We wanted to try a new trail and this was the closest trail with a distance worth driving for. The trail is in stellar shape, well maintained with paved sections at both ends...crushed gravel over the majority. As it’s coming in and out of two towns, lots of crossings, safely identified and set up...just know that. Beautiful Farmland here!! We started and ended in the Madisonburg end as we then went to Rusty Rail afterwards, which you can either walk to from that terminus or drive over to.

Capital Area Greenbelt

Integrated with civilization and segmented

Ever since we found out my trunk bike carrier works on our SUV late this summer, we've fervently explored biking trails around the Harrisburg area before the season's over.  One of the first things that came to mind would of course be the Capital Area Greenbelt.  It's a 23 mile route interconnecting paved paths, crushed-stone trails, and public roads.  We've only explored 3 different segments of the Greenbelt.  

The first is City Island and Riverfront Park. Start by looping around the small island which is less than a mile but think of it as a warm up. You also get to see some touristy highlights such as the Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat, Water Golf, and City Island Railroad.  Then cross the picturesque Walnut Street Bridge, turn left on to my favorite segment so far, the Riverfront Park. This paved segment runs for 3 miles alongside the Susquehanna River all the way to Vaughn St.  Along the way you get to see many sculptures and historic landmarks. Some highlights include State Street, Governor's Mansion, Peace Garden, and Sunken Garden. And if you're open to excursions, take detours and check out the Capitol Complex and Italian Lake.

The second segment we've been frequenting without realizing it's part of the Greenbelt - Wildwood Park. I've had a 5-star review on it. It's one of  my favorite parks in the Harrisburg area.  I've read that there's a new 1.5 mile segment connecting from Wildwood Park to Fort Hunter.  I can't wait to check that out!

The third segment we just tried today, the Andrea Ave Spur.  It's not part of the main loop but still part of the Greenbelt. I guess you can think of it as an extension, much like the Fort Hunter segment.  This one starts out on a crushed-stone path but soon turns into a fully paved trail. It's only 2.3 miles to the main loop near the Farm Show complex, but it's hilly and punishing at times.

This is a different experience than, say, a rail trail which is more secluded and allows you to be soaked with nature.  Here you do not completely leave civilization. Another negative aspect is that many sections insolve public roads.  I'm not sure I should venture the southeast portion of the Greenbelt, based on the map...

Great ride

About one quarter of the trail is paved, the rest is packed gravel. There is a great rest area about halfway and a small refreshment stand by a local farmer not far away. Can be crowded close to Lewisburg as it was today around lunch time. Many road and driveway crossings, so be careful. Plenty of parking at both ends of the trail. One of our favorite trails!

The information ¿ stands for history, etc are great for learning. I’d like to see signs advising walkers to stay to the left & cyclists on the right. I’m concerned that walkers are blind to movement behind them. Rail-Trail surface is smooth & well maintained. Thank you ¿¿¿¿ for this treasure of history Re-purposed!

Nice, “effective” bike trail

First I was torn welcher her to give this trail a 3 or a 4. This is a really great trail to hook up Montoursville to the trails of Williamsport and for the most part, keep you away from car traffic. There are some scenic sections, for instance from Indian Park, along side and crossing over Loyalsock Creek. However to me it really stands out as a great commuter trail to get you into the more scene in portions along the West Branch of the Susquehanna. As it runs along some of the busier highways, again keeping you separate from traffic, it has a lot of traffic noise. Once it crosses the Creek and follows a bike lane (unprotected) along Old Montoursville Road, near the Motel 6, the bike lane is drawn on the left side so it appears bike traffic in both directions is to be on the one side. Then in front of “Club Fred”, there is a dangerous crossing of the lane to the right side...it’s right as the Canfield Lane curves up from the plant below it. My recommendation...once you pass the Litho business near Motel 6, stay on the righthand side. Once you hit Greevey Road things quiet down a bit and defined bike lanes are on eithe side of the road. This portion is where it gets scenic passing farm fields before hitting Riverfront Park. It’s an easy to follow, well marked trail. I gave it a 3 vs a 4 as it lacks what most bike/rail-trails offer with a bit more scenery and quiet. I do recommend this as part of the connecting rail trails.

Great ride, but confusing at Lewisburg end

We followed the app’s suggestion to park the car at Hufnagle Park in Lewisburg, but didn’t realize that shortly after its beginning adjacent to the Park, the trail has a gap in Lewisburg, requiring riders to find their way through borough streets (and across a 4-lane highway) to find where the trail picks up again several blocks away. Much better to park at the lot near 15th street.

my "go to trail", mile by mile review

The LVRT along with the Conawago trail make a great day trip ride of around 50 miles. I ride all or at least part of the trail almost every week if the weather permits. So here is my mile by mile assessment of the trail condition as of August 20, 2020. Starting at mile marker (MM) 0 the trail surface is in very good condition until almost MM 5 where some storm damage was repaired with much larger stone than the rest of the trail. The surface continues to be in mostly good condition until just after MM 6 (near where the trail to Mount Gretna turns off) from here to Butler Road the trail is in fair condition at best. There are spots with deep sand followed by rocky areas. After crossing Butler Road (near MM 7) the trail has two distinct sides, the much smoother northbound side and the quite bumpy southbound side. Riders heading north may notice oncoming riders trying to stay in the smoother lane as long as possible. This condition continues until a paved section that begins just before a bridge crossing over Mine Road. The trail is in very good condition again until just past MM 10 and before crossing PA 419 at Cornwall where tree roots under the asphalt have created many hard bumps across the trail. From PA 419 to US 422 (Benjamin Franklin Highway) the trail is mostly in very good condition. The transition from paved trail to concrete bridge over Wilhelm Avenue is a but jarring. I hope this info helps someone, this is a great trail that just needs a little more TLC.

scenic but rough ride at places

I wrote over 4 years ago that repairs made to this trail needed to be repaired as they were very rough to ride over. No additional work was ever done on those areas but the worst of the larger stones have been worn to the sides slightly by bikes over the years. The bridges near the E-Town end of the trail have very hard transitions from stone trail to concrete bridge, and they are not getting better with time. On the plus side there are now portable toilets at the Old Trolley Line Park (between mile markers 2.5 and 3). Didn't see many people wearing face masks and there are lots of people that don't seem to understand the idea of social distancing while on the trail.

Nice Trail for a Quick Ride

We ride this trail at least a dozen times each year. It is a nice, well maintained trail. About a mile of the east end and a mile and three quarters of the west end are paved with the remainder being small crushed stone. The trail pretty much runs east and west and there are two or three slight inclines along the way. In general the trail decreases in elevation from west to east so we usually start our ride at the east end.
Pros:
Well maintained
Fast. Other than totally paved trails, this is probably the fastest trail that we ride.
Scenery. There are some really nice views looking north from the trail.
Farm fresh air.
An now, refreshment at both ends. If you ride the length of the trail, you'll see what we mean.
Cons:
Numerous road crossings.
Definitely the dustiest trail that we ride. Not in your face dust...more so on your bike dust.
Wind. It always seems to blow (in our faces) on this trail...no matter which direction we ride.
Farm fresh air. Yes, this is also on the "Pros" list. Ride this trail often enough and you'll know what we mean.

All previous reviews are spot on, what they don’t mention is that cars are allowed to drive on the trail and they don’t follow the 10 mile speed limit
