Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

Cleveland Section north of Harvard Ave.

July, 2020 by pturner2

I rode the Ohio-Erie route this morning starting from Lock 39 at Rockside Rd in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. I had not ridden north of Harvard Rd and my wife and I are doing the OH2ERIE in a couple of weeks so I wanted to scout this section out to Edgewater park.

After the Harvard Rd TH the pike path runs adjacent to Harvard Rd and then turns north running along Jennings Rd to Steelyard Commons. There is one short gravel section as it crosses a company's driveway. It then goes behind the shops in Stellyard Commons. It was surprisingly pleasant with grass and trees planted. You still have RR tracks on one side and a chain link fence on the other but this is old school Cleveland Industrial area. There is a steel heritage museum along with some artifacts from the steel industry. The trail goes through two quick tunnels under Steelyard Commons and Quigley and the Towpath continues straight on the OTET turns right and goes up next to Quigley to W14th.

The Towpath continues on and its surprisingly nice - paved, with some great scenic overlooks. It deadends near Literary Rd. Its possible to go up University Rd (to be paved in the future but its rough right now) and rejoin the OTET at W14th and Abbey. If you go along Abbey Rd under the interstate you have a great shot of the Cleveland skyline with the Cleveland name sculpyure. Turn back around and pick of the Centennial Trail.

Once you leave Steelyard Commons I saw no OTET trail signs. There were other Cleveland Metroparks signs for their trails.

There was roundabout construction at W29th and Franklin so you detoured onto Clinton to parallel Franklin then I took W45th back to Franklin then W65th to Edgewater.

I had a great time. Never thought that the old part of Cleveland could be so enjoyable. If you are a fan of the Movie A Christmas story you can make a short detour and ride past it in the Tremont neighborhood.

Garfield Park Reservation All Purpose Trail

ok for beginners

June, 2020 by emilyseguin

My young son and I biked this trail. Once around the loop, then up to the falls and back. It was 5.71 miles, according to our tracker. There were some hills that were too steep/long for a young rider. There were 2 specifics areas where I did not feel safe, personally. It is necessary to cross some major roads to complete this trail, and one crosswalk light was not functioning, unfortunately, at a busy and tricky intersection where multiple roads meet at odd angles. The view of the falls was mostly obscured by foliage, and we didn’t get a good view at all. This was really disappointing, as it was kind of out “reward” for a lengthy ride (for us) on a hot day.

Short and sweet with beautiful views of the cultural gardens. If you want a longer/challenging ride take the lakeshore afterward

Lake-to-Lakes Trail

Somewhat disappointing

I agree with the previous reviewer on everything, but I'll add one thing: When I biked this trail in June 2020, Horsehoe Lake had been drained and was a big ugly mud flat. Lower Shaker Lake was still pretty. Otherwise, this trail is ok but unimpressive.

Bridgeway Trail

Lovely for All

This is a lovely, shaded trail that we found to be one of the best And widest that we have biked. Considerate users, not very crowded, well maintained signage and trail surfaces, fantastic views of river across unique bridges. Truly a gem for bikers, walkers, runners and birders.

Cleveland Lakefront Bikeway

Mix between Lakefront and Urban biking

The starting point is at Edgewater Park. It starts off beautiful in a park that is well taken care of. Then once you cross the bridge at West 25th and Detroit Ave, you are in the center of downtown. Navigating through the city streets is stop and go. Then once you come to the Cleveland Brown stadium, you are not riding on a trail, but again a street road. Thankfully this road does not see a lot of traffic. Once you pass the airport, you ride along the water into a beautiful neighborhood on Lakeshore Blvd passing by beautiful mansions. The biggest downfall I had riding this trail was coming up to and through Euclid. Biking lanes are not well marked. Many cars do not respect bikers and right up next to you making me not feel at ease. The final end point at Wildwood Park which not is the best kept park in relation to edgewater, however they did have paved trails and beautiful scenic outlooks on the beaches/water. I wish this trail had more signs that identified that you are still on the Lakefront Trail because it is easy to take a wrong turn and get lost. I rode from Edgewater to Wildwood Park and back, but my final ending mileage was 30 miles.

Chippewa Rail-Trail

Short and sweet

April, 2020 by lvjohn

This trail mostly paved blacktop and rather short. It is a great walking trail and a trail where very young riders can safely build strength and confidence. The northern terminus isn't much. Those wishing to ride through Medina should aim for Fair Road to get through the worst of the traffic.
