Holland Metro Trails

Mixed Reviews

September, 2018 by kwalker64

I've lived in Holland for over 30 years (just joined RTC today), and I can tell you that the Holland trail system is NOT all it's cracked up to be. It is a multi-use pathway, not a rail-trail, and has many driveways, road crossings, and other places to pay very close attention to. Lots (LOTS) of walkers, joggers, baby strollers, and similar obstacles abound. While some of it is scenic and enjoyable, much of it is just through town, etc. and nothing special as far as sights to see in most spots. If you're planning a trip to the area just for this, I'd suggest a different idea - go further east and hit Fred Meijer or White Pine, etc. The roads in Ottawa and Allegan counties are fine to ride on in most spots if you don't want to use the trail system.

Wadhams to Avoca Trail

Nice mix of sun and shade, good bathroom access, mostly flat

September, 2018 by kmatt42

The famous bridge is worth the ride, it is closer to the Avoca end.
Would make the ride again.

Saginaw Valley Rail Trail

flat and shady, perfect ride

September, 2018 by kmatt42

Lots of benches and spots to stop and relax.
The trail is very good shape, new coating of asphalt on most of it.
St Charles is charming with any needed food/supplies available.
Go Ride, enjoy!

Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail

Great Southern Route

September, 2018 by catalina30

Have ridden the Northern route of the Heritage Trail to The Homestead and north. Today we parked in the tennis complex in Glen Arbor and rode to Glen Haven and the Dune Climb. The trail is paved with a 5% grade of gently rolling hills but goes up to a 12% grade at the Dune Climb(not for the faint hearted). This is a beautiful trail that completely surprised us. We did discover you have to ride the road in Glen Arbor. There are nice restrooms and places to picnic in Glen Arbor and Glen Haven. Will definitely ride this trail again.

Western Gateway Trail

Perfect Surface

September, 2018 by estimatehub

Bar none, this is the best trail surface in the USA. Not a crack or bump in it and the bridges are concrete decked with perfect approaches. They've outdone themselves with this one. Bring on the bikes, skate boards and roller blades, you won't be disappointed.

Southern Links Trailway

Outstanding Trail!

September, 2018 by jagrochester_tl

Decided to post this review because there are no recent ones. This is an amazing trail! We rode it today, from Columbiaville to Millington, had lunch at the Millington Inn (great breakfasts and burgers), and rode back to Columbiaville, 20 miles. True to the description, it had gentle slope increases to Otter Lake, and then down again, with some leveling off. Lots of sun and tons of shade; we never got hot. All asphalt, in great shape! Wildlife included chipmunks, squirrels, and a woodchuck! Such a gem! It will be a gorgeous ride in the fall when the colors change. Highly recommend!!!!

Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park

whitepine comstock to Rockford

September, 2018 by cjbusscher

Parked behind the Wendy’s just past fifth third ball park, rode to downtown Rockford! Gradual uphill most of the way, so it was hard on this very humid day!! Little town of Rockford is nice and lots of little shops and places to eat. The dam and the rogue river are right on the trail. We had a round trip of 17 miles, next time we will start in Rockford and go to cedar springs

Saginaw Valley Rail Trail

update 2018

August, 2018 by glenn luther

I was looking for a trail with smooth pavement and shade. This looked like what I wanted, I was a little concerned as the last review was 2 years old. I was very pleased as the pavement is still in great shape. It looks like it is well cared for in all maintenance aspects.

Fred Meijer Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee Trail

Ovid to Saranac!

August, 2018 by chipper53

I was ready to abandon gravel-surfaced trails after riding from Ovid through St. Johns to Fowler. In this section it is all farmland (although picturesque farmhouses and fields), very little tree canopy, the surface is sometimes rough, you rarely see another rider, and you can hear M21 the whole way.

And THEN I discovered what happens once you hit Pewamo and west to Saranac. The trail completely changes into wooded forest/wetland/river views, lots of bridges over rivers and streams, and even the gravel surface gets more uniform, perhaps because of higher traffic.

I WILL say that St. Johns, Fowler, and Pewamo, have newly-restored depots with beautiful facilities. Someone has spent a lot of money, and I couldn't help but think how much more they'd be used if these trails were paved. It would increase usage twenty fold. Even tiny Muir has a lovely park along the trail, as did Saranac and Ionia.

Huron Sunrise Trail

A gem, lightly used trails and remote beaches: romantic ride!

Falling Waters Trail

A good out and back trail

Good condition for cycling and flat. The lakes make for a scenic ride and you can increase the distance easily with a few detours.

Lansing River Trail

Needs resurfacing in many areas!

August, 2018 by karen.surdenik

Sad that I can’t give this a higher rating, as I use to run on it for many years. Now as a cyclist I see it from a different aspect and it it not a great biking trail . For being such an urban gem, parts of it are just horrible to ride. A shame that with this being the capital city and where many associations are located that there is so little improvement and expansion of this trail.
