Nice trail. Many things to see riding along the water. A little confusing whew going thru Punxsutawney but there is signage.
We just got back from riding this trail. We had hybrid bikes and experienced no problems. The trail was well marked. The last 3 miles was all uphill so bring plenty of water. We rode onThursday and there was very little bike traffic. All in all a very nice trail well maintained and would recommend a visit.
Good afternoon ride. Slightly downhill from Grampian to Curwensville. Scenic views with creek, bridges and mountain laurel.
Trail is 21 miles in length and crushed limestone. Biked on a section of it, Spring 2026. The section I was on mostly through Farmlands. Parked at Bonniebrook. Saw the new painted mural at Marwood Road trailhead and parking.
Bike touring across tha US and I’m currently set in my hammock about 10 mils outside of frostbite head West! Gotta say that MD & PA has out done themselves on tha GAP! Wish other places “you kno who you are WV, yea you! Anyway, I love its backcountry vibe and tha fact that it’s well maintained! Hope tha rail to trail route gets done sooner rather than later and is maintained this well instead of corrupt politicians pocketing tha money! You kno who you are, you! Anyway, to tha hiker and biker trash out there, one love!
Highly recommend this beautiful and well kept trail. Beautiful to ride along the trees and over the 2 epic ohiopyle bridges.
04/04/2026.Great Savage Tunnel on the Great Allegheny Passage is open. Motion sensor lights to illuminate the tunnel. If you have bike lights, maybe use them inside the tunnel so other users can see your presence easier.
When Connellsville to Point Marion is completed, the Sheepskin Trail should be fantastic, but for now the pieces are nice but short and incomplete - just a few miles each. Fayette County should pick up the pace and finish building this trail before we're all too old to bike them!
There are also pieces near Dunbar and Uniontown, but the pieces I biked most recently were around Point Marion. From the WV-PA border there is trail 1.5 miles north along the Monongahela River to Point Marion - this segment has existed in some form for decades, but I think it got a nice surface only in 2018. The newer sections (opened in 2022?) parallel Cheat River and Nilan Rd. There is a 1.2 mile long section starting at the north end of the Route 119 bridge over the Cheat River, continuing eastward. Then a gap of several hundred feet at the little community of Hope Hollow. Then if you go up a slope from Nilan Rd you can get onto another segment of trail, 1 mile long, that continues eastward toward the little community of Lake Lynn, stopping just before the coke ovens. The surface of these trails is crushed limestone. A new trail bridge is planned for construction by 2027 in Hope Hollow: https://www.pa.gov/agencies/penndot/projects-near-you/district-12-projects/sheepskin-trail-nilan-bridge
We parked at the end of Astral road, though not a designated trailhead, there is a small parking lot for fisherman. This is approx 4.3 miles South of Franklin. A good bit of snow and ice still on the trail. Big ice chunks floating down the Allegheny (River). Sandy Creek jammed up with ice at the Belmar Bridge.
Tunnel is closed. I ventured over the top and it's tough
