Pere Marquette Rail-Trail

Needs some updates but still a beautiful ride

July, 2021 by schulzda74

The perfect distance for an enjoyable day ride with several areas to stop. Several miles have become rough pavement simply due to age. The dam destruction in Sanford didn’t help either.

Biked this section of the WP trail a couple days ago.
The section (.4 mile) of unpaved trail near Ashton, was being surveyed.
One of them said the culvert under the trail is due to be improved and the rest of the trail paved...in the near future.
Already some heavy equipment parked nearby.

Bay-Zil Rail Trail

Nice Views; Needs Maintenance

July, 2021 by jeffg8301

There is much that I like about this trail such as the beautiful views of wildlife along the river and wetlands, however it is in need of maintenance. As of July 2021 the trail still needs to be extended as it goes to “nowhere”; just dead ends to a narrow dirt path. There has been talk about extended the trail past this point but it has not happened yet. About 1/2 mile before the dead end the surface becomes very bumpy from roots and other plant life pushing up through the asphalt. There are many potholes that have been there for quite awhile. Many of them have been marked with bright paint as a warning but the paint is so faded that you don’t see them until it’s too late. If these things were taken care of this trail would be one of my favorite local rides.

Parking needed

July, 2021 by brian.geers1

The trail has so much potential. The surface between Saranac and Ionia is much better than Lowell to Saranac. Parking is really needed at the Lowell trailhead. I hope there are plans to keep improving the trail surface and parking. Thanks to all who have and are playing a part in making the trail a great Pure Michigan recreation opportunity.

Scenic Ride but very bumpy asphalt

June, 2021 by ejschreur62

I rode from Greenville to Edmore. Averaging 15mph on a road bike. The asphalt was too bumpy for me. There was a stretch nearing Edmore that was nice, but the majority had cracks every 25 ft making the ride teeth rattling and head/neck jarring.
Other than that, it was very scenic. I saw a deer, a mother possum with 3 babies following along, many chipmunks and birds. Hopefully they'll be able to resurface it soon.

My husband and I rode this June 23,2021. Started in Owosso-no trailhead here, had to park behind Budget Tire ! Rode almost to St Johns, trail is nicely packed limestone and is in good shape. I rode a road bike and did just fine! Very flat and shady in spots ! Enjoyed it !! 28 miles

Bay County Riverwalk/Railtrail System

mixed review

June, 2021 by jglinter

Rode from Bay City State Park, very pretty and well paved. Not so great into the city area—rough pavement, trail goes on sidewalks through neighborhoods and into industrial areas, poorly marked; existing arrows on pavement need repainting. Nice again along Saginaw River. Very glad for Trail Link when I lost my way.

Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Rail Trail

Great trail option for staying off roads!

May, 2021 by abandonedbrain

Previous reviewer had it pretty accurate for the Lowell to Belding stretch. Paved in the cities, leads to hard-pack (like crushed gravel/old asphalt but highly compressed) with some dirt mixed in. Mtb bikes, hybrids and gravel bikes will not have any problems here; I rode an average 15MPH from 4 Mile (Lowell side) up to north of Belding and back on a gravel bike, very few soft spots and they were marked for repair. And I'm a larger guy, but no worries about tires. Land around the trails was beautiful!

Saginaw Valley Rail Trail

Varied scenery on a well-maintained trail

May, 2021 by tomkephart17

Started at the trailhead in St. Charles, plenty of parking, single unisex pit toilet, water fountain, and bike repair station. The path heads north and immediately crosses the Bad River on a former train trestle, then proceeds for about 9.5 miles through alternating areas of trees and farmlands. There are a few gazebos with picnic tables along the trail if you want to stop, and restrooms are also available at about the mid-point trailhead at Van Wormer and Swan Creek Roads.

At Stroebel Road there's another trailhead, and from here the trail heads southeast as a suburban bike path. Per the TrailLink map, it ends at Center Road, but if you want a bit more mileage you can continue north along the west side of Center for about another mile to the intersection with Michigan, where the roadside trail ends. If you choose to take that last section, you'll also cross the Tittabawassee River.

The trail is very well-maintained asphalt all the way, with very few bumps or irregularities. The grade is very gentle the whole way, no significant hills or rises; a smooth, nice ride! As with most longer trails, the Saginaw Valley Rail-Trail is busier at each end, and I had the center section pretty much to myself on a Friday afternoon.

Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park

excellent!

May, 2021 by junkforwayne

I rode the entirety of the trail today - which at 93 miles was a plenty. The scenery is beautiful, plenty of black squirrels (don’t have those in my neck of the woods), rabbits, and best of all - peace and quiet. Plenty of amenities along the way and you end at the lake - which is beautiful!
