Allegheny River Trail

Began in emlenton, (drive down bike path to parking) after 1st tunnel went off the trail up fairly steep hill about a 1/2 mile to Freedom Falls. Very nice falls with old iron furnace just down stream. Back downhill to bike path continued toward Franklin through the second tunnel. Turned around at the landowners that won't allow passage across their property ( the trail does continue past them though). Nice ride!

Nice trail, crushed gravel. Usually not as busy as the other side of the river, the Canal Trail. You have more chance of seeing people riding their horses on this section. They have right of way.

We came from the Pittsburgh area just to ride this trail. It was a joy and we loved the town of Leetonia, especially the Dairy Queen!
But seriously, it is a beautiful trail, most of it in a woodsy atmosphere, and definitely one we will come back to again.

I began at the Trailhead near Carnegie, PA and rode only to the West Virginia State line since I was doing an out and back making my mileage 47.25 instead of 58. I rode the day after some very heavy rain. The trail in Allegheny County is gravel and while wet, for the most part, the water was absorbed by the trail or ran off. There were a few places where you could see a bit of the trail washed out, but it was no problem with the 28 mm gravel tires I was riding. A tree had fallen and was blocking a portion of the trail in Allegheny County when I passed in the morning. Upon my return a few hours later, crews were working on the remains of the tree which had been removed from the trail surface.

God Bless Washington County where I grew up, the trail is paved from the Allegheny County line to the West Virginia Line. There were no puddles from the heavy rains and the pavement was just about pristine. Beautiful riding surface. Much to my surprise, this trail had some elevation changes if you care to call 879 feet of climbing over 47 miles an elevation change. I doubt any grade exceeded 1.5%, but there were both uphill and downhill sections going both directions.

The reviews of this trail were pretty negative. One complained about the pavement in Washington County and I have to conclude the author was off his meds. I thought it was wonderful. Others complained that it was not very scenic. While there were no tunnels or viaducts or vast expanses to view, it was just a rural ride that I felt was all beautiful all of the time. I saw many deer including a Mama and her fawn and an assortment of other critters.

On my return trip, I stopped in Burgettstown for a late breakfast of pancakes and eggs at the 1709 Main Street restaurant just off the trail. Typical small town diner, good food, courteous country people, and great prices. A couple ladies riding the trail also came in to eat while I was there.

I am sure I will ride the Panhandle Trail again when I am visiting Pops. I can find little to not like about the Panhandle Trail. I ding it one gear as there is no outstanding feature that is a must see, so it gets 9 Gears (on a 10 gear cassette).

The Summit County portion of the trail is maintained well for skaters; Portage County, not so much—they don’t clean up the debris well and the tree root bumps are a pain. I’d recommend ALU wheels no smaller than 84mm in size in order to safely clear stones and sticks. The inclines at most of the road intersection are brutal not only due to their steepness but also because of the blind spots caused by curves. It’s the only Bike and Hike path where I actually wear protective gear. Freedom Trail (off 261 and Middlebury Rd) is ideal for skaters except for the absolutely terrible and frequent road intersections the further west you travel (from Kent).

Have split up the trail into several sections from Cleveland to Mass. Really enjoy it. Curious if section North of Mustill Store is open yet. Had been rerouted for sewer project, I think.

Freedom Trail (OH)

Found several articles and pictures about the new trailhead on Mill St. in Akron. YEEHA!!! Drove on over. Found some nice artwork on the bridge abutments, some new grass, BUT the trail was just 2 dirt tracks covered with weeds. BUMMER!!! Drove east on Mill and N Forge, turned right on N Arlington and found a new trailhead. All done except for the signs. (See photo) Surrounded by scrap yards and kind of desolate, but parked anyway. Hopped on the bike and rode west toward Akron on a surprisingly beautiful tree-lined and shaded paved trail. Crossed a newly redecked Erie RR bridge over N Forge. Rode under noisy SR8 and then came to an abrupt end of the pavement and a Road Closed sign. (See photo). Think I was about behind Famous Supply on N Union. No trail access there, but did see a neighborhood access back East of SR8. Rode back east, back past the scrap yards, over a new bridge over a RR track and onto the existing trail at Eastwood Ave. Near Eastwood is more wide open since the trail follows power lines. Love what somebody wrote on the Road Closed sign "Finish me Akron....I go nowhere". It'll be nice to someday be able to ride all the way from the Towpath Trail to Ravenna. Good biking trail except that the areas of uncrushed limestone make for rough riding. Did not try the trail south of Rt. 800 due to previous reports that it is difficult riding.

My daughter and I rode this trail for the first time recently on a hot (90F+)June day, having traveled about 2 hours from central Ohio for the experience.

We parked at the trail head in Dalton; Village Green Park; 41 S Freet St, Dalton, OH 44618. We noticed right away that there is a REAL restroom available for use.

The trail was notably rural in character, with a high percentage of shade given the tree canopy; perhaps 80% was shaded. Most of the road crossings were low traffic volume roads, but I recall perhaps 2 crossings required full attention to the traffic as hills served to hide the vehicles from view.

I'd estimate that 1/2 this trail was shale and about a mile of that was somewhat loose ... several inches deep shale that may bind a tire causing the inattentive rider to slide and perhaps crash. That said, I couldn't recommend this trail for skinny tire bikes.

This is a great trail which runs N/S from Canfield to Niles. Mile 10.6 is at Western Reserve Road in Canfield. Mile 0 connects with the Niles bikeway trail with a seamless connection. Trail goes through open areas of fields and shaded areas through trees. Eateries nearby the trail. Several parking areas along the trail as well.

Butler-Freeport Community Trail

The trail is 20.5 miles in length. We started in Freeport and rode north to Butler. The first 13.5 miles is uphill. When you return, you will find an easy ride. From mile marker 16.5 to 20 is downhill to Butler. The trail will end at a parking lot .5 mile past marker 20. The trail is mostly along a stream and through woods. Many people seem to use this trail on weekends. My favorite part between mile marker 17 and 17.5. There are signs that you are entering a shooting range. CAUTION. I guess if you hear a bullet coming you are to duck. You will also bike past a small shop for bicyclists at marker 15.9. At the highest point on the trail at 13.3 is a historical sign about the area and the old railway. It is wide enough for two riders except between 16.5 and 19.5. The grass through the years has grown in on the sides to narrow the path to about 3 feet wide.

This is a section that I had not ridden before as it is not part of the Ohio to Erie Trail Route. This is a nice trail with several nice trailheads along the way, but the quality of the trail surface is not as good as that of the crushed limestone surface of the Towpath heading north toward Cleveland. The limestone surface in this portion of the trail is inconsistent. Some areas are typical of the Towpath overall, but in many areas the surface is more of a hard-packed dirt, which would mean mud after periods of rain. In other areas rain runoff has piled the limestone up into soft, loose areas that would be difficult for bikes with thinner tires. Occasionally, you will ride over short sections of pavement which I believe have been put down in areas where there may be flooding problems. Overall I found the condition of the towpath in this section pretty good, but not necessarily up to the quality of sections further north.

In terms of the area and sights along this section I enjoyed this trail. The further south you traveled the more rural the surrounding countryside became. While I might find myself traveling alone for several miles, I did not feel isolated. I came across other cyclists and quite a few pedestrians, through out my ride; not bad for a summer weekday morning.

My one complaint is that the map here in TrailLink shows the trail ending at the McDonnell Trailhead on State Route 212 northwest of Bolivar, Ohio. The trail does pick up after a short ride along Route 212 and makes a link to the Zoar Valley Trail after following bike paths, streets, and sidewalks to the Fort Laurens Memorial Site south of the town. This through-town bike route is well marked. It is much safer than following 212 through town.
