Rode this trail on multiple rides over the Memorial Day weekend. Connected to it via the Milford trail and accessed it from two different directions to be able to complete the entire trail minus the closed section. Great views of lakes with bald eagles’ nests and white swans - along with folks fishing, riding paddle boats and enjoying the beach. Shared the trail with many bikers and walkers. Noted that many fast paced riders fail to give audible warnings when passing-which is dangerous! Great trail and look forward to riding it again in the future!!
It was easy to find while staying at Camp Dearborn over the holiday weekend in May. Path was well maintained with adequate warning of crossroads. Shaded in various areas for a great ride. Will look forward to riding it again!
It's a pretty decent trail with a great round trip.
While it has an excellent round trip if you the whole trail (including backtracking), the pavement is in rough shape with very few portions being smooth, you're alongside traffic for long segments, and some of it set in urban settings, you might want to choose a different trail altogether.
The only drinking fountain that I came across is by a baseball field by Brooks St. & Garfield Ave.
The Battle Creek linear park was very disappointing. Many parts of the trail have wide cracks across the width every 10 feet. If you do not have a flat tire bike this is very jarring. There are also no water or restroom stops on the entire length. And no directional signage or mile markers. There are several areas that are quite hilly. The only reason we gave it a two star instead of a one was there were a couple miles along the river that were smooth and very pleasant.
So the trail is smoother for the Saranac To Ionia portion than it is from Saranac to Lowell. Both are mostly gravel, but the gravel is better heading East from Saranac than west. I recommend parking at the Saranac boat launch and heading East to Ionia.
I love this trail but why is the bridge still closed? It was closed most of last year and it looks like nothing has been done (bridge is on east side of island lake entrance). This is a complete closure which prohibits anyone from taking a circular route.
Just had another close call at the Pontiac trail “crossing” This intersection needs to be a safety priority!!
Lovely area to walk your dog, or go to see pretty overlooks, wildlife and just submerse yourself in peaceful settings. Great place for photography as well. There’s one straight trail and many trails that loop around and off that main trail. It’s well maintained and groomed.
Gorgeous views of the river, wildlife and easy going trails, though some can be a little bit wet so bring some waterproof boots!
A new section has been completed that fills the former gap between Dexter-Huron Metropark to Delhi Metropark on the Huron River.
