My wife and I read the reviews before starting out in Bellefontaine and were pleasantly surprised at how smooth the chip & seal trail was. The first few miles the scenery is nothing exceptional but once you get away from town and closer to West Liberty it opens up to beautiful rolling farm fields and woods which is spectacular in the fall. I would recommend starting out in West Liberty (there is a parking lot for access to the trail off SR 245) and riding the 10 miles to Urbana. The Depot Coffee shop is right off the trail as you enter Urbana and a welcome stop before continuing south or the return trip to West Liberty. We're looking forward to completing the ride from Urbana to Springfield on our next trip! My wife and I are in our 60's and healthy but not avid cyclists. The trail is flat and rides easily. It's a hidden gem and a wonderful way to spend a beautiful fall afternoon.
Great trail to ride , the hog farm near Williamsburg smells terrible and at least 3 times big Rottweiler dogs have chased us and nearly wrecked us at the hog farm entrance. Very scary and dangerous. We ride 5 days a week and don’t see them everyday but potentially a terrible situation. Other than that a great ride and well maintained.
Beautiful and varied scenery, start to finish.The northern end is poorly marked!We completely lossed the trail at Piqua and had to double back...just added to the adventure. ¿¿
The trail from Verona to Trotwood is nice, some tree lined, mostly riding through corn and bean fields. DO NOT try to take the connector to the southern section. Route is not marked, no bike lane and once we found the trail back, it was covered with weeds and glass.
The trail North of Dayton to Piqua was frustrating for the first timer due to lack of trail markers. The town of Troy was the most confusing and is very very poorly marked. Compared to other local trials it has very little amenities and It’s hard to find water or restrooms My only other observation of this trail is that it doesn’t mark any road hazards. So beware of Tree roots small curbs and severe cracks for example. The beauty of the trail makes up for a lot this. This trail feels like you are riding multiple trials in a day due to its changing scenery with its calming river views and interesting city scapes.
Bellefontaine-Urbana Completed this portion with my daughter. The tar and chip was much nicer than I expected. (Fine chip and well compacted). Only bad part was a stretch with deer flies.
Drove to Richmond and skated north 12 miles. The only negative is the pig farm you have to pass. The smell is atrocious and as a vegan it’s even more disgusting. Gorgeous gorgeous trail! Smoothly paved, little to no debris. Would do it again in a second!
We rode this trail from Toulon to Princeville today. It was great! The path was very good. It is mostly shaded. Excellent. We stopped in Wyoming on our way back for lunch. Ate at 111 Coffee Shop. Don’t be fooled, this is NOT just a coffee shop. The lunch was delicious. And it is decorated all with bikes! Perfect for us bikers. And check out the bathroom. Cute!!! Can’t wait to do more of the route from Princeville going south.
We rode this trail on our tandem not realizing how bad the connector roads between the two segments were. Old Richmond has a wide sidewalk but has so much glass and so many weeds it is impassible. Not sure how we didn't get a flat.
We gave up and turned around and headed back to downtown Dayton. Ride the Mad River instead.
From downtown out to Wesleyan Metro Park (only a few miles) is nice and we like the new work that has been done.
Got on the trail at Rotary Park and headed north. So far worst trail I’ve been on. Very scenic and pretty in some spots, but the trail was so rough and uncared for I could only get 2 miles in before I had to turn back.
Once you get to know the trail, it’s great. There are a lot of points around downtown that I had to have my phone out to navigate. We rode the trail a few times over the weekend and by the second try at it, we were good.
