July 2020. Parked at Tarr Road in Middlefield. Biked North to the end in Chardon, and back for a 25 mile round trip. Entire trail is asphalt paved.
The southern section from Middlefield to Headwaters Park is accessible to horses.
North of Headwaters Park is the trails highest point so you will notice it while pedaling.
The trail goes through Amish country of fields and some wooded areas. There are 5 small covered bridges along the trail.
Trail services in Middlefield include places to eat, and a few stores / shops and if you need water you can get some in Middlefield.
This trail is the sister to the Erie Canal Towpath Trail. If you like paved biking and don't mind a few more intersections than the Towpath, then this is the trail for you. My favorite stretch is when the trail runs parallel to CVNP. Maybe the best part is that the Towpath tends to get more attention, so this trail can be a little less busy.
I've biked from Cleveland to Zoar on this trail and it is such a great trail with a lot of character. Of that, I'd say the stretch from Independence to Canton is my favorite. North of that it's mainly just Cleveland. And south of that is just woods and rural farms. As of summer 2020, about a 2 mile stretch just north of Akron is under renovation, so the detour is a bit of an annoyance. The trail mix stores in Peninsula and Boston Heights are a great place to grab bites to eat. My best suggestion for those who want a little more excitement than the flat terrain the trail has to offer is to detour from Peninsula and head to the Ledges Overlook in the CVNP. It's about a 400 foot climb so you'll feel a workout, but the views and the hiking are worth it especially in the fall. I camped at the boy scout camp near Zoar, and they were very easy to work with.
All purpose trail that is 13.5 miles one way and 26 miles in total round-trip. Trail is completely paved which makes it good for both road bikes with skinny tires as well as hybrid bikes. Trail is primarily flat, however there are few inclines that can be challenging to climb. Trail borders the Rocky River and goes in/out wooded areas. It can be crowded in certain locations, but in the early morning there aren’t many people on trail. I would definitely recommend this trail for both fitness ride and/or trip for the family.
Rode this trail after rain a rain storm (on me). Very little signs, tons of over growth, and had to walk my bike most of time due to poor conditions. Won’t do this one again until significant upgrades are made.
Rode the entire length and also into Huron County onto the next trail. I found this trail to be one of the easiest to ride. Seemed downhill both ways on a very good asphalt paved surface. Trail goes through several small towns, aka villages and the scenery is mostly farmlands and wooded sections. The downside to this trail is there are a lot of road crossings, too many to count though someone else has already done that! Luckily the road crossings are small not a lot of traffic back roads so if there is a wait, it's not a long wait.
Parked in Elyria and headed West. There are mile markers going in each direction.
8 miles from Elyria is Oberlin. There's an old train station there and you could bike into town for trail services such as lunch. We ate at a pizza place which had outdoor seating.
A few miles west of Oberlin is Kipton which is just biking through a community park.
We biked to Green Road and did the share the road section for a little bit before entering Huron County (next trail section) and biked on into Wakeman.
WCI Biking Division returned to the HCT over the July 4 weekend. HCT remains one of the best. Trail is a bit bumpy between Millersburg and Holmesville. Other than that it is very nice. We rode from Millersburg to Fredericksburg. We tried the new section starting from Glenmont. This is a challenge. If you want flat, it’s not here. A steady uphill grade going out 4 miles. We stopped there and turned around. Never pedaled once heading back. We will try again some day to do the entire length of the new section.
Group ride the end of June 2020. We biked the entire length as well as the connecting Niles Greenway trail for a 33 mile round trip. Well maintained trail and friendly riders.

Started on the Pennsylvania side, New Castle area.
First mile is pretty shaded, the next 2 out are not. To say the least I got to work on my tan (burn) on a 95 degree day.
The paved trail is mostly flat, a couple spots slanted off to the left or side but nothing terrible. There are a couple small inclines for a challenge.
The scenary is nothing of note unless a possible train or a big ole swamp is your thing (which I'm very much ok with)
So as always, if you are looking for a place to get a couple miles in, give this nice trail a try.
I rode the Ohio-Erie route this morning starting from Lock 39 at Rockside Rd in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. I had not ridden north of Harvard Rd and my wife and I are doing the OH2ERIE in a couple of weeks so I wanted to scout this section out to Edgewater park.
After the Harvard Rd TH the pike path runs adjacent to Harvard Rd and then turns north running along Jennings Rd to Steelyard Commons. There is one short gravel section as it crosses a company's driveway. It then goes behind the shops in Stellyard Commons. It was surprisingly pleasant with grass and trees planted. You still have RR tracks on one side and a chain link fence on the other but this is old school Cleveland Industrial area. There is a steel heritage museum along with some artifacts from the steel industry. The trail goes through two quick tunnels under Steelyard Commons and Quigley and the Towpath continues straight on the OTET turns right and goes up next to Quigley to W14th.
The Towpath continues on and its surprisingly nice - paved, with some great scenic overlooks. It deadends near Literary Rd. Its possible to go up University Rd (to be paved in the future but its rough right now) and rejoin the OTET at W14th and Abbey. If you go along Abbey Rd under the interstate you have a great shot of the Cleveland skyline with the Cleveland name sculpyure. Turn back around and pick of the Centennial Trail.
Once you leave Steelyard Commons I saw no OTET trail signs. There were other Cleveland Metroparks signs for their trails.
There was roundabout construction at W29th and Franklin so you detoured onto Clinton to parallel Franklin then I took W45th back to Franklin then W65th to Edgewater.
I had a great time. Never thought that the old part of Cleveland could be so enjoyable. If you are a fan of the Movie A Christmas story you can make a short detour and ride past it in the Tremont neighborhood.
Volunteers recently began reinstallation of a puncheon boardwalk approximately 1.25 miles from Kidds Mill trailhead. This effort opens up about 2.5 miles of trail which were previously difficult to access. Many thanks to R. Knight and B. Frazier! More boardwalk to follow in the same area.
Rail Trails are ridden for the pleasure, recreation, and enjoyment of the bike and nature. This trail, in Pennsylvania is in good condition and enjoyable. As soon as it crosses over into Ohio, it is absolutely Horrible. In fact, Horrible is too kind a word. Be warned. It is not pleasant. There are creaks, heaves, bumps that will drop your speed down to 2 -3 mph (if you stay with it). Ohio should be embarrassed. It is apparent nothing has been done since its opening in 1983. (See dedication sign at Ohio side start). From the New Castle start/ trailhead, would suggest stopping at the Ohio line approx. 7.5 miles, and turnaround. Western PA has so many trails to choose from that this will be our last visit here. Final Note: No restrooms, No port-a-johns, anywhere along entire route. Poor design again.
