Allegheny River Trail

Bring a GOOD light, prepare for some bumpy sections

June, 2024 by tmiller48111

This is a beautiful trail with stunning views of the river. It winds its way along the river with remote sections and sections with a few cottages and homes. I rode from the North end of the Kennerdel tunnel, south to the south end of the Rockland Tunnel. I camped in Kennerdell on the opposite side of the river and attempted to access the trail through the North Tunnel Road in Kennerdell. It is marked private. The South Tunnel road has a short trail at the end that will come out at the southern end of the Kennerdell Tunnel. Bring a GOOD bike light. I have a light I use for night riding that is uber bright. There are doglegs in both the Kennerdell and Rockland tunnels at the southern end. Traveling North the South the tunnels are pitch black. The trail does have reflectors on it but the tunnel soaked up most of the light from my light making it that the only things I could see were the reflectors and the occasional bit of graffiti on the walls. A bit disconcerting to be sure. Going from the South to north as soon as you round the bend of the short dogleg the other end of the tunnel becomes visible and the ride is much easier. The interior of the tunnels are 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the outside air so be prepared for that also The other note on this trail is that roots have begun to push up the pavement in spots. There were some 100 yard long sections that were pretty teeth jaring. I don’t know why trails like this are paved when trails done with crushed stone are much more durable.

Conotton Creek Trail

One of the best trails

June, 2024 by khswy7bn2p

Yesterday was a beautiful day for a ride and the Conotton Trail was incredibly well maintained. We started at the Bowerston entrance and went the full length into Jewett, and back again. The trail was smooth, well maintained, with 5 quaint covered bridges, flower boxes along the way, plenty of resting spots if needed, lots of wildlife (bunnies, squirrels, chipmunks, deer, a large variety of birds). A pit stop at the ice cream shop in Scio for a cone was a sweet treat. If you watch the trees at the beginning of the trail, there are some miniature decorated bird houses in the trees. Great ride!

Montour Trail

Great scenic trail!

May, 2024 by behe.amanda_tl

Loved the Montour trail. Easy parking at Tandem Connections. Rode a bit in both directions to see both the National and Greer tunnels. Scenery is great, with a private golf course within view. Trail is well taken care of and provides nice shade along the way. National tunnel felt amazing on a hot day, like a natural air conditioner!

Great Allegheny Passage

Definite Bucket List Ride

May, 2024 by d_morris

One of the top 10 bucket list rides in the US, easily. And when combined with another, the C&O Canal, you can cycle on dedicated bike paths for 330 miles from DC to Pittsburgh. The 150 miles of the GAP ribbons through pristine forest, past former railway towns being resurrected by all the cycling tourists using the trail.

Wheeling Heritage Trails

"Go before you leave!"

May, 2024 by jreckart

I rode the Ohio River Trail from South Wheeling to Wellsburg Sunday, May 12 - about 20 miles each way - and enjoyed its varied views of Wheeling and surrounding area. Might have earned five stars, except for few deficiencies. (1) Just two restroom facilities along the entire trail. Just. Two. Potties. (2) Asphalt generally okay - some minor root damage. Also a nasty short stretch of Rt. 2 berm-riding north of town. (3) Trailside "areas of interest" signage deteriorated and nearly illegible. Also, few mile markers and no point-to-point distance signage. (4) Trail runs adjacent to several historic Wheeling neighborhoods - but if you didn't know they were there, you'd ride right past. Pretty good trail - needs maintenance and some TLC.

Moraine State Park Bike Trail

Spring Ride

May, 2024 by vicki1960

Usually hit this trail a few times a year. It's 7.5 ish miles in length, paved and follows the North Shore along Lake Arthur. There are many small hills and numerous turns. By all means this trail is far from straight! Trail starts at the bike rental (seasonal) and ends at Davis Marina where there is a beautiful view of the lake. Yellow line up the center of the trail has been recently painted. This park also offers boating, fishing, a beach, picnic areas, hiking (North Country Trail) disc golf and cabin rentals. Visit Moraine State Park website for more information.

Unless you enjoy open trail along mostly highways & backyards I'd choose another trail. Only bonus to this trail is that it's paved. Definitely not scenic, bring lots of water on a hot day & lots of sunscreen as it's mostly sunny.
