Fred Meijer Heartland Trail

Best part of the trail was Alma MI

July, 2020 by cpa2

We started the trail in Edmore where we found the parking lot and washroom facilities in excellent condition. The trip to Alma took us about three hours including a wonderful stop in Riverdale at the Riverdale Tavern that dates back to 1917! Great clean tavern with with very friendly service. We stopped there on our trip back as well. Yes the trail could use a little maintenance, but we are from IL where almost all the trails are in need of that. We found the trail's condition better than most. We traveled on a Monday and Tuesday so the traffic was very light. The best part was Alma. We stayed at Saravilla Bed and Breakfast. I highly recommend it for it's history, perfect location and bike friendly Innkeeper. We had diner at the Alma Brewing Company and it was superb. At 72 years of age I like to take our bike trips in two bites and it's rare to find such a welcoming town where we can stay for the turnaround.

In need of maintenance

July, 2020 by ljwerner

Rode from the small trail-side parking on S. Lake Road in Greenville to the picnic pavilion in Edmore on July 20, 2020. The trail is in need of a little TLC. There were large cracks in the asphalt that grass/weeds has begun to grow and this stretched nearly all the way to Sidney. Then there were several deep potholes along the edges that weren't marked. A hazard for any biker. The whole trail is in dire need of a good sweeping. The weeds / brush / trees in various areas have begun to overhang and obstruct the path. It's normally a lovely trail to ride. But will not be riding this section again until some cleanup has occurred. It's probably a Covid-19 thing. Sad.

Check out Alabaster

June, 2020 by lorimilroy4

Part of this trail runs along US 23, which is boring, but the trail goes closer to the water by Alabaster (search the history of the gypsum mine). We parked in Tawas, rode north to the lighthouse, came back and had lunch, then drove to Alabaster Road and rode the trail there.

Hope You Like Farmland.

May, 2020 by nswitzer83

This trail nice and flat, easy ride, away from everything. But, the scenery is quite boring. All you see is farmland. Not bad for a last minute ride.

Nice and Shady

May, 2020 by nswitzer83

This trail is beautiful. Very flat for a nice ride. Shaded by many trees. Multiple areas of different scenery, so you don’t get bored.

Saginaw County to Bay County Connector

Nice trail through marshland and farmland

May, 2020 by carolraz2000

We started the trail from the south end, which was tricky to find if you don’t know what you are looking for. There is no official parking for the trail. We parked by the cement factory. There was a very small, dirt path, maybe 60 yards, that we walked our bikes until we found an asphalt path. It looked fairly new, but the first almost half mile had weeds growing through the it. After that, it was well maintained. We saw and heard lots of birds. The path took us up to Bay City where we rode the River Walk then came back to the path. There was some parking by Hotchkiss Road, about halfway up the trail. Although there were some people on the trail, bicycling and in line skating, the trail was not too crowded.

Pandemic Ride

May, 2020 by chipper53

I've been touting this as my favorite mid-Michigan trail for a long time. Had a beautiful day riding west from Alma on a Thursday in late May. Lots of activity and friendly bikers, which was comforting during this quarantine. Trail surface was smooth and seemed to survive the winter well.

Fantastic Trail

May, 2020 by katzstudios19

Biked from Greenville to Alma one way. It was a nice and rather scenic ride, taking only about four hours (averaged 10.5 mph). The trail was in great shape, and there were hardly any bumps or holes. I would gladly do this trail again in the future!

Great views!

April, 2020 by mcgiverncourtney

Wonderful ride today. I went a little off course so not only did I do the route, I managed to get in 26 miles. Lots of scenery, different kinds of turns and twists. Great overall. Nice paved sidewalks for most of the time.
