We rode from Warren trailhead on the Southern end to North Bloomfield and back (about 28 miles round trip). It’s kind of a boring trail, mostly woods on each side with not many views. There are HORRENDOUS bumps on a stretch just north of Rt. 88. 17 huge “speed bumps” in a half mile stretch that are marked with red and yellow paint. Needs fixed badly. We will most likely not ride this section of the trail again. Will attempt the northern end from Orwell to see if it’s any better.
Did 16 from Oakdale to Burgettstown. Ate at Paradise on the Trail. Allegheny County had black topped a bunch, which is great. Fantastic trail!!
We parked at Colliers Station and traveled a few miles down to Weirton. Weirton is the low elevation on the trail. We biked to the Pennsylvania/West Virginia state line. There is a marker and picnic area. Continued uphill in PA and stopped in Burgettstown. The replica train station along the trail is a little restaurant with ice cream, cold drinks, sandwiches, etc. We biked up to Bulger PA which is the highest point on the trail. Trail is asphalt paved in very good condition. Most of the trail is not shaded and goes through open areas. There are occasional sections of the trail that are wooded and offer shade. Between Weirton and Bulger we passed a few well maintained parking lots. There are map signs at each trailhead. We plan on riding the rest of the trail another time.
Discovered this comfortable place with great accommodations for two bike travelers. They offer a pullout sofa if you do not wish to share a bed. Indoor bike storage with a comfy bed and a hot shower! Distillery right next-door and two restaurants to fuel up in the morning to get back on the trail. Close to the panhandle of West Virginia. Their name is Harmony Trail Haven on Airbnb.
Comfortable accommodations in Burgettstown for bike travelers with indoor secure bike storage. Suitable for two. A comfy bed with hot showers they have a pullout sofa if travelers do not wish to share a bed. A very quaint distillery next-door for an evening nightcap, two breakfast spots within 50 yards of the front door. Their name is Harmony Trail Haven. They have five star reviews on Airbnb.
I biked this trail with a friend of mine who volunteered to clean out Lochs 7 and 8. This native Ohioan, who hails from Minerva, led my brother and I on a 36-mile round trip tour of this trail from Navarre, Ohio to the Dover Dam and back. The trail we traversed was mostly crushed stone or dirt, but it was exciting to witness firsthand the beautiful lochs revealed from our friend's tireless dedication. We would occasionally dodge a tree root or pothole on the trail along the canal, but it was doable. Not only did we pass over a bridge or under a tunnel, but we stopped for lunch as the most successful communal settlement in the United States!
The GAP trail was amazing. The nicely maintained 150 mile trail along the Pennsylvania mountains and rivers and then the descend into the Cumberland Valley was the best! We took it easy planning to only ride around 30 miles a day staying in Airbnb’s along the way. We rode it in 5 days and spend an extra day in Cumberland and did a 15 mile out and back along the C&O. We rented bikes ahead of time with the Golden triangle in Pittsburgh. they fitted the bikes out for us and provided a shuttle ride back to Pittsburgh for the bikes and us. We are looking forward to doing more trails in this area.
Trail is 21 miles in length and crushed limestone. Biked on a section of it, Spring 2026. The section I was on mostly through Farmlands. Parked at Bonniebrook. Saw the new painted mural at Marwood Road trailhead and parking.
Bike touring across tha US and I’m currently set in my hammock about 10 mils outside of frostbite head West! Gotta say that MD & PA has out done themselves on tha GAP! Wish other places “you kno who you are WV, yea you! Anyway, I love its backcountry vibe and tha fact that it’s well maintained! Hope tha rail to trail route gets done sooner rather than later and is maintained this well instead of corrupt politicians pocketing tha money! You kno who you are, you! Anyway, to tha hiker and biker trash out there, one love!
Highly recommend this beautiful and well kept trail. Beautiful to ride along the trees and over the 2 epic ohiopyle bridges.
