Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

Enjoyed this part of Ohio

October, 2021 by creischl

We started in Independence, where there is a big parking lot and decent restrooms, and rode to Peninsula, where there are restaurants and a bike shop, and returned--about 23 - 24 miles. Found that the surroundings became more lush and wooded the closer we got to Peninsula. Next time, we'll start there and go south or ride on a day when we could take the train one way and do the whole trail. Signs indicated the train runs Wed. - Sunday, May - October. (We rode on a Tuesday.) The trail surface varies--a combo of asphalt, well-packed or uneven gravel, or hard-packed dirt. At this time of year (Oct) there were a considerable number of walnuts on the trail to navigate through, too. We did this trail as a break in a long car trip and it was worth it. Saw some amazing herons along the way!

Great Guernsey Trail

Rode this trail twice this summer, once in June and again in September. Beautiful trail. Well maintained and mostly flat. Easy to find trailhead.

T. J. Evans Trail

The trees along the trail provided shade keeping us cooler than expected.

September, 2021 by convertiblewoman

We rode the trail on a hot, sunny Sunday morning in Mid-September, but the trees along the trail provided shade keeping us much cooler than we expected. The parking areas listed on the county map were a little hard to find but once we found the Bicentennial Park (no amenities) all was well. We really enjoyed the ride as there's a little bit of everything on the trail as well as beautiful scenery and lots of wildlife.

The one downside is that the majority of the trail that we rode on had no berm and the drop off in some areas was a little scary for me (our home trail has a two foot berm on both sides except for bridges). The other bikers on the trail were great in going single file when they met us.

I would expect that it's a beautiful trail in every season based on the trees and plants that we saw. Granville is beautiful little town with a lot to enjoy in the down town area. It's definitely a trail and area that we would come back to.

Sippo Valley Trail

rough pavement, smooth gravel

September, 2021 by tandemspeaks

Beautiful mostly shaded trail between Dalton and Massillon. Three miles in the middle of 10 mile trail is gravel (not paved). The paved sections at each end are in rough shape. Lots of roots, bumps and rough bridge entrances/exits as well as a trench right after first bridge coming from Dalton - watch out! The gravel section was smooth and easy to ride on our trek gravel bikes.

Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

Lovely historic ride thru a National Park

September, 2021 by ejlayden

Started the tow path in Independence, OH and rode to Peninsula. Had to back track to our parked car - so would recommend planning to take the train at Independence and then ride the whole trail from the Akron end.
Good riding surface of packed limestone - even for riders like us who prefer paved. Fun lunch stop in Peninsula. Not often you can ride 20+ miles in a National Park.

County Line Trail (OH)

Just beautiful. Smooth asphalt trail in the country with low traffic. I loved the scenery and solitude!

Meredith State Road Trail

Construction had begun on a section in northeast Sunbury

September, 2021 by eshawger

Construction has begun north from Hartford Road seemingly to connect to the southern most part of the Meredith State Road trail. The gaps are being filled in and this will be an awesome trail connecting Westerville and Columbus to Mt. Vernon and beyond when completed.

Conotton Creek Trail

Aug 21, 2021 ride

Saw this trail on rails to trails site and decided to drive 1.5 hours to try. I parked in Jewett. It was freshly paved and was able to ride 10.6 of the 11.2 miles. The reason I did not ride the last .6 miles was it was being paved at that moment. I think this trail would be a great fall trail when the leaves change. Most of the trail is in the woods.
There are plenty of shelters if it rains. Also covered bridges, benches, and some nearby convenience stores. Also an ice cream stand at the halfway point in Scio. I will go back in the fall. Rpd1

Holmes County Trail

Trail is very good but be aware.

August, 2021 by forsterjj

Have traveled Danville to Glenmont multiple times. The trail is mostly covered with shade from the trees and that is the reason I like riding it. I don't mind the horse poo on the trail just go around. What I do mind is the buggies not giving any room to pass. This weekend had two buggies not giving but a foot or two to pass around. Guess I'll need a rather loud horn rather than a bell from now on!

There is no parking at the north trailhead itself, but there are parking lots for some businesses very close.

Bolivar - Route 212 Update (S turn under train bridge)

August, 2021 by crableg300

For those of you that have ridden the trail in Bolivar where you had to ride on route 212 on that dangerous S part under the train bridge, well there is an amazing and positive change.

The folks have completed the trail with a wooden deck under the train bridge and around. The start of the new change occurs at the one 212 trail head. Enjoy - the people that did the work did a GREAT job.
