Border-to-Border Trail

Heavy foot traffic

September, 2020 by maestrojfk

This seems like a reasonably nice trail, but I ended up riding far less of it than I had originally planned. The foot traffic was so heavy, it lowered my typical average speed my about 2 mph. I felt like I couldn't get into any rhythm because I kept having to slow down. Also, the are long stretches of the trail that are in heavy shadows and the condition of the path is only fair, so it's hard to see potential danger spots. Probably fine for recreational rides on a mountain bike, but not for a training ride on a road bike... not that paths are the best places for any type of speed rides anyway.

A good ride!

September, 2020 by mg.hayden

I peddled the trail, Saturday the 12th, from Hamburg Township to Stockbridge and back. I chose this section of the trail because it offered a smooth asphalt surface as well as crushed lime stone and dirt. It offered a little bit of everything over this 20 mile section. There was a bike repair tool station as well as bathrooms along the way. A fun and scenic ride.

Falling Waters Trail

great for road biking; nice scenery

September, 2020 by brandmaa

We really enjoyed the beautiful scenery while riding this wide, flat trail. There is a great mix of sun and shade while riding past landscapes of farm fields, meadows, and lakes. A few areas have some tree roots pushing up and the pavement is cracked but it looks like it is being marked to be fixed. Can’t wait to do this trail again!!!

Baw Beese Trail

Terrible condition

September, 2020 by anewman5

I started in Jonesville. The trail was littered with trash, including car parts from the significant 4 lane road next to the trail. It was overgrown in parts and simply was in terrible shape. I got a flat at about mile out and walked back. I was confident that if I changed the tube that there was enough litter on the trail that riding would soon result in another flat.

Kalamazoo River Valley Trail

Nice Ride

September, 2020 by seeyajohn

I rode the KRV from D Avenue to Galesburg and back on a recumbent bike. The most interesting parts of the trail are at the two ends. The trail undulates through wooded areas in both cases, but the D Avenue end is very hilly. The trail is asphalt throughout and mostly smooth. There are several highway crossings that require care. The part of the trail near downtown Kalamazoo has one underpass that is best traversed on foot due to sandy dirt on the trail. This section likely is unpassable after a heavy rain.

As the trail heads east there is a section that runs through a park along the river. But then the trail emerges onto a course along route 96 and heads into Comstock. The short ride through Comstock calls for care with turning traffic going into businesses. East of Comstock is a nice brief ride through a park before again returning to route 96. The final section of the trail is a very nice ride through a park into Galesburg.

Kal-Haven Trail Sesquicentennial State Park

Outstanding if it were ashphalt

September, 2020 by seeyajohn

This would be a great trail if it were asphalt. As it is it is a nice ride with considerable shade. I rode the trail on my recumbent from the trailhead at Kalamazoo to the small community of Kendall. Since it is a rails-to-trails course, there are no major hills on the trail. However there is generally a slight grade favoring eastbound riders.

The crushed gravel surface is mostly smooth riding with only a couple of spots where the gravel is loose and one must be extra careful. The wooded ride was enjoyable and worth repeating. I hope to try the trail from the other end at South Haven soon.

Wabash Cannonball Trail

Nice 32 mile paved loop with only 5 miles on a low traffic road

September, 2020 by bikin-mike

Parked at Oak Openings on SR64. Rode East about 9.5 miles on North Fork. Took the connector trail to the Fallen Timbers Monument. Should have followed the sign that said “To Battlefield”. Missed it and had to turn left at mall entrance. Rode across SR24 bridge to the monument, then down a short paved hill trail and over to the Side Cut Metropark. Turned around and rode through the mall parking lot to a Subway in the back by the movie theaters. Found the unofficial shortcut just to the right of the theatres. Saved about a mile of riding back to the Connector Trail. Rode about 10 miles on the South Fork to Fulton-Lucas Rd. Rode about 5.5 miles North on the road. Very little traffic. A Friday night about 7PM and not a single car passed us. A right turn on the North Fork and about a mile back to the truck.

Now I know how the Cannonball got it’s name. Both trails were straight as an arrow. Nicely paved the whole way. Glad we rode it clockwise. South trail seemed to have more trees on the North side, so heading West at 7PM we had some nice shade.

I prefer a trail with some turns, but this was nice to do 32 miles with no backtracking. Thx for the nice trails.....Bikin-Mike - Aug 2020

Border-to-Border Trail

Border To Border

August, 2020 by markmcmorris

Bikers should get an early start! Heavy foot traffic due to runners and walkers enjoying the trail. Clean but overgrown foliage in areas causing the trail to narrow forcing walkers into the weeds when trying to pass on bikes. Very few if any restrooms along the path, outhouse style. A few new benches. A local lake side picnic area very busy and congested but clean. Parking best in the early morning!!

Nice Trail and Improving

August, 2020 by jimleea2

I live two miles from the trail and just recently rode the entire trail from new beginning in Whitmore Lake, MI the 34 miles (one way) to where it now ends west of Munith, MI. It is paved for about 12 miles until the west of Pinckney and then crushed stone remaining 22 or so. Horses frequent section between Pinckney and Gregory. The section from Gregory to Stockbridge is in my opinion the prettiest as tree covered. Many places to eat in Hamburg, Pinckney and Stockbridge. Watch for out of date maps/reviews as much work was done in 2019 and 2020. Eventually to connect further east and west and hoped to be full width of state.

We road the paved portion yesterday ~21.5miles total =out and back with our road bikes. I suggest that you park either at the commuter park and ride lot on 8mile road just before Lemon and jump on the trail end there, or start approx 2.5miles down the path at the trail head across the street from the Hamburg pub. Dinner and beverage at the pub on the deck after.
