This trail has really gone down hill. Rode it the other day and my wrist hurt for days because of how rough it is. Used to be my favorite trail now it’s barely rideable.
Rare 70 degree day mid-March provided a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the trail. Trail is free of any ice/snow and wet leaves. Paved surface for 6 miles from Meadville to Krider Road. Beans trailhead has a new layer of gravel so it won't be as much of a mud hole in the Spring!
Lots of snow, then melt, then more snow, then ice, then thaw. Mid February the latest conditions are ice on the bottom, several inches of hard packed snow in the middle, and 1/2" of fresh powder on top. Actually great for XC skiing and walking.
February 2025. Parked at the Bailey Road trailhead and walked. The trail was icy as was the parking lot. Had to walk along side of the trail. Still nice to enjoy the trail in the Winter!
February 2025 weeks of ice and snow and cold weather. The snow had melted off but the actual trail remained very icy. Use caution!
Winter Walk, January 2025. Plenty of snow on the trail. At this time a little icy. Can XC ski it. Or ride fat tire bike.
Enjoyed a short winter walk on the trail. Surface under all the snow is pavement. Mid January it's got about 6" of packed non smooth snow and ice mixture on it. Ok for walking, could be difficult on a bicycle, maybe could use a fat tire bike.
Trail is great for Winter useage! Snowshoeing/walking. We also saw XC ski tracks. We were on mile markers 9.5 thru 11. Trail surface under the 8" of snow is grass/dirt. Nice and flat. goes through wooded areas and follows the old canal.
Parked at mile 11.5 at the Conneaut Lake end of the trail, located behind the winery. A good snowfall had fallen a few days before our walk on The Ernst Nature Trail. Surface is dirt. A new shelter located at mile 11.25 of the trail. Trail follows old canal and runs through the game lands. A beautiful trail for a wintery walk in the snow!
Last day of hunting season. Met at least 5 hunters looking for that elusive deer! Lack of snow has hampered hunting this season. Less than 25° all day but clear with strong sun; very pleasant 4 mile hike.
The Zoar Valley Trail (aka the Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail) has received a significant improvement. In the past the trail was nothing but a primitive footpath once you headed south from the Zoarville Station Bridge/Rt 800. As of October 31, 2024, you can now take a new, exceptionally well constructed trail the two miles to the Dover Dam. (OK, so it isn’t officially open as of that date but should be any day now.) It is a very scenic ride especially in the Fall. Once you are at the dam you’ll just continue on the existing dam access road that will take you to the end of the trail at Rt. 416 north of New Philadelphia. If you go any further south it will be on well traveled roads with hills and limited line of sights. (I might suggest Rt 800 to New Philadelphia via Dover. It might be longer but at least the road has “share” signs and is relatively flat.) The trick to getting to the improved trail once you cross the Zoarville Station Bridge, again if you are headed south, is to head straight to the metal gate you’ll see a short distance ahead. Do not turn right onto the primitive trail before the gate. Once at the gate you can go around it to the right or simply pull the chain that appears to lock the gate (it isn’t) through the hoops on the gate and open it. Once past the gate keep going straight ahead on the paved road for approximately 150 feet and you’ll see the new trail to the right. I have biked the Ohio & Erie Towpath trail from Cleveland to Rte 800 many times over the years and this new section may very well be one of the nicest.
