Republic/Champion Grade Trail

Yet to Ride

March, 2024 by frmerry

Full disclosure, I haven't ridden this yet but plan to this summer. The reason for my review is that from Google Street and satellite view it appears there is a nice new paved path (so you can avoid riding on US 41) from Van Riper SP to Champion. This new trail (which just for fun I think they should name the Van Riper State Park/Greater Metropolitan Champion Intergalactic Intermodal Corridor because when typed out is nearly longer than the new trail itself) ends at Daliba Street which you can then take to where the R/CG trail begins behind the what now appears to be abandoned Mini-mart. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and 4 stars and update post ride. There also appears to be trailhead parking on the north of US 41 just to the west of the Van Riper SP entrance although for bathrooms and water you would have to go to the state park. Happy Trails.

Nice Addition

This is a very nice short trail running from the Detroit River out to the Train Station. In early 2024 the West Riverfront Park is under construction so entrance to this trail on the south end by the river is tricky to find, you enter from Jefferson Avenue. Nice to see the Detroit Riverwalk growing in length each year. One of the nicest river fronts in the country.

Wonderful ride

Wonderful ride! I only rode between Dalton and Ravenna, so perhaps the quality of the trail changes after Ravenna. But today, the trail was near perfect! Sure, there are stop signs every few miles---often crossing lightly travelled roads; and, yeah, there were some cracks or root heaves here and there. But honestly, neither of those issues were even issues. I'm a long-distance cyclist that just moved to Michigan. I can't wait to explore more of these wonderful trails and roads! Thank you!!

Grand Haven’s bike path is bad.

We ride this path a lot, and Grand Haven’s bike path is horrible. They did resurface part but need to fix the ENTIRE thing. Holland’s is ok definitely rideable. The scenery is great and to end up at the beach which is beautiful.

Nice paved path from Pettysville Road and M 36 marshaling area through Pinckney. The path turns to fine crushed stone near Anderson and was quite a chore to ride on due to wet, low light areas which had not dried out. Not great in this area for bikes on a leisurely ride. Nice dry, sunny day of 50 degrees. The path will probably not dry out here all winter.

Falling Waters Trail

Falling Waters Trail

If you like water, wildlife, serenity, and long, straight, flat trails enveloped by a canopy of trees, then this is the trail for you.

I started at the Concord trailhead, and as I made my way past the north branch of the Kalamazoo River, along the trail beneath the canopy of trees, and eventually to the causeway across Lime Lake before another canopy of trees to Jackson, I kept thinking to myself how great it must be to live nearby and to enjoy this trail year-round and its four seasons.

I experienced it on a brisk, early October morn and enjoyed the beginnings of fall color and the golden brown, leaf covered path. As a visitor from suburban southern California, I don't really get to enjoy that Autumn color back home.

I especially appreciated the clean air, picturesque scenery, solitude, modern whimsical sculptures near the Jackson trailhead, and the outgoing and friendly locals utilizing the trail.

The bike ride was only a twenty-two mile round trip, but it was certainly worth the journey for me from SoCal to enjoy this idyllic setting!

Great Trail

This trail starts at Whitmore Lake and goes all the way to Jackson prison. The trail is mostly crushed limestone which is smooth and flat. Nice scenery the whole way. The trail goes very close to the prison. You can even see the inmates exercising in the yard. It was like a movie set.

Nicely maintained trail with benches along the way. Lots of geocaches along this trail too.

This is my new favorite trail. Sparkling clear lakes appear on one or both sides of the trail with spots for sitting and enjoying the views. We saw several pairs of swans.

Great Trail

I decided to take my road bike for a trip from Cadillac down to Big Rapids where the trail is closed for paving and back to Cadillac. I agree with Cecelia's review from Sep, 23 in that the asphalt paving is old and bumpy between Reed City and Big Rapids. Also the trail was closed between Hibma Rd south to Cleveland Rd in Tustin. The detour is gravel roads that are loose sand and very difficult to navigate with 32mm or thinner tires!

With the exception of the portion of trail north of Reed City that runs along Hwy 131 the the scenery is awesome running through rivers, hills, valleys, farms and small towns.

I am wondering if there's anyone assigned to blow the trail clean from leaves, twigs and branches? There were quite a bit of that along the way. In comparison to the Macomb/Orchard trail for example which is very well maintained all year round it seemed a bit unkempt.

Overall it is an awesome trail that I hope is better maintained than what I experienced on my recent trip and look forward to returning next year when the whole trail will be paved.

Bridge to Bay Trail

ROUGH

October, 2023 by mwskibike

Rode from Marine City High School, north on the inland route to Yankee Road, north of St. Clair and then back south thru St. Clair and on the section that runs close to the river. This trail needs work! It is rough - lots of root bumps, bump at every road crossing and the weeds along Recor Road and King Road south of St. Clair cover half the trail. In one spot on the King Road section, I had no choice but to let the weeds rub on my legs - they are that far over the trail. Won't be back here until improvements are made.
