Early rail trail

May, 2021 by tim36r

This is one of the area’s earliest rail to trail conversion. It is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter. The age and winter use have taken a toll on the surface, especially at the bridges. Ride is straight and flat, mostly through open farm land. Nicest feature is bridge east of Ravens

Amazing.

I am uncertain how they get a trail this smooth! A very comfortable and pleasant ride - felt like it was majority downhill heading south. Connects to several trails and we ended at the beach on the Muskegon lake trail. Fantastic ride!

There is a small section that is damaged, but easy detouring is available and this small problem should not present any real reason to avoid the trail.

North Bank Trail

Connection to Spoonville is Complete

May, 2021 by tim36r

In the comments from July of 2020 someone was looking for the Spoonville trail.

They were just a little early, it was completed in the fall of 2020.

Well marked from the East end of the Northbank trail, Spoonville crosses I-96 on a protected lane on the 112th Ave bridge, then takes a scenic trip along a ravine and around a golf course.

Spoonville trail includes the mile long crossing of the Grand River on the M-231 bridge.

With the new trail completed in late 2020, North Bank and Spoonville are 12.5 miles from the mouth of Spring Lake to the south side of the river at M-231.

Spoonville Trail

New Trail Completed Summer 2020

May, 2021 by tim36r

The connection between the Spoonville Trail and North Bank trail is complete.

There is now continuous path from Conner Bayou county park to Grand Haven's Harbor Island.

There are 2 trail head parking lots on the Spoonville trail (just north and south of the M-231 bridge, plus there is another on the North bank trail.

We started south of the M-231 bridge. The bridge is a mile long with great views of the river and wetlands. Leaving the bridge you loop back and cross under M-231 and follow 120th ave to Leonard, passing the trail head lot on 120th.

Newly completed in 2020 the trail follows Leonard east for a short stretch and turns into Terra Verde golf club. Cross the club drive and follow around the edge of the course with golfers on one side and wetlands ravine on the other. This part of the trail is outstanding with rock retaining walls and several bridges.

Crossing the last bridge in the ravine you come up along I-96, and use a protected lane of the 112th ave bridge to cross.

Following the trail the Spoonville trail ends and the Northbank trail heads left around the fire station.

Cross back under I-96 along the westbound ramp form M-231 to I-96, and follow the North Bank Trail to downtown Spring Lake. Continue under M-104 along the water and the trail leads up on the M-104 bridge over the mouth of Spring Lake and then over the Grand river to Harbor Island on the bascule bridge.
South of M-231 to the mouth of Spring Lake is 12.5 miles. Plans are in progress to complete a couple of new miles on the the south side of the river to complete the loop downtown Grand Haven back to the M-231.

This is a great trail to ride with lots of variation. Hopefully that last couple of miles will be completed soon.

Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park

excellent!

May, 2021 by junkforwayne

I rode the entirety of the trail today - which at 93 miles was a plenty. The scenery is beautiful, plenty of black squirrels (don’t have those in my neck of the woods), rabbits, and best of all - peace and quiet. Plenty of amenities along the way and you end at the lake - which is beautiful!

Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Rail Trail

great trail for almost any bike

April, 2021 by dmays1

I have ridden this trail from Greenville to mile marker 94 it crosses several roads. it is mostly solid surface but there is loose gravel in places. There are benches every mile from Greenville to Belding if you need a break. from Belding to Lowell there are benches but they are around 3 miles apart. there are no real hills with only about 100ft of elevation change total. No place to camp as most of the land is private along the trail. The trail is owned by the state with maintenance provide by Ron Gunderson and the FMRVRT.org, He is on the trail daily his is the only vehicle you will likely see. He does a great job at maintaining the trail

East West Trail

I ride this trail often as it allows me to connect to the Paul Henry and the M6 trails making for a nice long ride. My only complaint is the bridges have quite a ridge at each end.

Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park

Grand Rapids to Rockford

April, 2021 by bklemz_tl

Rode from Riverside Park to Rockford and back. Beautiful trail! Plenty of varied scenery along the way to keep from getting bored. First five miles or so follows alongside the Grand River. Rockford has a perfect setting for refreshments (food, ice cream, beverages) along with a very nice riverside park. Trail was paved the entire way and in reasonable shape, just minor bumps. Definitely worth a repeat visit -- I'll try to go further next time.

Fred Meijer Flat River Valley Rail Trail

Flat River Gem

This trail is incredibly well maintained and could be ridden with a road bike however gravel tires are best.

Only one busy intersection at Lincoln Lake Road, most others are gravel roads with good sight lines making it safe to see approaching car traffic.

I sincerely hope this doesn't get paved as the gravel experience is unlike cement or asphalt AND it moves moisture away nicely...

Recently (late November 2020) the trail was swept and loose spots at several intersections were addressed making it literally the best gravel trail I've ridden yet..

Van Buren Trail State Park

New Trailhead and Paved Trail

There is now trailhead parking at the South Haven end of the trail. There is a parking lot on Aylworth Ave. between Kalamazoo St. and Monroe Blvd. The trail is also paved between that trailhead parking and Van Buren State Park.
