Wheeling Heritage Trails

new things on the trail

November, 2016 by mistypullen13

When you go north of the heritage port in Wheeling, the cracks have been paved, and where there was a go around, is now done and you don't have to go around anything trying to figure out how to get back. I wouldn't go past that point before it reopened(would go to the Local grocery before turning around) due to having extra wheels.

Brooke Pioneer Trail

Brooke/ Wheeling Heritage Trails

November, 2016 by christy17

Started at the Pike Island Locks and Dam. My son and I went north and turned around where the Brooke trail veers around the old Wheeling-Pitt property. The Wheeling side was in good shape (a lot of blown garbage from the nearby roadway). On the Brooke section, plenty of benches, rest stops, and one historical section which was interesting. Well marked, Brooke side had downed trees on path (small ones). Enjoyable day, not bad on bad knees.

Montour Trail

Beautiful

October, 2016 by brandonstevens77

Great place to run as opposed to the streets of West Mifflin. Started at the south east trail head, which has moved about 0.1 miles due to construction, and ran 2.5 miles out then back for a total of 5 miles. The trail was great and it felt like I was running downhill both ways.

Conotton Creek Trail

Very Nice Trail

October, 2016 by rpw5354

Rode the trail on my mountain bike October 16th 2016. A very picturesque ride. The trail from start to finish is asphalt. Mostly old asphalt with some sections of new asphalt but smooth enough for a mountain bike not so much for a road bike with high pressure tires! The trail was well maintained and completely flat. No weeds or debris. Numerous covered bridges. A few port-a-johns along the trail. The trail was too rough for in-line skating, in my opinion but otherwise a very enjoyable mountain bike ride. 11 miles one way.

Montour Trail

Hope the rest is better.

October, 2016 by jc_called

My wife and I started at the end of the trail. While the trail was nice the detours on the road was not what we expected. My wife is not comfortable on the road and we did not expect it. The detour around mile 36, I think, was not marked on the road and did not know where to go so we turned around and returned.

As I said earlier the trail was nice and enjoyed the scenery, just did not care for the road and detours because of trail construction. Later we will try the rest of the trail and hope to find more of the great parts of the trail.

Zoar Valley Trail

Nice Fall Ride.

October, 2016 by jtmfd2003

Just got back from riding the Zoar Valley Trail. Rode from Fort Lauren's to State Route 800. It was a beautiful ride that followed the river on one side and the canal and locks on the other It was a little narrow for my wife and I to ride side by side, but then it is a tow path and not a rails to trails bed. Though it hasn't rain in a while, it was fairly smooth and no ruts at all. If your looking for a 11 mile ride, I would recommend using the St. Rt. 800 trail head, ride the 5.5 miles to Bolivar and enjoy a sandwich at Sublime BBQ (check the hours) or ice cream at DQ or the little shop in the middle of the village and then return. Because of the canopy of trees, we are definitely going to return in a couple of weeks to catch the leaves!!!!

North Bend Rail Trail

Central Station Tunnel #6 2297 ft long

October, 2016 by tracy11

Today 10/11/16 traveled thirteen miles on Rt 50 from Ellenboro, WV toward Clarksburg, WV to Central Station Exit. Then went about two miles to Tunnel road on right. Went about half mile to trail entrance on right. From trail entrance to tunnel #6 was about three to four hundred yards. Trail was muddy in places due to recent rail. Inside tunnel was smooth. Lights are needed to go through the tunnel. The tunnel is straight and you can see light at the end. Tunnel road is now being used by fracking companies and there are flaggers to go through. It probably would be better to wait till they are done but I had driven for 45 min to get there and they were very helpful in letting me pass. Nice tunnel to see.

Deckers Creek Trail

October 2016 round trip starting down by the river in Morgantown

October, 2016 by river lizard

Started down by the river off of 19 in Morgantown. There's trail parking by the Jeep dealer. Take the Mon River Trail (which goes right by the parking) and head north (towards downtown Morgantown). You'll come to a circle drive area, to the right is the trail that goes under 119 bridge. First 3 miles is blacktop, after that it's all crushed stone. Once you start on the crushed stone you'll start on the climb of 2% grade pretty much until you get to 13 mile marker. From 13 mile marker to 18 is pretty much flat. Once you get to 18 the grade starts to increase and I'd say the last couple of miles the grade is at least 3% maybe even 4%.
No bathrooms at all, so if you can't get close to nature, then this trail is probably not for you. There really is only 2 other areas for parking and I wouldn't even know how to tell you where they're located at.
Scenic rating...1 to 5 I'm going to give it a 4 but be warned, there are spots that are just trees on either side. The creek/stream doesn't always run by the trail and sometimes it's 100 to 150 ft. below half-hidden by trees. Plenty of rock formations to see, which is a plus in my opinion. Plenty of benches but I don't think I saw a trash can anywhere along the trail.
Wildlife that I saw: 2 deer, 1 ground hog, 1 skunk, plenty of squirrels and a million chipmunks. None of which I could get a photo of. The wildlife was really spooked.
Would I do this trail again, definitely!!! Would like to try it mid-summer so I could swim in some of the waterholes that I saw along the way.
I rate this trail a 4 overall. This trail you should use 26 x 2 or 29 tires, it's probably not a road bike trail. Glad I took the time to pedal this trail it was well worth it.

Conotton Creek Trail

Nice Day in Ohio

October, 2016 by esterlepete

WE drove over an hour to get to the Bowerston Trailhead. It was worth it. Well maintained. We took the trail all the way to Jewett and back. Trail was great. Paved. Mostly flat. Scenery was varied and beautiful. Five covered bridges. Found wild hops growing along the trail. Stopped in Scio for lunch.
The only drawback was the PortoPots. They need more attention than what they're currently getting. All in all it was a nice day in ohio.

Deckers Creek Trail

Love this trail!

Another of my go-to trails, lovely walk through Mon County. At times flat and scenic, other times a gradual steepness, but you don't really notice it (unless on a bike).

Especially lovely along the water and can get a bit buggy at times. Friendly cats escort you along the way up near the Delslow entrance.

We really enjoy parts of this trail in the hottest days of summer, it is almost always cooler and in the shade in the Delslow to Masontown area.

Some sketchy parts in the city limits.

Cheat Lake Trail

Decent hike

The trail is accessed from a parking lot up a very steep hill, something to consider when you decide who you are walking with there.

One direction: the trail, we say, "goes to Pennsylvania" and ends about twenty-thirty minutes in walking. Nice and flat and easy, scenic on the lake.

The other direction: playground, picnic area, restrooms, and a little beach for the kids to play. You walk right on the lake, sometimes at first in full sun, then into a shaded trail that follows the "backyards" of houses that abut Cheat Lake. I believe this direction trail ends about 45-75 minutes in.

Sometimes its not worth the drive out or the steep access to parking for our family. I suggest you drop off at the bottom and park at the top.Especially with bicycles.
