Pine Creek Rail Trail

Wonderful views and wildlife

June, 2019 by mstempka

I rode the "lower" portion of the Pine Creek Trail in mid-June 2019. I rode from Jersey Shore to Waterville and back, approximately 25 miles round trip.

In addition to parking at the Jersey Shore trailhead lot off of Railroad Street, there is parking in town in the YMCA parking lot where the trail ends.

I recommend beginning your ride in Jersey Shore, as you'll go mostly up hill to start into Waterville.

There are a number of wonderful old railroad bridges you'll cross making your way to Waterville. The mountain views are spectacular along this section, as are the views of the creek below. Expect to see a number of people kayaking and making their way down the creek.

One thing to note, do pay attention to wildlife. I did spot a large black snake sprawled across the trail and a black bear in the distance in the area of the comfort station just south of Waterville.

Overall, this trail is great and worth the drive to Jersey Shore for a ride.

Houtzdale Line Trail

Parking in Houtzdale

June, 2019 by djmiller9975

The trail is nice from Houtzdale west. We only road to mile marker 9. There are sections of the trail that are all grass, so you'll probably want a mountain bike. The trail east of Houtzdale is all grass and muddy in spots, so be prepared. The Bilo market is no longer in Houtzdale; it appears to be replaced by a Family Dollar. There's a large parking lot, so you can park there and take one of the streets about a block north to find the trail.

Pine Creek Rail Trail

A fantastic resource

June, 2019 by craigs24

It's a beautiful ride through one of the most scenic areas in the Northeast. The State of Pennsylvania deserves a medal for its work building and maintaining this trail. For all of its 62 miles the trail is consistent, very rideable and well maintained. Campgrounds and access areas along the trail are similarly immaculate - they have a strict carry-in, carry-out policy. There are also several villages along the way and general stores where food and water is available.

Buffalo Valley Rail Trail

Wonderful time experiencing farm land and rural area on a beautiful day

June, 2019 by keeperbordner

My husband and I enjoyed the beautiful weather and rural landscape. Passed many friendly people along the way. Bathroom facilities at each end of the 9 mile Trail. Shaded by tree lined trail broken up with sunny open field areas along the way. Great places for a snack/meal either in Mifflinburg or Lewisburg. Also an Amish "serve yourself" stand midway to pick up some lemonade or a whoopie pie. A country treat.
We are very fortunate to have this great local RTT.
I did not give a 5 star rating because the restroom facilities in Lewisburg were in poor condition and the facilities in Mifflinburg were locked but replaced with a "port-a-potty".

Bald Eagle Valley Trail

Nice and easy ride.

May, 2019 by etown4sale

Rode this trail yesterday. Very nice and well maintained trail. Mountain, river and farmland views. As of now it is 2 segments for a total of 5.5 miles. Will be a great trail once all segments are completed and connects with the Pine Creek Trail.

West Creek Recreational Trail

May, 2019 by tim.coleman.52

We started in St Mary's. We hadn't got on our bikes yet when 3 motorized vehicles came by. Farther east another 3 four wheelers came by. We noticed that these motorized vehicles were leaving evidence from spinning there's tires and sliding on t the first thee miles. After that as we proceeded east that evidence vanished. Nice trail but should not be used for motorized unless someone wantsto maintain the damage done.

Great view of Pine Creek and the mountains. Rode this trail in the summer and in the fall. This is a must do trail for anyone who loves nature.

Buffalo Valley Rail Trail

Awesome little trail

January, 2019 by mcfdtony

I wish the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail were much longer. Being it's only an 18-mile round trip ride, it's hard to justify driving over 90 minutes to get here. That said, I do ride this trail at least twice a year. The BVRT is a flat, smooth compact gravel trail with an equal portions of shade and open riding, good for all riders, all styles of bikes. In Mifflinburg, you've got the Rusty Rail Brewing Company & Restaurant at the end of the trail. I recommend making a reservation and head over to the brewery for a bite to eat and a cold refreshment after the ride.

Pine Creek Rail Trail

2nd best Rail Trail in PA

January, 2019 by mcfdtony

Only surpassed by the GAP trail, Pine Creek is the 2nd best rail trails in PA (IMHO). I've ridden it numerous times. It's smooth, compact gravel makes it enjoyable for all bike types, all riders. This 63 mile trail is best described by dividing it into 2 sections. North of Slate Run and Sorth of Slate Run. Starting at the northern-most end, it's about 25 miles to teh village of Blackwell. This section is mostly open with plenty of scenery. Be sure to bring extra water as there are no places to stop to refill until and limited restrooms along this section. From Blackwell, south you'll begin to ride through small villages that offer opportunities for food and water. Cedar Run is 5 miles away and offers a general store and a small hotel/B&B, another 5 - 5 1/2 miles and your at Slate Run, with another general store for food and refreshments along with a hotel/B&B/Restaurant. From Slate Run, it's about another 26 miles to the end of the trail in Jersey Shore. This section is mostly shaded with numerous restrooms along the way and another spot for food and water.
From the trail head at the north, it's about a 4 1/2 mile bike ride along the road into Wellsboro and construction has begun to extend the trail into town - I'm not sure when completion is expected.
Wellsboro offers additional lodging and food.. highly recommended to stay in Wellsboro.

West Creek Recreational Trail

west creek in October

October, 2018 by cindy.gerner.5

We rode the trail in 2 sections. We started in Emporium and rode to the route 120 crossing. It’s uphill going west but barely noticeable. Even though it parallels route 120 we saw an eagle, turkeys, and a coyote which ran out in front of us and ran up the trail a stretch. The trail is in excellent condition. The following day we rode the second half to St Mary’s. This was a very enjoyable section. It passes through state game lands. We had to walk around a tree across the trail too. There were some busy beavers that dropped trees at that section. I recommend this to everyone. It’s beautiful and everyone who helps maintain this gem needs to be applauded

Lowlands Trail

too wet to ride the west creek

October, 2018 by cindy.gerner.5

I found this trail and since it was a wet Monday we gave it a try. We started at the lot by the dam. The trail consists of the park road that leads to the gravel trail. We started out on a steep uphill climb. I’m not in the best shape but managed to pull myself up the hill. The ride downhill was worth it. The trail passes through a picnic area and the gravel portion through marsh. We saw turkeys . There is an elk viewing pavilion at the end of the trail. On the way back the hill is long but not too steep. We got back to the parking lot I decided to ride down the dirt road about a quarter mile and glad I did. I chased out an immature bald eagle

Susquehanna Bikeway

Nice extended ride

August, 2018 by catlady9876

We rode this as an extension of the Susquehanna Riverwalk. It was paved and had a park with a restroom but no water fountain. For part of the ride, you are in a bike lane on the road but the road appears to be a dead end, so not much traffic. Once you get to Montoursville and the bridge, there is crossroads with no clear signage as to where the bike path should be. We took a right and biked to a boat launch behind the airport which was nice. I think we were supposed to cross the main road at the intersection where the bike path continued a little further - something for next time!
