Pine Island's unique position in the Gulf of Mexico draws a lot of bicyclists and day-trippers during high season (December-May). Though the main north-south path has plenty of negatives, it's still the best way to reach the more interesting parts of the island, to see SWFL's last remnant of 'Old Florida'. I ride the path on an old steel StumpJumper with good wide tires, which are recommended on Pine Island due to the many bumps and potholes everywhere. Lee County maintenance of the path is minimal, though a project is underway to repair parts of the path's southern section towards St James City (which is not a city at all, but a good place for canal restaurants and bars). The north end of the island, Pineland and Bokeelia, are by far the most interesting places to ride, and you should not hesitate to try one of the many small roads that lead away from the main path. Head west-NW towards the Calusa Mounds for example, or Pineland Marina. Bring water! Th
It opened recently. Its a great trail to walk or ride. Some areas have a lot of people. Then from Fisherman's Village you can follow a trail thru Punta Gorda.
Trails runs from Rattlesnake Hammock Rd at the south end to Radio Rd at the north end. Residential neighborhood backyards on either side. There is no shade, no bathrooms, and no water. Closest parking is the rear parking lot of the church on Rattlesnake. There is no parking at the Radio Rd entrance. Trail crosses Davis Blvd but there is a button activated light that stops traffic in both directions. Trail is good for walking, jogging, rollerblading, and biking. jogging, rollerblading, biking
Doesn’t show all bike trails. In fact missing quite a few.
About 2 of the 6 miles are decent for inline skating. The rest is tolerable, but it's in need of resurfacing.
It’s worth the fee for crossing over the causeway! There are parts that wind through the subdivisions and parts that ride along a very busy road- but riding safely on the trail. We’ll definitely return for another ride! Several public accesses to beaches. It’s a beautiful island!
Nicely paved, several street crossings. There and back 16+ miles. Great ride!
Great trail, tremendous trail, believe me! You can ask anyone, the trail is one of the best! I’ve been on many trails, this one is tremendous.
Parking, water, and restrooms are available at the South Trailhead at 14608 Ben C Pratt Six Mile Cypress Parkway (the trailhead is shown on the map but parking, etc, are not indicated). On the Apple Maps app, put in “Daniel’s Buckingham Trail” to see the location of the Daniel’s Parkway dirt parking area. To cross Daniel’s Parkway go west to the first traffic light and use the crosswalk.
This trail is just past the West trail down the dirt road. Nice parking area, but we wrote our bikes all the way from the park entrance. 15.5 miles out and back. Rode down to the Fakahatchee Hilton! Sat on the dock and looked at all the gators swimming happily in their pond. Beautiful swamp area! We were in the middle of the drought so the trail was muddy and a few spots, but mainly dry. Met an experience hiker that said the west Trail was really lush and beautiful, but we ran out of time!
Started our ride at the north end trailhead and rode south to the causeway. Nice surface, straight, mostly flat trail. Great views of the canals and waterways. 16 miles, great ride.
