can take a 1/2 mile paved spur that leads to the Circle B Bar Preserve. Beware, there are alligators in THEIR natural habitat.

Auburndale TECO Trail

A nice, easy trail.

April, 2019 by jimheckel

This trail is very peaceful and easy to walk. Mile markers every half mile (though some are obliterated), potable water on both ends of the trail, and a bathroom on the south end. I recommend bringing a cap, sunscreen, sunglasses, bug spray, and a water bottle; you will need them. It takes me about five hours to walk the whole thing, round trip. The only fly in the ointment is that there's a lot of really trashy yards near the trail - mostly old cars and buses that have been sitting and rusting for a long time. I even saw a few cars from the 1950s that have apparently been rotting for decades! That's made up for by the beautiful scenery.

In a nutshell: I recommend this trail for a beginner. It's in a straight line. so you can't get lost, and it's close to civilization besides. It's a good way to see rural Florida, but close enough to civilization so that bears and crocodiles are not a problem.

Trail is great. Bathrooms are horrible!

March, 2019 by tomargaret

We have done the Auburndale Trail many times. The trail itself is fine and well maintained, however, the bathrooms are a disgrace! Many times in the past it would be out of toilet paper or slightly dirty. We overlooked these shortcomings, thinking we were just catching it on an off day. Today it was so horrible I felt I had to say something. I also have photos to prove my point but I haven't figured out where to post them yet. The women's toilet was so backed up it was disgusting to even look at. There was toilet paper and trash all over the floor. The men's bathroom didn't have the same extreme problem, but was totally out of toilet paper. A better job needs to be done.

Be careful riding this. It is all residential sidewalk. Lots of little obstacles.

Lake Jackson Trail

A series of driveway crossings

March, 2019 by flmark

This is a HORRIBLE trail. In fact, ‘Trail’ is a misnomer. About a third of this ‘trail’ is okay. For the rest of it, you are either paralleling an extremely busy state highway or traversing what is best described as an endless sea of driveway crossings. And all those driveway crossings mean that all you see are houses IN FRONT OF THE LAKE!!! If you want to actually bike around a lake, while actually seeing that lake, head north to Lake Wales. You can do the short trail that is shown here on trailLink, as well as the path that goes about half way around the lake, which is not shown here. I can't overstate how much I hated this 'trail'.

Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail (LOST)

Good experience today

March, 2019 by flmark

The number of negative reviews had me apprehensive, but I wanted to give it a try since I live about 70 miles from Clewiston on the Gulf Coast. I am writing in part because no one seems to be writing anything positive. Today, I did the trail from Moore Haven to Lake Harbor, about 20 miles. Except for one screwy detour in Clewiston (someone spray painted ‘LOST’ on the pavement to show how to get around some very stupid fencing), the journey was a pleasant one. This section is paved. The most important thing to note is that this is the best way to see Lake ‘O’, because you are elevated 20-30 feet above the Lake as you traverse the top of the dike. Lake ‘O’ is not a conventional lake, with lots of tall vegetation and no shoreline. When you drive by car (or boat along the Rim Canal), you see nothing to speak of- just the dike and tall vegetation. With the elevation, you can see over that vegetation. I saw plenty of birds and probably a hundred alligators (safely down below the path!) This path does not get enough good press. The pavement was smooth and pleasant. Of course, you have zero chance for shade, so be prepared for that. I will be trying out all the paved sections first and then I’ll take my chances on the rest of it.

You can park at Veteran's Park. This trail is a nice 10 mile ride, however, I will say that it is definitely all sidewalk. If you are planning on riding your "road bike" ...don't !! If you do, you can ride in the road for part of it but the roads are very busy and then there is about 3 miles of the trail running along Hwy 27 which is very noisy & not enjoyable. Because of this, I took my bike with hybrid tires instead. No clip in pedals because there is too much stopping/starting. On Hwy 27, cars are wizzing past. Definitely no way to ride your road bike on roadway there. The sidewalks are at times, uneven and blocked with tree trimmings, etc....There are many driveways and cross streets to watch for. Pay close attention here for moving vehicles. I was able to follow the trail just fine around the lake but there are no markers to keep you on track. Just follow the lake. I made two rounds in about 1.5 hrs.

Chain of Lakes Trail

Too short. Too ugly. Too bad, it could be better if it connected to something else.

Auburndale TECO Trail

Connects to General James Van Fleet

July, 2017 by brianleesawyer

I rated this as a 4 only because it connects to the Van Fleet trail. It in itself is nothing special but the fact that it connects makes the total length 35 miles. So if you're ready for Straight flat ride of 70 miles that is nice with about 40% shade this is a great ride. Bring lots of water. The trail end has awful water and it's a long way back to the water supply. The trailhead here is also safer than the Van Fleet trailhead in Polk city.

Fort Fraser Trail

My Home Trail

July, 2017 by brianleesawyer

I ride this trail 3-5 times a wk. Starting at the north end: the N trailhead is next to a sheriffs office so it is a little safer. No RR or water there. 1 mile into ride there's acovered bridge. .5 Mi. to spur to a nature preserve (Circle B Bar) The spur is nice for wildlife. One can continue into the reserve with mt bike for terrain. I just ride the .5 spur and then back. After 2.5 miles total there is a trail head (highlands city). RR and water. Across street is Bike shop. The trail goes another 3 mi. to another spur. This one is 2 mi. Then 2 more mi. to Bartow, fl. To trail head Another covered bridge. After bridge is major highway with no easy way to cross and only 100 feet of trail on across hwy. I'd stop at bridge. Good ride. 3.5 stars!

Auburndale TECO Trail

Enjoyable trail

June, 2017 by jekrae

Flat, slightly scenic, quiet. Rode from Myrtle Park to Vanfleet trailhead and back. About 13 miles round trip. Enjoyable ride.
