It’s definitely a 5, but the mile marker is only up to 23. I enjoyed it very much. Especially viewing the mountains and going through them.

We started out with wonderful lunch at Bedford Springs hotel.Then we rode into town on the trail. The scenery is beautiful. But the trail was not crushed stone but a rough gravel.

Not good for hybrid bikes

Unlike most rail to trail bike paths, that have a finely crushed packed Stone, this trail has the very large sharp gravel stones. It is a rough ride unless you have a mountain bike. Beautiful scenery in beautiful Bedford PA but unfortunately the trail is not the best bike trail for hybrid or Smooth tire bikes.

A definite on your bucket list! We rode the GAP/C&O from Pittsburgh to Georgetown. If you aren't a camper, the C&O requires thought and planning on where to stay. Riding both gives you a great perspective on different trails. When on the C&O, make sure you jump over to the Western Maryland Rail Trail for 22 miles, beautiful trail and a nice break from ruts and sticks (and turtles). Rode in late July, not many puddles.

great trail needs maintenance badly in areas

Rode the entire length a couple of times. Last time in June 2019. The first 10 miles out of Cumberland are terrible. If it has rained recently you will get muddy. When we went through it looked like they hadn't even mowed sections of it in a year. After that the trail had some rough patches but was ride-able. I would definitely not ride a rode bike on this trail, especially not with road tires. You need a bike with some suspension and some grip through this area. The Paw Paw tunnel was open when we went through, very interesting. Very rough and narrow inside the tunnel.
Don't know what you do if you meet a bicyclist coming the opposite direction inside the tunnel. Between Harper's Ferry and Brunswick they have resurfaced the trail and it was great. They need to put a ramp on the bridge to Harper's Ferry. We skip it as we don't want to leave our bikes behind and we aren't carrying fully loaded bikes up the spiral staircase. Fort Fredrick is an interesting side trip. The only reason the trail gets as a high a rating as I gave it is that there are free campsites all along the trail and historical markers. A lot of the campsites are by the Potomac river. They are very rustic just a picnic table, fire ring and Porta John. Sometimes there is a working water pump, sometime there isn't. I would suggest carrying a water filter, the water from the pumps is usually orange with iodine. They are usually quiet except for the occasional train. Along this trail you really can't get away from the occasional train. Also, bring bug spray in the summer if you are camping. You really don't need sunscreen, very seldom are you out from under the trees. There are huge trees all along the path.

We rode the trail with camping gear and stayed at many of the free trail camping locations. I wish there were more of them especially near the southern end of the trail. There you have to pay for camping but it isn't much and the places are very nice. The trail is beautiful and shaded once you get south of McKeesport, North of that you go through a lot of urban and industrial area. It gets a little difficult to follow the trail through Pittsburgh near downtown. The area between Connelsville and Ohiopyle is probably the most scenic but I would suggest doing it early in the morning and on a weekday. It can get pretty busy on a weekend. The ride down the mountain into Cumberland is great if you are southbound. The ride up the mountain is strenuous if you are northbound. We have done it both ways. Cumberland has a great downtown area.

I would ride this trail again! My husband & I ride rail trails all around PA & as far as we can drive from our home in Philadelphia. This is one of the nicest trails. In addition to the wonderful history of 19th century mining, the trail is well maintained with clean & frequent bathrooms, benches & picnic shelters. Yes, there is a bit of a hill between Vintondale & Nanty Glo, but that is part of the fun. I want to give a thank you to Cambria & Indiana counties for their great work in maintaining this trail.

My wife and I rode the entire Lower Trail out and back on 11 June 2019, and had a wonderful time. We drove out from Camp Hill PA in the morning and stopped for an "MTO" sandwich at the Sheetz in Huntington PA, then parked at the Alfarata (north) end parking lot. It's a beautiful trail that has been on our bucket list for awhile. Saw some wildlife (snakes, turtles, etc), but lived to tell the tale. We highly recommend this trail!

Ghost Town Trail

Solid trail, but prepare for the hill

The Ghost Town Trail has grown and evolved over the years into one of the best trails in Pennsylvania. The key things riders should keep in mind for riding this trail is the mountain. I highly recommend heading west to east, up mountain first.

On Memorial Day 2019 I rode the newly opened portion of the trail, designated the C&I Extension, between Vintondale and the northern end of Nanty Glo. Parking in Vintondale and riding north and then east, the round-trip is just more than 30 miles.

I recommend parking in Vintondale and riding north to Route 422, going under the highway, following Vic Miller Road for a short distance and continuing the next eight miles back to toward Nanty-Glo along the trail. Most of the trail is a true railroad grade, so if you want to have a nice ride back to the end, definitely don't start at North Street and ride west and south.

The ride is quiet and serene. There isn't much to look at along the trail, you're in the woods along the first four miles, but the newly opened (as of 2018) portion from Vic Miller Road to North Street has some wide open areas. I would recommend this trip in the autumn, late September and early October is prime leaf season in this portion of the Laurel Highlands.

One note, there is limited parking at a trialhead along Vic Miller Road. At that trailhead, if you're using the "cycling" feature in Google Maps, it shows the trial continuing northwest. That is not the case, with no trespassing signs and a gate blocking the ATV path Google Maps is mistakenly showing as trail.

There are no services along the C&I spur, so pack and plan accordingly.

Overall, this portion of the Ghost Town Trail provides a quiet ride in the forest to escape to, but your legs will be sore the next day from the uphill portions.

WV Route 9 Bike Path

Good for some miles

I have ran this trail several times due to it being fairly close to home.
I have biked this trail too, but did not enjoy it as much as running it.
This is a very nice, paved, mile marked trail.
The first 4 miles or so do have a couple decent hills that are a challenge.
The other challenge are the amount of road crossings. The reason that the bike ride was less enjoyable. Hard to get a steady stride going.
And a warning, for both runners and bikers, the cars on the roads DO NOT STOP for you to cross.
I've made a point of stopping and checking for cars approaching.
This is the only negative aspect of this trail.
You may get to see some wildlife and I enjoy seeing the very large cargo plane flying overhead. Very cool.

So as always, if in the area and looking to get a couple miles in, give this trail a run.

Great trail for hiking, horseback riding, and biking

Not only is it beautiful, the people I’ve interacted with are courteous to each other. There is lots of shade making it ideal for very hot days. It’s very flat making it great for people of all ages and abilities.
