Clive Greenbelt Trail

One of the best urban trails I've ridden

May, 2017 by pedalfree

The Clive Greenbelt is an urban multi-use trail, so it's crowded. It's not built for speed so if you're training for a race, this is not the right resource for you. If, on the other hand, you just like to get out and explore and ride at a leisurely pace, this is hard to beat. The surface is reasonably smooth and in good shape. Signage is awesome. The first time I rode it I found it easy to get where I wanted to go. This is no small thing as there are many spurs off the trail into surrounding neighborhoods. Connectivity is very good. If you live here, you can use it to get to shops, schools, places of employment, restaurants, etc. The woods are thick along most of the trail and you follow a creek so even though you're crossing the heart of a metro area it still has somewhat of a wilderness feel to it. You'll likely encounter a lot of traffic including families with kids and dogs, walkers, other bikers and people who just want to enjoy nature. It's a great community resource and everything an urban trail should be.

Iowa Riverfront Trail

River ride

May, 2017 by sschwinn

I rode this trail using the Heartland B Cycle system (Omaha and Council Bluffs; there is a station right on the trail where it intersects the John Kerry Pedestrian Bridge).

The surface was in decent condition except for a detour at Harrahs casino. Limited Omaha and Missouri River views.

The Western Trails Interpretive Center at the southern end is worth a stop.

The John Kerry Pedestrian Bridge is great.

Waterloo/CF Trails

April, 2017 by dbhogan1

You won't meet your Waterloo here! Rather you will have the time of your life. As a Blackhawk County expatriate, I have ridden trails across dozens of states, and these trails rank among the best. Also They are a tribute which resonates with Waterloo Parks legend---- former parks director Leonard Katoski. They intersperse throughout his visionary Greenbelt which divides Waterloo Cedar Falls.
Again, all Blackhawk County trails leading any direction will result in biking bliss

High Trestle Trail

Awesome

April, 2017 by pedalfree

I've been across some pretty spectacular bicycle bridges such as the Bob Kerrey Bridge over the Missouri between Omaha and Council Bluffs, the Big 4 Bridge in Louisville and the Purple People Bridge in Cincinnati but Iowa's High Trestle is hands down the best. The bridge is the centerpiece of a beautiful paved, flat and fast trail. If you can, go at sundown and see the blue lights come on. It's so special that my wife and I are planning to move here so that we can ride it every day.

Soft surface

February, 2017 by toaster.42

I am a regular bike rider and usually ride for at least 30 miles round trip on any given day, but after 15 miles round trip on this Trail I was ready to call it a day. Trail is too soft even for mountain bikes as I was sinking into dirt. I would suggest to walk only on this trail.

Riverfront Trail (IA)

River front Trail & mississippi trail

February, 2017 by twotrikes

Ride the Iowa trail to Lindsey Park in Davenport, and take water taxi to Illinois. There ride the Mississippi trail west to Sunset park or east to Savanna Illinois, about 70 miles. There are 3 campgrounds on the Illinois side.
The water taxi is seasonal and daily pass ($) available.
An alternate crossing is the bridge at the Rock Island Arsenal. (HELMETS ARE REQUIRED at Arsenal)
ENJOY !

Grant Wood Trail (Linn County Segment)

Rustic, quiet, partially abandoned, still enjoyable !

January, 2017 by sneaky pete

You may not want to try this on a narrow-tired road bike, the surface is largely either turf, sand, or rocky turf :)

The Westernmost segment is about 3.2 miles long, somewhere in the middle there is maybe 50-75 yards of boggy (wet) grass from a spring, your tires may cut in a little.

It's about .7 miles of surface roads to the Center segment, which is about 2.3 miles long.

The Easternmost segment appears to have been abandoned. The TrailLink map shows the West end of this segment beginning at Alderman Rd, but, I don't think that the trail is accessible there unless you ride a fat bike and enjoy serious boon-docking. There -is- access to the Easternmost segment at Linn Grove Rd, (about 3.3 miles of Gravel roads from the East end of the Center segment), but, it's only passable going East, and then only for about .25 miles of nearly knee-high grass, until it dead-ends into a fence.
