Flat Rock Pathway

Nice trail but needs work

October, 2019 by chaspenny

I have ridden this trail a couple of times a year for the past several years. It was a really good smooth trail but has received very little maintenance. The asphalt is becoming very rough because of tree roots and general wear. I ride a hybrid bike and it is getting to the condition that I will find other trails to ride until this is repaired. I am 70 years old and love biking but my body lets me know quickly when the path is bad.

103 Mile cyclocross.

October, 2019 by mvanvleck

I biked the entirety of the improved portion of this trail yesterday 10/9/19.
I started in Ovid, where there was parking by the trail but no public restrooms and headed west. As anticipated, the trail was improved and very nice until Smith Road just west of Owasso (about 7.5 miles). Past Smith Road, the trail was overgrown with grass 2-3 ft tall and trees growing across--impassable without a machete. I turned around there and rode all the way through Saranac, where the trail ended at mile marker 133. Past there, the trail had original railroad ballast with large stones, not passable even with a mountain bike. I then turned back and returned to my car in Ovid. The most beautiful part of the trail was West of Pewamo, as it was along the Grand River valley. East of Pewamo to Owasso, it is primarily farm land sheltered by a line of trees in most places. There is parking and restrooms along the trail in St. Johns, Fowler, Pewamo, Muir, Ionia and Saranac. The trail was beautifully, newly paved asphalt within all of the towns, and hard-packed crushed limestone in between. It was perfect for a cyclocross bike or mountain bike and most likely entirely passable with a road bike (some rare soft spots in the crushed stone could be difficult). I will definitely ride this again. 51.5 miles of improved trail total, for a round tip distance of 103 miles.

Great Trail-September 2019 Ride

October, 2019 by vicki1960

We parked at the Trailhead just South of Cadillac. Biked 2 miles into the city of Cadillac for lunch. There's also some great little shops in Cadillac.
Biked from Cadillac to LeRoy and back, approx 35 miles round trip.
Trail is very nicely paved asphalt through open areas and wooded areas.
Great ride on the Northern section of the trail.
Between Cadillac and LeRoy you will pass through Tustin which has a few small stores if you need anything.
Along the trail there are wooded sections of huge white pine trees.

Hills and Turns

October, 2019 by vicki1960

September, 2019 ride. We ventured out close to sunset. Accessed the trail out of Empire. Parking and restroom at the Empire Trail head, the beginning of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. We headed North.
Trail is asphalt paved in good condition and goes through a wooded area. Has many turns and not just grades, but actual hills. There are signs. These hills provides a great workout! If you just want to roll along, you're going to have to work at it.
We saw turkey and deer just before sunset.

We parked at Jackson's Landing trailhead. Large paved lot and portable restroom.
Trail is asphalt paved and plastic decking. The plastic decking sections are extensive and very rough and bouncy if traveling at a decent speed.
The trail goes along the Flat River. Coming out of Greenville the trail is more of a paved sidewalk, up near the High School.
Trail services include eateries nearby since most of this trail is within the city limits.
You can also access the Heartland Trail from Jackson's Landing trailhead.

October, 2019 by vicki1960

Only went a few miles and the surface was very bumpy for asphalt pavement. Cracks and bumps possibly from the harsh winters.

Falling Waters Trail

September ride-fast and flat trail

October, 2019 by vicki1960

Well maintained asphalt paved trail in very good condition provides for a fast and flat ride.
Parked at the Weatherwax Road Trailhead in Jackson and biked to Concord and back. Concord is just over 10 miles away.
Trail goes through wooded areas and open areas of farm fields. You will also pass by Lime Lake.
Mid point there is another trailhead and parking. The trail passes accross several back side roads, some of which are dirt.
People along the trail were friendly.
At the Jackson end of the trail, Falling Waters connects with Martin Luther King Equality Trail for an additional 4 miles of trail.
Services in Jackson include many places to eat a few miles off the trail.

Pere Marquette Rail-Trail

Thoughtful, Clean, & Beautiful

October, 2019 by fussman.karen

As I am still a beginning cyclist with this being only my 3rd trail, I have come to appreciate the signage and directions each trail posts to help you stay on the right path. We parked at the Chippewa Nature Center & rode into Midland where the Tridge begins. As we came up to town, even though there was a slight detour due to construction on M20, it was well labeled. We rode to Sanford and found some special treats along the way. Looking like a scene from "Bridges of Madison County", I loved the different bridges along the way. At the Veteran's Memorial if you look closely, draped around the boot statue are the dog tags with a solider's picture on it which was such a nice tribute. We stopped at The Cottage Creamery which is accessible from the trail or Saginaw Rd. and tried the Apple Crisp ice cream. We got another treat as we sat on the back deck when the cute little chipmunks playfully ran around waiting for me to drop my ice cream. It is a pretty straight trail, but there is a lot to appreciate on this trail, and it's very bike friendly. I would like to finish the trail and head to Clare from Sanford. Walking or riding, people passing by are very friendly, and if you take a few breaks, there's definitely some awesome photo opportunities. Great Job Pere Marquette!! We'll be back for sure.

Betsie Valley Trail

Frankfort to Beulah-September,2019

September, 2019 by vicki1960

Parked in the town of Frankfort. There is a trailhead and lot one block from town, near the Police Station.
Yes there is a less than quarter of a mile section of the trail closed at Betsie Lake but you can go around the closed section. It is clearly marked and orange cones are out. Or you can just park at the lot in Elberta, which is across the road from Betsie Lake.
We biked from Frankfort to just beyond Beulah towards Thompsonville and back. Trail goes through wooded areas and open areas and wetlands. Gorgeous scenery.
The first 6 miles are flat and fast asphalt paved. Beyond M-115 it turns to gravel. Then the trail goes along Crystal Lake, which is beautiful. So the scenery makes up for the bumpy gravel section.
Just before Beulah you will come to Railroad Crossing Nature Area. Take the new wooden steps up to the overlook for a stunning view of Crystal Lake. On a sunny say, it's so clear the water looks blue.
In Beulah there are several places to eat. We parked our bikes in front of the restaurant and went inside and no one bothered them.
Beulah is biker friendly, there are bike lanes on the streets.
Heading out of Beulah towards Thompsonville the trail is gravel and bumpy. We didn't venture too far that way.
Well marked trail and trailheads and friendly people.
When in Frankfort, the trail ends 1/4 mile from the beach so take the trek to the beach and Lighthouse. Enjoy a gorgeous sunset.
In Frankfort there are several eateries and we left our bikes in front and no one bothered them.
All in all, a great trail offers nice stops. From Frankfort to just beyond Beulah and back was a 25 mile round trip.

Paul Henry-Thornapple Trail

Shady and scenic

September, 2019 by joe maitner

Biked the trail from Middleville south on a cool clear weekday in late September. Trail was not crowded but a bit bumpy in a few spots. We also biked the new portion a mile long and it was beautiful. Nice restaurants in town near the trai.
