June 2025 Ride-Shade and more Shade!

June, 2025 by vicki1960

On a hot summer day, this is the trail to ride! Miles and miles of nothing but shade. Always an enjoyable ride on this trail. Follows French Creek which was muddy and high levels of water due to so much recent rains. Saw a hawk along the trail. And a turtle down near the Beans trailhead.

GREAT TRAIL

June, 2025 by zap26

Visited Erie on a whim to do this trail and it did not disappoint. I biked from my hotel by the Pier millennium tower to the park. For the most part it was easy because there was a bike trail but it was also a little confusing when I got to the intersection which I should have turned (not clearly indicating to turn toward the isle) so I went 4 miles out of my way. Once I got on the island there was a separate bike path throughout the park. It was flat and beautiful ride. Stopped at one of the beaches to get my feet wet since it was 95 degrees out and stopped and did the tour of the lighthouse. This was definitely worth visiting Erie to do. Found my way back to the hotel much easier (without going out of my way). Only time I was actually on the road with cars was near Waldameer Park and for the most part felt safe since the speed limit was 25 MPH. If you are visiting Erie, definitely worth the ride. I think it would be really cool to watch the sunset over lake Erie from the island.

Poor maintenance in NY

June, 2025 by thejenni.girl

The PA portion is a decent greenway. The instant you cross into NY you see evidence of vandalism, 4-wheelers nearly run you over (they don’t slow down), multiple rotting deer carcasses dumped on the trail, piles of garbage, horrendous ruts & puddles from ATVs and my personal favorite: 2 young Amish having sex in the middle of the path. it was not the experience I was expecting at all! Do better New York!

May, 2025 Ride

Beautiful Spring day for a ride. Got through that rough Winter and mostly rainy Spring now time to enjoy the trail. Parked at the North Bloomfield trailhead on Route 87. Headed south for about 10 miles and turned around then North to Orwell and back. Enjoyable trail and ride!

Coffee

June, 2025 by dkurta1234

This is the second time riding the WRG.We started at The Rock Creek Falls Trailhead. Still like because of the wide trail. We also found when you get to the Austinburg Trail Head that about 500 feet west of it is a great coffee shop. They roast their own coffee and have fresh baked pastries. A small coffee and tea and 2 banana bread with chocolate was around $10.00. We like to support local businesses along trails if we can. Safe travels.

Coffee

June, 2025 by dkurta1234

We have ridden the trail a couple of times this year. We started at Rock Creek Trailhead and rode to Ashtabula. Nice wide trail. A few bumps but that is to be expected. When you get to Austinburg there is a Coffee shop there that is a good place to get some coffee and a pastry. I believe it’s Station Coffee and Pastry. Coffee beans are roasted on site and fresh baked pastry. We had the banana bread with chocolate chips. Small coffee and a tea and two slices banana bread was around $10.00. We love riding trails where you can stop and try some local shops.

Typical Urban Trail

The trail is very poorly marked! The area around Behrend campus and also Lampe Campground near the channel are very nice. The rest is simply urban riding. But it’s better than nothing if you live in the Erie area.

Spring Ride

May 2025-Spring Ride. Great ride as always and enjoy visiting the Spillway. Trail is approx 3.5 miles in length, flat and paved. Mid point is the Spillway. Plenty of parking and restrooms.

Bugs galore

Very nice trail. Pretty scenery but the amount of gnats on it ruin it. There was probably about 1 minute of the ride where there wasn’t a swarm of gnats you were going through.

End of Winter Ride

March, 2025 by vicki1960

Rare 70 degree day mid-March provided a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the trail. Trail is free of any ice/snow and wet leaves. Paved surface for 6 miles from Meadville to Krider Road. Beans trailhead has a new layer of gravel so it won't be as much of a mud hole in the Spring!

Winter Walk

February, 2025 by vicki1960

Lots of snow, then melt, then more snow, then ice, then thaw. Mid February the latest conditions are ice on the bottom, several inches of hard packed snow in the middle, and 1/2" of fresh powder on top. Actually great for XC skiing and walking.

Bailey Trailhead Icy Hike

February, 2025 by vicki1960

February 2025. Parked at the Bailey Road trailhead and walked. The trail was icy as was the parking lot. Had to walk along side of the trail. Still nice to enjoy the trail in the Winter!
