Cumberland Valley Rail Trail

Great for kids and 1st time cyclists

June, 2020 by cora.rhoads

My kids did the whole trail and back. Granted we had a picnic for lunch and many breaks. It took us 8 hours to do it. The fun things to cross over and through happen at Newville and northward for a few miles. The rail cars are only at the Shippensburg Trail head. Other than those things there is just trees and farmland to see.

Memorial Day Tandem ride

May, 2020 by sandymo

We rode from New Freedom almost to the end past Monkton and return, a total of about 47 miles. We repeated the beginning 5 miles because we forgot something got to make the 5 mile climb into New Freedom twice. ¿¿ Anyway, this is a very nice trail, well shaded along much of the trail. As others have mentioned, it wouldn’t be the best for trikes or any two wheeled buggy as the trail has several miles of double track that would make for a bumpy ride...although we did see a few buggies and one trike. We loved the Gnomes that were on display and the the more than 80 flags in honor of Memorial Day. I’d recommend this trail but do we aware of the incline if you leave from New Freedom. It’s only rail to trail steep but it’s definitely noticeable.

Would love to find updates on improvements

May, 2020 by mhainly

I have been riding sections of this trail for years. They are working on improvements in several locations and I would love to see the updates, and expected completion dates. They have been working on the completing the Linglestown Road just past Wildwood to make it safer, but it would be nice to know when it is complete. I am thrilled to see these improvements being made!

Great trail. Everyone who uses a trail is automatically a trail maintenance volunteer. Lots of people pick up litter, fallen branches, etc. to keep trails clear and pleasant. A few leave wrappers, bottles, assorted trash and dog poop!- some right on the trail, some bagged but left on or near the trail. All these trails are maintained by volunteers, none of whose job is to clean up after thoughtless dog owners.

Quarryville West pass “Bridge”

May, 2020 by sandymo

We started our ride at the parking lot just before Quarryville. It’s the big one on Route 372, but there are no signs to identify it. Fortunately, you can see the trail if you look closely. Also, there doesn’t appear to be any direction signs at the park to show you which direction goes where. That said, if you turn right facing the trail and head that way you’ll be rewarded with a very nice trail. It goes by many beautiful farms. There are a number of trail accessed, but I don’t remember them all on this website so hopefully it will eventually be updated. We picked up a trail brochure at one of the access points and that was helpful. Anyway, we rode to the closed bridge. We took the on road bypass to repartee the trail. It’s not marked but it’s not a long distance but requires significant climbs so I wouldn’t recommend for casual cyclists or with kids as the road was well traveled with dump trucks and tractor trailers. This will be an even better trail once the bridge is repaired. Round trip of about28 miles. Great day for riding on the trail. trail.Thereplenty of benches for

Lancaster Junction Trail

Trail is fine, what's alongside it is not

May, 2020 by loloinnj

Upon the recommendation of friends, my husband and I walked this trail yesterday. It is as described, flat, well-maintained, quite wide, and with a lovely stream in several places.

However, what we did not expect was that alongside the trail were numerous meat farming operations nearly every quarter to half mile. Be prepared to walk past windowless enclosures with large fans running where the stench of animal waste is rampant. As if this wasn't sad enough, it was our enormous misfortune to pass by a hog farm as animals were being slaughtered and we could hear their cries. This was a particular nightmare for us as we are both vegetarians and animal rights activists. If we'd had any knowledge that these businesses were alongside the trail we would never have gone near it.

I understand that not all people feel the way we do and may not be bothered by any of this. However, I know there are a lot of like-minded people in this area and I could not in good conscience fail to review this trail so that others would not be subject to what we were subject to. It will be a long time, if ever, that I can get those sounds and images out of my mind.

Buffalo Valley Rail Trail

Awesome scenic Buffalo Valley Rail Trail

May, 2020 by paulruns7777

Unfortunately it was an unseasonably bitterly cold day (being that it was May 9th) that I explored this trail, but I was still able to enjoy all the nice farms that where a big part of my main ride from the Vicksburg Access location to its terminus in Lewisburg, and the other awesome scenery. The surface was almost all cinder and perfect for biking or running. It seems like a popular training trail for Bucknell University students as well as local folks. The trail is well marked with helpful green mile marker signs which were actually a half mile apart to keep you oriented on how far you’ve riden. The Vicksburg Trail entrance where I started had a great trail map, picnic tables ocourse parking.

Scenic PA Farmland Route

May, 2020 by ashleyhills93

We biked round trip from the Newville area to Shippensburg University. It’s a gravel path and well traveled by cyclists, runners, and horseback riders. A gem of a route connecting two very quaint PA towns.
