North Coast Inland Trail (Sandusky and Ottawa Counties)

Really great up until going on the streets

I started in Elmore and headed east towards Bellevue, but the on-road traffic conditions in Fremont were too much for me. I got to ride about 11 of the 28 miles.

Excellent, flat and hard-paved as a dedicated trail from Elmore to Fremont, pretty scenery on this very flat section of Ohio. Nice to see open farmland, and to cross under the Ohio Turnpike.

In Fremont the trail continues onto a light-traffic but 4-lane curbed street with no adjacent sidewalk. The curb means that I couldn't quickly get off the road itself, so I rode on the grass and through parking lots to stay away from the possibility of cars. I didn't see many bike signs, so I made a couple of wrong turns on quiet country roads (which was wishful thinking) but righted myself with google maps. The route continues on 4 lanes until turns right onto a 2-lane streett a narrow berm. During the day of my ride, there was heavy traiff, utility work and new building construction underway, with cones blocking the berm access, I had had enough by that point and turned around.

A Trail on Hold

I rode what I will call the northern and southern sections of the trail. On the northern segment the trail runs from the Erie County water tower to River View Drive. The southern segment runs for about a mile along the old Wheeling & Lake Erie rail corridor from North Main Street in Milan, Ohio. So, the lawsuit mentioned in other reviews here must have been favorable to the abutting landowners as the trail certainly does not cover the same distances as mentioned in zars 2010 review.

The northern section has a grass surface that covers a solid crushed gravel under layer. The DuPont Marsh is pretty with many types of aquatic birds to be seen. Where the trail ends you get a good opportunity to see the Huron River. The southern section is very similar to the northern section of the trail in that it has a grass surface covering a crushed gravel under layer. However, the surface is softer than what you find in the northern portion of the trail and probably difficult to ride after a prolonged rain. Definitely, not a trail for skinny tired street bikes.

At this point the Huron River Greenway is probably best left to the local communities as the grass surface and several mile gap between segments do not make it attractive to people looking for new trails to ride. Until local property owners decide to reopen their portions of the rail corridor to the public I would imagine that improvements to the trail surface and additional amenities probably are not in the picture for Erie MetroParks. There are a few pretty sights on these two trail segments but until they are connected to each other or to some other nearby trail I would not go out of my way to ride this trail.

This Trail is Worth a Trip to Ride It

The Richland B&O Trail runs through the Richland County, Ohio towns of Butler, Bellville, Lexington, and Mansfield. What's nice about this trail is that the distance between towns is approximately the same throughout the trail -- approximately 6 miles. Throughout its run, the trail goes through several types of scenery from farmland through woods and into urban settings.

The trail is paved but I noticed that several areas are suffering from tree root uplift so the surface gets bumpy at times. In addition, some road crossings are tricky, particularly, either due to the amount or speed of traffic and in some cases the angle at which the trail crosses the road. The worst offending crossings have flashing stop signs directed at riders and pedestrians on the trail, but I feel that perhaps these crossings should also have push button flashers for the trail users to activate to alert drivers when they want to cross.

Overall a trail worth checking out.

Loudonville Pedestrian and Bicycle Pathway

A Pleasant Local Utilitarian Trail

The Loudonville Pedestrian and Bicycle Pathway is a pleasant little utilitarian path. It runs between the Riverside Park in the town of Loudonville, Ohio and the entrance to the campground in Mohican State Park to the south. Most of this pathway runs parallel to State Route 3 and runs through the commercial district south of town. Much of the businesses in this commercial district focus on the camping and canoeing tourists that come to take advantage of the Mohican River and the nearby state park. From what I can see it provides access to local residents to reach the businesses along Route 3 which I'm sure employ quite a few people. It also provides the tourists staying at the numerous campgrounds along this stretch to a number of eateries in the area and the town in general. The pathway is is good shape except for a 100 foot section just north of Wally Road that has been dug up and not repaved at this point.

Currently this trail services only the local community, but I’ve read of plans to attempt to connect this trail with Mohican Valley Trail, which is part of the OTET (Ohio to Erie Trail) Route. This 16.5 mile proposed route is called the Wally Road Multimodal Corridor Concept Plan and would connect to the MVT in Brinkhaven, Ohio. I would not consider this trail one to travel to at present, but if the Wally Road Multimodal Corridor Plan is developed, then it and the Loudonville P&B Pathway would be a part of something worth seeking out.

I've ridden it several times and there are very coarse rocks in places where trail parallels road. I was riding an urban bike with larger tires so I handled it ok. You people with road bikes will blow a tire. Be careful!

Chippewa Inlet Trail

A Wetlands Wonder

The Chippewa Inlet Trail follows a creek simply known as the Inlet that flows into nearby Chippewa Lake. The trail is very flat and since it is only 4 miles long it does not take long to cover the entire route. The Inlet is in the middle of a wetlands nature preserve which makes the trail prone to flooding. So this may not be a trail to ride after several days of rain. You also may want to wear mosquito repellant.

The trail runs by and connects to Buckeye Woods Park as well. This is a recreational park that includes sports fields, picnic pavilions, playgrounds and a fishing pond. There are several small loops that you can ride in the park, but be aware of pedestrians as you ride in Buckeye Woods.

In addition, you can combine this trail with the nearby Chippewa Rail Trail, which starts just .8 miles east on Chippewa Road for an even longer ride.

This trail is a nature lovers delight and I would recommend riding it either in the early morning or late evening to maximize seeing what wild creatures may be paying a visit. This morning I saw a bald eagle sitting in a tree across Chippewa Road from the southern end of the trail.

North Olmsted Walking & Bike Trail

Appears to be Useful to the Locals

The North Olmsted Walking and Bike Trail runs roughly 2.5 miles along Interstate 480 from Great Northern Boulevard to Stearns Road. The trail is quite flat. It is surrounded by chain link fence on both sides for almost its entire length. The surface is asphalt which shows signs of significant root uplifting in several areas. One of the recurring complaints in the reviews for this trail is a lack of maintenance, particularly regarding weeds growing along the inside of the fencing. I will confirm that it is pretty overgrown in some places.

The trail provides walking and riding access for neighborhood residents to North Olmsted High School, an elementary school, and the district administration building as well as Great Northern Mall. This leads me to believe that perhaps the building of this trail was part of the deal to develop the land that became the mall. Definitely not a destination trail for people outside of the community, but probably useful to local residents.

Very smooth, goes thru farms, small towns and some factories. Going east to west subtle down hill so a bit slower on the way back. Saw some nice summer birds. The trail crosses a number of country roads where vehicles travel at speed so be aware.

Brecksville Reservation All Purpose Trail

Not a Trail for Those Expecting a Flat Rail Trail

There are actually two trails here, though, eventually they will probably fall under the name of Brecksville Reservation All Purpose Trail. First there is the Valley Parkway Connector Trail.

The Valley Parkway Connector Trail runs from the eastern edge of Mill Stream Run Reservation to the western edge of Brecksville Reservation. The Valley Parkway Connector Trail was the final and key link in connecting the Westside and Eastside Cleveland Metroparks. It truly connected the "Emerald Necklace" around Cleveland, OH and created about 70 miles of continuous off road trail (which includes approximately a 5 mile connection using the Towpath Trail in Cuyahoga Valley National Park.) This trail parallels the Ohio Turnpike for much of its route. You will pass under the turnpike and over Interstate 77 along the way. For a March Wednesday afternoon ride, the trail was not crowded, but it was moderately trafficked with cyclists and pedestrians. I can imagine that there will be a lot of people using this trail on the weekends particularly as the weather continues to warm up.

The other trail is the Brecksville All Purpose Trail. It is a beautiful tree shaded trail (or at least they will be once the leaves on the trees come out). Traveling east along either the Valley Parkway or Chippewa Creek Drive is easy as you descend into the depths of the Cuyahoga Valley. Heading west along either road presents some challenges with some steep climbs. Such climbs are not unusual in the Cleveland Metroparks but the two routes within the Brecksville Reservation may be among the longest and steepest on All Purpose Trails within the Cleveland Metropark Reservations.

Once you are in the valley if you head east on the trail along Chippewa Creek Drive you can connect to the Station Road Depot and Train Station for the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. The Cuyahoga River flows not 50 yards from the station and the tracks. Should you choose to cross the Station Road Bridge you can walk or cycle the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. On the Towpath you can travel north into downtown Cleveland or south to Akron and beyond. The Towpath Trail is part of the Ohio to Erie Trail cross-state route. Again, this is a popular destination and it attracts lots of visitors on the weekends. You might find fewer people on these trails late in the afternoon and evenings during the summer.

Cleveland Lakefront Bikeway

Misleading name

I think this should probably be renamed the “Cleveland LakeNear Bikeway”. We rode it from the northern end and it starts in a beautiful park with a marina and beach but quickly dead ends in a parking lot behind a highrise. We probably missed a sign but it’s pretty easy to find the continuation on a very busy section of Lakeshore Blvd that does have a marked bike lane but requires vigilant urban riding skills. After a couple miles it becomes much less trafficked going by beautiful homes and gardens. It then gets pretty ugly again for a few miles approaching downtown when you’re still on road sandwiched between noisy I-90, a mostly industrial area, and an airport.

We didn’t bother to continue past downtown because the ride was so disappointing.

The trail is well marked, relatively flat, and well paved but mostly on the road.

There are rare glimpses of the lake. If you’re looking for a family friendly ride this is definitely not for you.
