Olde Muskingum Trail

An Alternative to the Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail

January, 2018 by orangedoug

In April of 2017 I rode the Olde Muskingum Trail. This trail can be found along the Tuscarawas River in Canal Fulton, Ohio. To me this is an unusual trail. On one side of the Tuscarawas River you have the Congressman Ralph Regula Towpath Trail which follows the old Ohio & Erie Canal. This trail has historical significance, it currently has a working section of canal, and an actual canal boat ride if you are so inclined. The Olde Muskingum Trail is on the opposite side of the river and was an old railroad siding or right of way that has been converted into a trail. It too is a crushed limestone surface and you would be hard pressed to tell the two trails apart except for the canal facilities visible and in use on the Towpath Trail. The Olde Muskingum Trail is approximately 6 miles long. If you combine the two trails with Cherry Street in the north and Forty Corners Road in the south you could make a 12.5 mile loop to ride. The Congressman Regula Towpath Trail is part of the Ohio to Erie cross state trail. Combine that with the working canal boat attraction and the Towpath can get pretty busy during the summer. My guess is that the locals probably prefer the Olde Muskingum Trail because it is less busy.

Stark Electric Railway Trail

Is a One Mile Trail Useful?

January, 2018 by orangedoug

The Stark Electric Railway Trail is a short trail (1.15 miles) that traces the former interurban steetcar route that used to exist along Mahoning Avenue in Canton, OH. The asphalt trail surface was in good condition. I started at the corner of Kirby and Mahoning Avenues and rode southwest on the trail to it's listed endpoint at the corner of Hilcher and Mahoning Avenues. However, the sidewalk/bike path still remains wider than a standard sidewalk until you reach a small memorial park honoring the armed forces and police and fire officers at the intersection of Royal Ave, 15th Street, and Mahoning Ave., NE. I found that crossing the intersection of Harmont and Mahoning Avenues near the center of the trail was tricky because of the volume of traffic. While this trail commemorates the former electric rail line that existed here, unless there is some future plan to lengthen this trail or connect it to another, it seems pointless.

Nickelplate Trail (OH)

Just a Neighborhood Trail

January, 2018 by orangedoug

This is a short (2.5 miles) neighborhood recreation trail that was created from a former rail line. Whether there is room for expansion in the future is unknown, but as an outside observer, I view it as doubtful as the trail endings occur where the former rail corridor enters into private lands. Signs at the southern end of the trail mention you are entering private land. The highlight of this trail is its connection to Mary C. Metzger Park.

County Line Trail (OH)

A Rail Trail that Reminds You of Its Heritage

January, 2018 by orangedoug

This roughly 7 mile trail runs between the city of Rittman and the village of Creston in Wayne County, Ohio and parallels a very active CSX rail line. It's a flat trail that a family can enjoy together, although there is a one mile on-road section near the village of Sterling and one active rail crossing there as well. Therefore, families with younger children may want to avoid this one. One interesting feature of this trail is a downloadable trail app that provides information about history, fitness, and wildlife at certain markers along the way.

T. J. Evans Trail

Nice trail but road bikers beware

October, 2017 by fhunker

I have been on this trail three or four times this summer and fall, and many times over the past several years. I would rate this trail a 4-5 BUT on a road bike, will not be a smooth ride, and now developing some serious bumps, one of which west of Granville caught me off-guard and almost threw me off. Parts of the trail have been repaved-those sections are very nice compared to some that have not been repaved. There is a long uphill grade out of Granville to Johnstown, about 11 miles. Hopefully more of the trail will be repaved into 2018.

Buckeye Scenic Trail

Nice 11 mile round-trip

October, 2017 by fhunker

This trail runs north-south, with more uphill grade heading south than north. The first couple of miles from the north run through rural suburban areas, then through farmland further south. Most of the trail is lined with bushes and trees, not much exposed out in the farmland area, so there is some natural blocking of easterly or westerly wind. Trail surface good, I was out on a very nice Sunday morning, passed 2 bikers, a jogger and a few dog-walkers. Light use.

Holmes County Trail

Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

My first long ride.

I was able to complete the entire Ohio and Erie Towpath Trail over a two day period. First day rode from Cleveland to Mansfield, finished off the second day. A beautiful ride as the trail passes through woodlands, small towns and larger cities.

Mohican Valley Trail

Bridge of Stink

September, 2017 by charlie 48

Road the Mohigan and Koskosing trails yesterday. The Bridge of Dream is in a class of its own. WHAT A MESS 1 Does anyone ever sweep it out ? Temperatures in the 80's, bridge full of "road apples" We all nearly lost our lunch. Even the trail leading up to it was a mess. I've shared the Holmes County Trail with horse many times. Never this kind of mess. People. Talk to your neighbor county and get some tip on trail maintenance.

Mohican Valley Trail

Mohican to Holmes County trail

September, 2017 by fhunker

Just rode from Mt Vernon to the eastern "end" of the Holmes County trail, round trip about 52 miles. Kokosing-Mohican-Holmes County trails are one of my favorite trial rides in Ohio. Lots of shade most of the way, and the Bridge of Dreams is very nice.

Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

Pleasant trail for hiking/jogging but not for a road bike (with thin tires)

September, 2017 by uresh.kuruhuri

I did a ride over a weekend on my road bike from Lock 39 trailhead towards south about 8 miles (and back). Most of the route is limestone and gravel but hard and few patches are asphalt (but they are very rough). On a sunny/dry day, you could expect some amount of dust on your bike by the end of the ride. To me on my bike it is an ok ok ride. However, a mountain bike or a hybrid bike with wide tires would be better suitable.

On the other hand, it is a very good trail for a hike, walking and jogging. The better side is, it is a bit scenic trail for walk/jog. The cuyahoga river runs through the trail and is beautiful to look at all the greenery. I am sure it would be pretty beautiful around fall season.
