this is a great beginner trail, but be warned that it gets very crowded on weekends with many pedestrians so it’s more of a cruising trail than a speed trail. there are some places where you need to cross the street and as a result, must be able to maneuver through tight switchbacks with fencing, so if you are clumsy with clip ins like me, you will probably fall unless you jump off or focus really hard. The trails starts/ ends in downtown LG which is always a plus. You can definitely make a day out of it.
We did this trail in Sept 2025. The completed portion of the trail is not very long and goes through the city of Santa Cruz. From the start and end points you have easy access to the Santa Cruz Beach Board Walk, and Natural Bridges State Park.
This trail needs significant repair near Lightfighter entrance to 1 South. Some work done in last week or so but very inadequate. Also, trail ends at Del Monte, near dump. There is no safe trail from there to Castroville. If so, must be hidden.
We are new to biking and still finding our way. We started at the Livermore end and don’t recommend it. There is a lot of Urban riding on streets and lights to cross, we had to turn around a few times as the trail seemed a bit disjointed. So…. Start in San Ramon. We went on a Saturday morning about 8:30. The bushes are trimmed back to allow for bike riding. People were nice a courteous. I didn’t see any urban living that would have made me feel unsafe. We will definitely try this one again, but start farther north. Once we hit San Ramon, everything was great! We stopped at a Starbucks, had breakfast and used the bathroom.
Mi lugar preferido por el momento! Si quieres correr unas cinco millas es perfecto, me encanta la sombra que dan los árboles !!!
The Coyote Creek trail is great! It wanders thru fields in the valley with the hills in the near distance. The wild flowers are beautiful. This section of the trail is near Morgan Hill.
Started from Danny Lopez Park and rode north. Lots of bikers but all polite. Quite pretty and rural as opposed to riding south. Nice paved trail. We stopped to watch several remote controlled planes--very fun!
My husband and I ride this trail 2 or 3 times per week year round. We park at the visitor center in Morgan Hill and ride up to Hellyer Lake and back. It’s beautiful year round and full of courteous bikers and walkers. We have recumbent trikes and are in our late 60s. We feel safe on the entire round trip. We have spotted deer and wild turkeys and bunnies and turtles and right now (March 2025) the wild flowers are putting on a show! Highly recommend this beautiful trail!
This was a very nice ride, beautiful green hills and lots of birds. Western end has trails. that continue into coyote Hills regional Park, a very nice bonus. trail waswell-maintained. It can be very, very windy.
Road is closed to vehicle traffic on weekends. Great road condition and amazing view of ocean beach.
